A TRIBUTE TO LIFE MEMBERS OF THE WINTON SHOW

John & Elinor East

John

I probably only gave a little help prior to 1961 but I decided to drive 100km in to town for the 1961 A.G.M. to join the committee and get involved. The committee was restricted to 25 and there were 27 nominations. I was one of 2 who lost in the ballot. President Eddie Phillott came to me after the meeting and suggested I get involved and better luck next year. This I did and joined the committee in 1962. The 1960’s was a mixed up decade with one of our worst droughts in 1965 and the next few years were not very good either and interest started to decline. I mainly worked in the ring and the sheep section at that time. The 1970, 1971 and 1972 shows were cancelled and a special meeting was called in November 1972 to try and start again. I accepted nomination for a Vice President position and took on the job of Chief Wool Steward even though I had never worked in the section. Fortunately a couple of men who had, helped me out. It was during my term that I suggested we add a class to the schedule creating a District Class as I realised that our district wool was finding it hard to compete with other wool from the other Central West shows. I note that it is still part of the schedule. It was somewhere around this time that John O’Connell, Charlie Phillott and myself constructed the steel sheep yards. Unfortunately they are hardly used now but there was a lot of work involved in building them. I was elected President in 1976 to 1978 and continued to work in the wool section. The next project was assisting in the building of the shed to house the Ring Section materials, thus freeing up the main pavilion for the ladies. Before the shed was built all movable items were stored in the pavilion and had to be shifted out a week before the show and put back late at night after the show before we could approach the bar. I actually ran the bar a couple of times too but eventually due to disability problems had to ease off and gradually retire from it all and concentrate on enjoying them.

Elinor I actually joined the committee in 1972 but had helped in the pavilion for some time before that. Before the men built the shed it was impossible to prepare the pavilion for the show as all the stuff for the ring was stacked in there. There was a working bee on Sunday before the show to remove it all and put the cabinets etc in place and of course it had to be hosed out before that could be done. It was somewhere around 1976 that I took on the job of Chief Pavilion Steward which I held for a few years and was followed by the position of Trophy Steward. My job was to select trophies for all the sections. I always enjoyed exhibiting in the shows and taking an interest in all the other sections. I was nominated and accepted the President’s Position in 1982, 1983 and 1984. I was the first female President for the Society and was greatly supported by the Committee. In those days there were more helpers which took some of the load off the President and gave the President more time to enjoy meeting up with judges and visitors from other regions. John and I have both witnessed the vast improvements to the showgrounds since we first became involved. These improvements such as the Bar area and paving etc and the Ring and cattle facilities have greatly added to the running of the show. John vividly remembers working in the bar when the stubbies were kept in a trough full of ice in the middle of winter!!

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT In 2018 Winton Show celebrates its 64th year since establishment. Our show is one of 128 staged across Queensland annually. You can expect that the Showgrounds will be a hive of activity involving ring events, cultural, wool and bird pavilions, prime and led cattle sections, young judges competition, working dogs, novelty events, side show alley and an impressive lineup of professional entertainment. Saturday night there will be live music adjacent to the bar until late. A broad range of caterers will supply food throughout the event. In August 2017 at the Brisbane Exhibition, Claire Jackson, representing the Central & North West Sub Chamber to which the Winton Show belongs, won the Queensland Country Life Miss Showgirl Award. Claire’s achievement marked the first time in the history of the event that an entrant from our sub chamber had been crowned Miss Showgirl. Our committee congratulates her wholeheartedly and wishes her well as she experiences the opportunities that go with the role. Claire will open our Show on Saturday at 6pm. We look forward to hosting her in Winton. Our website www.wintonshow.com.au continues to offer information and advertising to our patrons, competitors and sponsors in an online medium. If you or your business would like to advertise with us please contact our Secretary at [email protected]. Many thanks to all of those who have contributed to deliver the Winton Show - every single ounce of support is genuinely appreciated. Please consider membership yourself, or for your family, for a cost effective way to enjoy the experience. We meet monthly at the Winton Bowl’s Club at 5.30pm. Feel free to come along and share your thoughts regarding the enhancement of our wonderful event. May we catch up at western Queensland’s favourite, the Winton Show!

