In de f iance of her V ic tor ian upbr inging, poet, c r i t ic , and mountaineer Anne Br igman (1869–1950) was mak ing nude
photographs of herse lf decades before f em in is t ar t became a genre. Though Br igman’s work w as promoted dur ing her
l i f et ime by A lf red St ieg l i tz , her c ontr ibut ions to the f ie ld of photography have been largely over looked. Now r ediscovered
by the Nevada Museum of Ar t , wh ich pr esents 250 of her works , B r igman here gets the recogn it ion she deserves for her
f igurat ive landscape photos . Taken in t he Sier ra Nevadas back at the t urn of the century , these images pre f igure la ter
work jux tapos ing the female body and the grea t ou tdoors by the l ikes of Ana Mend ieta and Judy Ch icago , examp les of
