Short Breaks Update for Families with Disabled Children and Young People

“I wanted to write to you to let you know that from 1

st November 2019, I will be reducing my working

days from full-time to 2 days a week.

I have worked in the Disabled Children Team since March 2009 firstly as Aiming High Short Breaks Project Manager and then Disability Services Development Manager when the government’s Aiming High Programme ceased. I have thoroughly enjoyed my role in that time and

am honoured to have been involved in the development and growth of Short Break activities and Services for disabled children, young people and their families in Oxfordshire.

I am thrilled to be continuing in my role to concentrate on strategic work and supporting Danny Hearn (Disability Services Development Officer) and Pauline MacKinnon (Disability Information Officer) to continue to do the wonderful jobs they both do to make the Short Break activities and services the success they are. I will also continue to work closely with the Oxfordshire County Council Joint Commissioning Team to maintain the quality of our Commissioned Short Break Services.

I will still be here but probably not as available as I have been. I am sure Danny and Pauline will be able to provide you with excellent support in my place. If you need help with finding activities and services please contact Pauline on [email protected] or telephone 07554 330244. If you have other questions for the Short Break Team please contact Danny on [email protected] or telephone 01865 323780 and I am sure he will be able to help you or direct you to the appropriate person, team or organisation.”

Best regards,

Kay

Now in its second year, I N K Oxford (https://www.inkoxford.com/) is empowering young people with disabilities to develop their artistic abilities. Disabled young people & facilitators participate in a bespoke programme that teaches the fundamentals of art and design as well as employability skills.

In addition to the workshops, a designer is turning the artwork from our artists into saleable merchandise. Designs from I N K Artists have been made into tote bags, wrapping paper, greetings cards & notebooks...more ideas are in motion! I N K participants also have the opportunity to become involved in the marketing and selling of their work at markets, in shops and online.

Oxfordshire is being re-inspected by Ofsted in September. We are keen to meet with parents in Oxfordshire to understand more about your experiences of local schools; Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs); CAMHS; diagnosis process; support and anything else that concerns you. We would like to know what is working well and what isn’t working well.

Please come along and have a cup of tea and some cake with us. Everyone is welcome. If you are unable to attend but would still like to pass on feedback, please email [email protected]. Please also email us to confirm your attendance. We look forward to meeting you.

Open Wide!

Your views are needed about accessing dental care for your disabled

children and young people.

We know that going to the dentist can be very stressful for disabled children (and adults

too!). Can you tell us about your experiences so we share them with the government? A

parliamentary committee are looking at how NHS dentists might be improved for disabled

children.

This short survey will only take 5 minutes & it will help shape the future of NHS dental care.

**Deadline is Monday 9 September 2019. **

Fledglings is an online shop with products designed for

children with additional needs including clothes, toys &

sensory products.

They have dental products including Dr Barman's Superbrush's angled head which allows the

sides and tops of teeth to be brushed at the same time and means fewer brushes are

needed to clean your child's teeth effectively. Oral health and chewing products; adaptive

cutlery, crockery and cups for children and adults are also available.

Please go to the website to find out more - https://fledglings.org.uk/

Short Breaks Update for Families with Disabled Children and Young People

The Stay Calm Project* is looking for parents to participate in their study to develop a new questionnaire. They are specifically looking for parents/caregivers of children and young people between the age of 6 and 25 years old, who have emotional outbursts at least once a month. (Emotional outbursts are also known as 'temper outbursts', 'meltdowns', 'tantrums' etc.). Emotional outbursts can be a particularly significant problem for individuals with neurodevelop-mental disorders and/or learning disability. Currently, researchers conduct interviews with parents/caregivers to gather information about the characteristics of emotional outbursts, which may be important in finding out the underlying problems that lead to emotional outbursts. However, interviews can be ineffective or inefficient, as they are time-consuming for both researchers and participants. This project aims to gather a large number of responses to ensure that the questionnaire is designed correctly and is accurately measuring emotional outburst characteristics. To do this they are looking for parents/caregivers to complete an anonymous online questionnaire or by post. It is anticipated that the questionnaire will take no more than 1 hour to complete (most likely around 30 mins). This newly developed questionnaire will be a valuable tool for researchers and clinicians in future. It will allow important information to be obtained quickly, which will contribute to our understanding of the cognitive and emotional underpinnings of emotional outbursts and be particularly useful when developing new treatment strategies.

If you would like to participate, please use this link - Stay Calm Project to access the question-

naire online. Please use a Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox internet browser.