GENERAL RULES (FOR CLASSES 129 - 130) 1. Competitors must supply a signed waiver to the Show Secretary before

competing. 2. All sections of the Outback Legends Challenge are open to all horses. 3. The Outback Legends Challenge will be judged over two separate sections. 4. The first section will be a cattle working pattern as per schedule. 5. The dry work and cattle work sections will be equally weighted, with 100 points being

awarded to each, making a maximum possible score of 200 points. 6. All competitors will be scored in both sections. Aggregate points will decide placing. 7. In the event of a tie for first place a cattle working section run off will be held. 8. During cattle work the Judge will carry a whip and competitors will ride to the whip. 9. In the event of a beast proving unmanageable, the Judge will have the option of

awarding the competitor one re-run. This decision will be strictly in the hands of the Judge, the competitors will endeavor to complete the course until they hear the cracking of the Judge's whip.

10. All reasonable efforts will be made by the Committee in the selection of suitable cattle for this event.

11. The Judge's decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into by the Committee. Score sheets will be available at the conclusion from the Committee.

Equipment: Horses must compete in a snaffle bit. No martingales or nosebands of any description to be worn. Competitors must wear appropriate stockman's attire. Conventional stock saddles must be used as horned saddles are not allowed. CATTLE WORK RULES Competitors will be allocated a number of cattle in the cut-out yard. After demonstrating the cutting out ability of their horse to the Judge, the competitor will call for the opening of the gate and attempt to drive their beast through the clover leaf pattern formed by the pegs in the arena. Upon entering the arena, the competitor is free to choose a right or left- hand course. One fresh beast will be put into the cut-out yard after each run.

2018 Winton Show Schedule V6 02.06.18 51

Maximum points allocated will be as follows: Yard word - 25 points, first peg - 25 points, second peg - 25 points and gate - 25 points. - Total 100 points. If a competitor should turn tail or be unable to leave the yard unassisted with their beast, then no points will be awarded for their yard work. Once in the arena competitors are encouraged to attempt encircling each peg and passing through the gate once only i.e. if the first peg is missed then competitors should proceed with an attempt at the second peg. Competitors will be scored for each peg and the gate even if they are missed. Once the beast and competitor are through the gate, the run will finish. However, if the gate is missed or split, then the competitor is required to attempt to complete the circle they started. Circles will be deemed complete when the beast crosses its own tracks. This event is designed to promote sound stockmanship. Competitors are encouraged to keep their cattle away from the fence as much as possible. Any deliberately cruel or negligent treatment of the cattle by competitors will be penalised. DRY WORK RULES Competitors will be judged on their ability to perform the pattern as written. Any deviation from the exact written pattern, whether initiated by the horse or rider, will be considered a lack of control and marked accordingly. Credit will be gained by those competitors who can show speed when required, relaxed slow gait when required, smoothness, finesse and absolute control, with the horse being willingly guided in a calm, confident manner, without anticipation or hesitation. Those horses that are ridden with contact will be judged the same as horses ridden with a loose rein, provided that the horse shows no resistance and continues to move forward willingly. Circles should be round, of the appropriate speed and size, should have a common centre point, with both right and left circles mirroring one another. Lead changes should be in the centre of the arena. Straight lines should be just that - no leaning left or right. When stopping, the horse should stay straight, use his back and stop willingly without any pulling or jarring on his front end. Spins should be smooth and rhythmic without roughness and hopping and the horse should demonstrate a willing and relaxed manner throughout. Horses should back up willingly in a straight line for at least 3 metres. N.B. The Winton P&A Show Society Inc. holds written confirmation from the Australian Campdraft Association Inc. that winning or placing in this event will not alter the ACA status of the horse.
