The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA), the apex industry bodies for

the automotive and auto component industry, respectively, have announced that they have set up an Auto Data Exchange system called AutoDX, which is an electronic data interchange platform to seamlessly integrate OEMs and suppliers on a common data exchange standard. The AutoDX will help standardize transaction data definitions, automate data exchange amongst industry players, get rid of manual data entries and provide data interchange capability across the automotive industry to enable a streamlined supply chain.

In addition to the large number of vehicles on display at the show, the Auto Expo also had an Electric Mobility Pavilion, which was inaugurated by the minister of

heavy industries and public enterprises, Mr Praful Patel. The pavilion included cars like the Maruti Swift RE, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Tata Iris and Magic, TVS E-Scooter and E-3Ws, Hero Eco E-Scooter, Mahindra e2o and the Maxximo. The pavilion also displayed various concepts of hybrid automobiles, and held sessions educating visitors about the nuances of electric technology along with a practical experience of driving electric cars and two wheelers giving consumers a first-hand experience of the vehicles.

With over 1.38 lakh road deaths in India in 2012, the average rate of fatality in road accidents

is a high one out 3.5 incidents. This has sharply put into focus the safety of road users, especially those behind the wheel. On the landmark 12th Auto Expo, the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) decided that it was necessary to bring it to the forefront, thus creating the Safety Pavilion.

Inaugurating the pavilion at Pragati Maidan, Mr Harish Lakshman, President of ACMA said, “Currently most of the voluntary safety measures in India revolve around vehicle-theft rather than passenger safety. India today records the highest number of road accidents in the world. These alarming figures call for a serious need to bring a check on road casualties that can be avoided through collaborative initiatives of the Government, Industry and Public. The Safety Pavilion at the Auto Expo 2014, will display a host of products by manufacturers which are leaders in braking systems, lighting systems, electrical equipment, among others; is a step in this direction to educate the consumers on the advantages of deployment of safety devices and technologies.”

With India being one of the leading

producers of two-wheelers and passenger vehicles in the world; there is an urgent need to develop new devices and technologies to enhance safety of riders. Approximately 56% of fatalities are being accounted for by two-wheelers (26%), passenger cars (17%) and multi-utility vehicles (13%). Even developing countries like Argentina, Brazil, Columbia and Uruguay have legislations for deployment of safety

devices/technologies in vehicles.Expressing concern on the lack of

mandatory standards for safety critical items sold in the automotive aftermarket, Mr.Soumitra Bhattacharya, Chairman, Consumer Affairs Committee, ACMA, remarked, “While the Indian auto component industry today manufacturers products of internationally-accepted quality, mandatory standards are prescribed only for those consumed

by the vehicle industry (OEMs). Unfortunately parts sold in the aftermarket, including those that could impact human safety and health, do not have any mandatory standards. It is therefore no surprise that markets are flooded with cheaper, substandard and, at times, spurious parts that work as quick-fix alternatives for a consumer who prefers to spend minimal on maintenance, not fully understanding the serious risk that such items pose to human life or on the performance of the vehicle. A comprehensive road-map for the automotive industry, keeping in mind the passenger safety, is therefore the need of the hour.”

ACMA research also found rampant use of counterfeited parts results in a loss of Rs 33,000 crore, with the government losing out on taxes worth Rs 2,200 crore and staggering losses in terms of labour opportunities and fuel wastage. To counter it, ACMA has over the years used its ‘ASLI-NAQLI’ campaign to spread awareness on usage and benefits of genuine auto components. Road Shows for retailers and traders in city auto-repair markets, consumer awareness at mega events like Auto Expo, focused IPR awareness programs for enforcement agencies, program on packaging technologies to prevent duplications are integral to the campaign.

The Auto Expo is back, better and more relevant than ever

more show, more goThe Auto Expo needs little

introduction. Since its inception in 1986, it has been the best car and bike exhibit, showcasing

the best products from a wide range of manufacturers, Indian and international. That the Auto Expo is Asia’s largest motor show is no surprise, then.

In its early years, the Auto Expo was mainly a showcase of how the Indian automotive industry was incorporating new technologies available at the time and promoting research and development for adapting the same technology to Indian conditions.

It has grown significantly since then, playing host to a number of important ancillary and accessories suppliers, and a large number of manufacturers, some of which have even held global unveils. For instance, the 9th edition of the Auto Expo in 2008 saw the launch of Tata’s highly anticipated Nano hatchback, the most affordable car in the world. This has meant that audience levels have gone through the roof over the years, with crowds touching close to 1.2 lakh people on some days.

And all through, Pragati Maidan in New Delhi has always been host to the Auto Expo. That is, until this year. For the 2014 edition of the Auto Expo, Pragati Maidan will be used by smaller accessories and ancillary suppliers, while the motor show takes place at the India Expo Centre in Noida, which is a good 30-40 km away from Pragati Maidan. This means that for the first time in its history, the Auto Expo will take place in two different locations, thereby enabling better management of burgeoning crowds.

The India Expo Centre is equipped with up-to-date infrastructure, more parking space and a cleaner, newer environment. The public days are slated for February 7-11, with show timings from 1pm on weekdays and 10am onwards on weekends. Tickets for the show are available at www.bookmyshow.com, with prices ranging from Rs 200 for weekdays to Rs 300 on weekends. Those interested in being present on business days will have to pay Rs 500.

how it all beganThe Association of Indian Automobile

Manufacturers (SIAM), and the Auto Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) celebrated 25 years years of existence in 1985 and decided to organize in cooperation with the then Association of Indian Engineering (now CII), the auto Expo from 3rd to 12th January.

The first Auto Expo in 1986 was

a window on technology transfer since it showed how the Indian automotive industries were absorbing new technologies and promoting indigenous R&D for adaptin these technologies to the rugged Indian conditions. The 10 day show was a path breaking event with the then Prime Minister Mr Rajiv Gandhi visiting the show to encourage the industry.

Over the years, the Auto Expo has evolved into a focused and modern motor show. This platform is used for brand promotion and corporate image development by exhibitors. Over the years it has become an important venue for global launches by vehicle manufacturers. Auto Expo has always witnessed large footfalls of more than a million people visiting the show and has

emerged as not only one of the largest exhibitions anywhere in India both in terms of space occupied and crowd, but also one of the major motor shows of the world. The Auto Expo attracts presence of all the automobile majors besides participation from over 30 countries including China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom, USA and so on.

Maruti Suzuki unveiled the Ciaz and SX4 S-Cross concepts. The Ciaz is a strikingly good looking concept that will eventually become the new SX4 sedan. Even if the rear has clear BMW cues, we think it works, on the whole; how much of it makes it into production remains to be seen.

The S-Cross concept is also rather interesting - it transforms the SX4 into a funky crossover, with quite a lot of character and flair. We hope it makes production!

Maruti Suzuki also showed some other one-off custom cars, based largely on the Swift and Ritz platform. Pleasingly, it announced a renewed investment in crash testing and a new R&D centre on a 600-acre plot, with an investment of Rs 2000 crore

Renault's Duster facelift made its debut at the show, and features several updates to its exterior and interior. The Koleos and the Fluence, Renault's premium offerings in India, also received updates that freshen up the range. The Kwid concept, pictured above, is a buggy concept that features a turbocharged petrol engine, a dual-clutch gearbox and the possibility of incorporating an electric motor and battery pack