If you have any questions or would like a paper copy of the questionnaire, please contact:-

Justin Chung on 0121 414 7221 or at [email protected] or Kate Woodcock on 0121 414

6036 or at [email protected]

* The Stay Calm Project is being led by Justin Chung, under the supervision of Dr Kate Woodcock, Centre for Applied Psychology, University of Birmingham, with ethical approval from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Ethical Review Committee at the University of Birmingham.

Short Breaks Update for Families with Disabled Children and Young People

You may remember hearing about this venture several months ago but we have exciting news as the Wallingford Accessible Boat Club (WABC) have now formally commissioned the building of its purpose built Wheelyboat and placed an order with the supplier! This strategic step forward follows 2.5 years of hard work by a small handful of river-loving volunteers who have doggedly followed their vision to enable disabled people to get out and

about on the river just as able-bodied folk can do. Two Trustees recently travelled to Peterborough to help detail the Wallingford Wheelyboat, planned for delivery in September. This specialist boat should begin wheelchair accessible services & host its official launch in Spring 2020 so its build and fit-out is exciting news and will enable wheelchair users to simply roll-on and off the flat-bottomed boat with easy access for ambulant folk. After a few years fundraising, Trustees thought the Window on Wallingford would like to be the first to support Wheels on Water one 'WoW-one' (a name chosen in case we get more boats in future!)

Trustees were very impressed by the knowledge & experience of Jim Coulam & Andy Beardsley who have designed and built the boat. Deborah said “We can see what a great advantage this community facility will offer disabled people. Enabling people to relax and enjoy the pleasure of our beautiful river. We look forward to its delivery and launch”.

Oxfordshire SEND Families Together is a new group Facebook page that we’ve

just set up. There are several national groups but nothing specific to Oxford-

shire families so we wanted to bring something more “local” to our county fam-

ilies and professionals. This group page is designed to be an information shar-

ing group for families who have children/young people with impairments living

in Oxfordshire and for professionals working with them. Please do send me or

share on the page any events or activities that you hear about as we would love

for others to also hear about them.

This will be a “closed group” on Facebook and to join, please go to Facebook

and either search for “Oxfordshire SEND Families Together” or click on this link

to go to the page direct - Facebook - Oxon SEND Families Together. We do have

some group rules on our page which we would ask everyone to adhere to when

using the group.

Short Breaks Update for Families with Disabled Children and Young People

Currently, at My Life My Choice, we are working on a campaign to encourage organisations that work with people with learning disabilities to employ people with learning disabilities.

We know that jobs are really important for helping people to live independent and fulfilling lives. We also know that 65% of people with learning disabilities want a paid job but only 6% have one. This is not good enough! Wages are important to leading independent lives and people in work tend to have better social lives, emotional well-being and mental health.

We want to change this so have created a campaign asking organisations that work with people with learning disabilities to lead the way in employing them. If you’d like to sign up, please do so here:-

https://www.mylifemychoice.org.uk/pages/26-campaigns

“If you’re running a company in the UK today and not employing people with learning disabilities and autism, get your act togeth-er. You’re missing out on employing people who are hard workers and great colleagues; employees who will make a positive differ-ence to your company.” Steve Scown, Dimensions CEO

Please note - this campaign is aimed at organisations which support or work with peo-ple with learning disabilities. My Life My Choice are keen for the learning disability sec-tor to “practice what it preaches” by employing people with learning disabilities. Any-one can sign up but please encourage any employers working in the disability sector that you know of to sign up!

Autism Awareness Training

Autism Live Training has recently taken over Autism Oxford's Training and Seminars. They

have 4 different training session dates with subject choices suitable for professionals, family

members or carers. Click on the links below to find out more.

Richard Maguire, formerly Senior Trainer and Consultant at Autism Oxford, has designed these

half day training sessions in order to share his professional insight on how to effectively work

with autistic individuals. If you want more understanding of how autism affects those you are

working with, and how to better support them, there is a training session for you. These op-

portunities are also ideal for family members or carers to better perceive the reality of how

their autistic child, young person or adult might be feeling, reasons for their behaviour and

how best to communicate with them.

Attendees will have the rare and invaluable opportunity to ask questions of a seasoned autism

professional who is himself autistic, having an instinctive understanding of autistic people and

why they might do the things they do. Better understanding, linked to insightful adjustments

to working practices can deliver improved and longer lasting outcomes.
