Bones Chapel - Évora

03

Lisbon - Évora

Traces of old times and civilizations have been left virtually untouched

in a city where people still walk small cobbled, medieval streets. Large

archways give way to picturesque squares where local artisan shops

are found next to contemporary high-street brands. Terraced cafés

invite you to relax while bars and restaurants offer a special

gastronomic voyage through this southern part of Portugal. Visit São

Francisco Church built in the Gothic style with Manueline influences

and housing the Capela dos Ossos (Bone´s Chapel) where all bones

from monastic cemeteries are stored. Return to Praça do Giraldo and

cross towards Rua de Serpa Pinto. Visit the Convento de Santa Clara

church with its gold carvings, blue tiles, beautiful murals and an

elegant belfry. Further north is the Convento do Calvário, its church

and 16th century cloister are worth a visit. Continue now to pay a visit

to the Cathedral a severe and fortress like structure in early Gothic

style and the Évora museum next door. One of the city’s most famous

monuments is the Roman Temple with its still standing 14 columns

originally built in the 1st Century A.D. as a place of worship to

Emperor Augustus. End the tour by visiting the church of Convento

dos Lóios, which was built between 1485 and 1491 with parts of the

former convent now converted into a Pousada, which beautiful cloister

now serves as a charming garden with the restaurant located in the

galleries. Have light refreshments before returning to Lisbon.
