Last month’s meeting featured Kirk Barrell, who updated us on
the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale play in southwestern Mississippi and
southeastern Louisiana. It was a very informative and well-attended
presentation – I think we had about 80 members and guests. In case
you missed the presentation (the weather was fairly nasty that day)
much of the information Mr. Barrell presented can be found at the
Tuscaloosa Trend blog (http://tuscaloosatrend.blogspot.com/) or his
company’s website (www.ameliaresources.com). Even if you attended
the meeting, there is a lot of good information at those sites and it
appears that they are both frequently updated. I’d like to thank Kirk for
the great presentation and Greg Zerrahn for arranging it.
The industry has certainly experienced a tremendous amount of
technological advances in my 30 year career. Not only have the
exploration tools advanced markedly – 3-D seismic, computer
workstations, data available on the internet, digital logs, etc. – but the
drilling technologies as well – PDC bits
(for engineers anyway), horizontal
drilling, large multi-stage frac’s, MWD,
LWD, etc. These tools allow us to explore
areas and reservoirs I never dreamed
about when I first entered the field. For
those of us who embrace these new
technologies, there are seemingly endless
There are

CONNECTEDAT EVERY TOUCH POINT
The IHS suite of geoscience software—which includes IHS Petra®, Kingdom®, LOGarc™ and GeoSyn™—is designed to seamlessly connect to the industry’s leading source of critical Oil & Gas information, eliminating the need to move data manually from source to source and project to project. With this powerful new combination, users can streamline data transfer, enhance database performance and simplify project sharing. The result? Work?ows that connect like never before.
Connected work?ows mean that IHS customers spend less time looking for data and more time looking for the next big opportunity. It’s just one of the many ways that IHS helps to advance the decisions that advance the Oil & Gas industry.

securing speakers who can update us on some of these newer
opportunities. Let him know it the next time you see him.
Remember, this month’s meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. on the

will present the geology, wine and cheese of Spain. Kevin has
graciously arranged this geology and wine presentation as he has done
several times in the recent past. Additional information is available in

Matthew Chumley is making
progress assembling a rock and

available to borrow for presentations
to local schools. If you have some
rock, mineral, or fossil samples that
you can bear to part with, the SGS
would love to add them to our kit.

Geology from LSU. He has been in
the oil business for over 35 years,
and president of Hill Geophysical
Consulting for more than 25 years.
Kevin’s hobby is studying geology around the globe. He
explores how the subsurface influences everyday life through
agricultural systems that produce food and wine.
He has shared the fruit of his research with the Shreveport
Geological Society in an annual dinner meeting for five years. The first
of these presentations was “How Geology Influences Burgundy
Wines.” Kevin has also presented talks on the geology and wine of

Abstract
“Geology, Wine and Cheese of Spain”
Kevin Hill, recently back from a two- week geological research
trip in Spain, and special guest Max McCalman will discuss the geology of Spain and how it translates into fantastic flavors unique to the Iberian Peninsula.
Spain's long and complex geology is exposed at the surface for some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The rocks form mountain ranges and valleys that create a wide variety of agricultural landscapes. While Spain has minimal oil and gas production, it has some of the richest mineral deposits in Europe. Spain's
location put it in the middle of the planet's early game of bumper continents, resulting in extremely complex tectonic features, making the Iberian Peninsula like four countries in one.
During this evening meeting, we will show pictures of the spectacular geology and cover the wine regions of Penedès, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Galicia, and Jerez. World-renowned author and cheese wiz Max McCalman will lead us on an expedition of how geology influences the wonderful queso of Spain.
Chef Eddie Mars of the Petroleum Club, working closely with Kevin and Mary Virginia Hill, has designed a tapa menu sure to tantalize your taste buds and complement the myriad Spanish wines and cheeses we will taste. The corona of the evening will be an array of Spanish desserts with the most regal of Sherries from Jerez.
