Richard Adams of Carr Resources was the speaker at the
March meeting and he presented a program titled “Regional
Depositional Systems of the Woodbine, Eagle Ford and Tuscaloosa of
the U. S. Gulf Coast”. Rich gave a great talk before an overflow
crowd. Brian Lock is scheduled to present the April program titled
“The Eagle Ford Shale: Outcrop Studies Related to the Oil and Gas
Potential of a Major Unconventional Reservoir” on April 17, 2012.

you have a good suggestion for a program next year (2012-13), email it
to me and I will forward it to next year’s Program Chairman.
Matthew Chumley is recreating a geological kit to be used by
members to make presentations to schools or groups. If you would like
to donate rock samples, minerals, fossils, etc. to the kit, please contact
Matthew ([email protected]). Cash donations to fund this
project will also be accepted.
Bill Meaney has scheduled a continuing education program for
May 7, 2012. Dr. John M. Holbrook from Texas Christian University
will present a one day program on “Fluvial Stratigraphy”. The
program will be held at the Petroleum Club on the 15th floor.
Attendance will be limited to the first 75 paid registrations. Get your
reservations in early if you plan to attend.

States and North America that are available to be presented to area

Brian E. Lock
Biography
Brian Lock was educated (Ph.D. 1969) at Cambridge
University. He spent nearly eight years as a lecturer/senior lecturer at
Rhodes University in South Africa, before joining the faculty of the
University of Louisiana (then the University of Southwestern
Louisiana) in 1977. He spent short intervals working in the petroleum
industry full time, first as part of a Cambridge University consulting
group evaluating surface geology of Svalbard for Norske Fina (1969),
then more recently with Geoconsultants International in New Orleans
(1985-86) and continues to serve as an industry consultant.
He is a past President of GCAGS and vice-president of
GCSSEPM as well as serving in other society capacities. His teaching
at UL concentrates on sedimentology and stratigraphy with emphasis
on applied aspects. He was honored by AAPG in 2006 as a Grover E.
Murray Memorial Distinguished Educator.

Abstract
“The Eagle Ford Shale: Outcrop Studies Related to the Oil and Gas Potential of a Major Unconventional Reservoir.”
Highway improvements along U.S. 90 in Val Verde County in
the late 1970s created deep road cuts exposing excellent sections
through the Eagle Ford Formation. The Transgressive Systems Tract,
which is the main reservoir unit in the subsurface, is well exposed and
fresh material from below the deep surface-related weathering is
available.
The talk will include an introduction to the analysis of resource
shale. Results of Rock Eval and TOC analyses, together with thin
section and SEM studies, reveal details of sedimentation and
subsequent diagenesis. At some point, the outcrops were buried
sufficiently for maturation to approach the oil window, and bitumen in
the rock indicates at least two phases of oil migration through the area.
Carbonate redistribution during diagenesis was a dominant
process, exaggerating initial variability attributed to parasequence
development. Volcanic ashes are common and are probably the
principal source of silica. Carbonate and silica content contribute to
brittleness and hence suitability for hydraulic fracturing of the
formation.
