Make May Purple for stroke

All over the UK, landmarks have lit up purple to celebrate Make May Purple. Actor Rudolph Walker was at the Coca-Cola London Eye on 1 May to see the iconic landmark light up in purple. Rudolph said: “When someone has a stroke, their life changes dramatically overnight. The condition can happen to

anyone at any time, and can leave people facing a lifetime of disability. But with the right support, and plenty of determination, stroke survivors can get back on the road to recovery. I’m a proud supporter of Make May Purple – if we all pledge our support, together we can conquer stroke.”

A new era for stroke

Thank you to every one of the 1,000 stroke survivors in England who filled in the Stroke Association's survey.

The results found that stroke survivors’ needs are not being met. A significant proportion of stroke survivors in England leave hospital without a care plan, and many are not contacted by a healthcare professional when they return home.

Stroke is the fourth biggest killer in the UK, and over half of stroke survivors have a disability and need help with daily living. We need the Government to hear what stroke survivors are telling us:

• The care stroke survivors get depends too much on where they live

• Many stroke survivors and carers are not getting enough support

• Lives are being put at risk because some areas are slow to start using new stroke treatments.

This May we are launching our call for a new stroke strategy. We're asking the Government to commit to addressing key issues. The strategy will:

• Make sure stroke survivors and carers get the support they need when they get home – no matter where they live

• Drive improvements in hospital care for stroke

• Increase the number of people who can administer treatments like thrombolysis and thrombectomy, so that the amount of disability caused by stroke is reduced.

Help us create a new era for stroke.

You can help us by signing our petition, which calls on the Government to commit to a new stroke strategy, to help ensure stroke survivors get the support they need.

The petition will be handed into Parliament later this year – your contact details will not be used by the Government or MPs.

A New Era for strokeWe’re calling on the Government to develop a new national stroke

strategy, for England, because too many people are still not getting the

appropriate care and support they need after a stroke. We know that: • The care stroke survivors receive varies depending on where they live

• Needless delays in hospital mean that stroke hits people harder

• Thousands of lives are needlessly put at risk each year due to the slow adoption of new

stroke treatments and technological advancesWe want a new national stroke strategy, which will • Ensure stroke survivors, and their carers, receive the support they need when they get

home - no matter where they live • Continue to drive improvements in hospital care • Increase the proportion of people that can access thrombolysis and drive the roll out of

new treatments such as – thrombectomy – which will save lives and reduce disability

We need your support; You can help us by adding your name to this petition calling on the

House of Commons to press the Government to write a new national stroke strategy

which will ensure stroke survivors get the support they need. This petition will be handed into Parliament later this year – your contact details will not be

used by the Government or MPsFrom time to time we would like to keep you updated about our work and fundraising

activities. If you would like the Stroke Association to keep in touch with you, please tick the

last column in the table on the next page. You can change or stop the way we contact you
