This week, Tidbits has lots of information about the Irish, everything from St. Patrick to Notre Dame. Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day by learning some interesting facts about the Emerald Isle.

• Themanhasadaynamedafterhim,butwhoexactly was St. Patrick? Strangely enough, his name wasn’t Patrick, and he wasn’t born in Ireland, but rather in Scotland! Maewyn Succat was born in the late fourth century to a wealthy family, but at the age of 16, he was kidnapped from the family estate by a group of Irish raiders and sold into slavery. During his six years of captivity, he was a shepherd, and experienced a conversion to Christianity. According to folklore, a voice came to him urging him to escape, which he did, aboard a pirate ship. Yet the voice further counseled him to return to Ireland as a missionary to convert the Irish to Christianity.

•After15yearsofstudyforthepriesthood,duringwhich time Succat took on the name Patricius, he began his 29-year-long mission in Ireland. Ancient legend tells of Patrick standing on a hilltop holding up his wooden staff, banishing all the snakes from Ireland. Because there were no snakes in Ireland, it’s believed this was merely symbolic of Patrick driving out the evil and pagan philosophies.

SHORT STUFFThis week there’s no shortage of short things! Take a look at a number of items containing the word “short.” • Randy Newman’s 1977 Billboard top hit “Short

People” described his subject, “They got little baby legs that stand so low, you got to pick ‘em up just to say hello.” Who is classified as a short person? The term “short stature” refers to any person substantially under the average height for a person of the same age and gender. Pediatricians use a measurement called standard deviation that compares the height of different children. A child’s height must be more than two SD’s below average height in order to have short stature, and 95% percent of comparable children are taller.

• A short sale on the stock exchange means that the seller does not actually own the shares he/she is selling and has to borrow them before being able to deliver. When the share price falls, the short seller buys them and returns them to the lender, resulting in a gain on the deal.

• If someone calls you short, he/she might be referring to your height, but could be telling you that your demeanor is abrupt, discourteous, or unfriendly. A short presentation doesn’t always refer to its duration. It might mean it was succinct and concise.

• If you want to retain information in your short-term memory, it will be necessary for you to repeat it out loud or mentally rehash it from time to time. By doing so, the data re-enters the memory’s storage, enabling it to be preserved for a longer period.

Q: My 7-year-old Dachshund-mix licks at everything - her furniture, her bed, and she even licks leaves during walks. I believe poor Goldie was kept in a crate for many hours as a puppy. Do you have any insights on her behavior? - J.A.C., Orlando, FLA: Dr. Ilana Reisner, a veterinary behaviorist in Philadelphia, PA, explains that persistent licking can be coined a “displacement behavior,” sort of letting off steam, as an outlet for anxiety, much as nail biting can be for people. However, since your dog seems so intent, more might be going on.” One determination of seriousness is to assess if your dog can easily be distracted from licking and redircted to another behavior, such as coming when you call her. Lots of folks might jump to the idea that Goldie has a compulsive disorder, and certainly that possibility exists. However, Reisner says to first rule out a medical explanation (which most likely explains the licking), particularly a possible gastro-intestinal issue, or even chronic tonsillitis. Scoping with biopsies will rule out the stomach issue and visually looking at throat will rule out the other. Crazy as it sounds, a food allergy is also possible. Reisner suggests you keep a log to determine what Goldie licks and when to determine if there’s any pattern. This information might help a veterinarian. Meanwhile, you can do no harm to enhance your dog’s enrichment. Feed Goldie from various Kong or food dispensing toys. You might even stuff food inside toys and then hide them around the house, so she can sniff them out. Also, take Goldie for daily walks on-leash, not only for exercise but also to sniff what’s new in the ‘hood. A compulsive behavior is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that after everything else is ruled out, it is considered. If this ends up being the diagnosis, a psycho-pharmaceutical might help, as can a referral to a veterinary behaviorist.

The early Celts referred to the shamrock as the seamroy, and considered this three-leafed clover a sacred plant with mystical properties. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to first-century Irish pagans. During the 17thcentury when the English began seizing Irish land and prohibiting the use of their native language and Catholic religion, many Irish started wearing the shamrock as a symbol of pride in their heritage.
