This Botanical Garden and Rescue Center’s main objective is to protect and rehabilitate displaced wildlife of Costa Rica’s Caribbean region, providing a safe haven to animals that need refuge because of habitat loss, accidents and victims of pet trade or hunting. Many of these animals can be nursed back to a healthy condition, and released once again into their natural habitat, however, for those others that have to stay within the center for additional care, the Center provides a habitat as close as their natural habitat to promote their wellbeing. The center hosts species like sloths, iguanas, monkeys and deer.

In a property that covers approximately 10 acres you can also find a wide variety of plant groups like palms, heliconias, bromeliads, calatheas and aroids, among others, many of them being indigenous to the Talamanca region. Different spices available within the botanical garden are vanilla, black pepper and cinnamon and tropical fruit trees that produce papaya, banana, cocoa and pineapple grow within this land.

Also you can find the amazing “miracle fruit”…your challenge to find out why it is called miraculous!

This Poás Volcano National Park is one of the most popular and attractive excursions that take place in the northern Central Valley. The road to Poás offers amazing landscapes of deep shades of green, coffee plantations punctuated by flowers, sugar cane and strawberry fields. Sitting at 8,500 feet above sea level, the volcano is one of the few active craters in the Americas. Famous for its geyser-like eruptions of gas and ash, the main crater has a gigantic pit of 1.5 km in diameter and 300 meters deep, making it one of the largest in the world. The crater is usually active with smoke discharges. At the bottom of the crater there is a hot, circular lagoon that measures 350 meters in diameter and water temperature ranges between 40 ºC and 70 ºC.

There is also a visitor’s center, where you can enjoy exhibits on the history and other aspects of this still-active volcano. After the visit to the volcano, a traditional lunch will be served at a local charming restaurant. Before returning to your ship, you will stop at Sarchí, which for over a century has been the center of production of the hand-painted oxcart. It was here in Sarchí where more than a century ago, primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate, colorful designs. The Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory is the country’s only oxcart factory whose machines are powered by a water wheel. The idea for this unique factory began with Eloy Alfaro, known fondly as ‘Lolo’, who began creating oxcarts in 1923; which at that time were the only means of transporting the precious coffee to the port for exportation. He later expanded this workshop to include the production of furniture and handcrafts. In July of 2006 the World’s Largest Oxcart was built in Eloy Alfaro’s workshop. It is 42 feet long, 12 feet high and weights more than 1.5 tons. The oxcart is now on display in Sarchi’s central park, for a memorable picture.

Enjoy watching artisans at work, while you enjoy delicious tropical fruits or a cup of fresh brewed coffee.

Note: Due to the high altitude the volcano, this excursion is not recommended for guests with heart conditions.

Located in the west part of the Central Valley, the scenic town of Sarchí is considered the home of Costa Rica’s best craftsmanship. It was here that, more than a century ago, primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate and colorful designs. There was spirited but good-nature competition among families to see who could create the most spectacular designs.

During your journey, you will visit The Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory, the country’s only oxcart factory whose machines are powered by a water wheel. The idea for this unique factory began with Eloy Alfaro, known fondly as ‘Lolo’, who began creating oxcarts in 1923; which were at that time, the only means of transporting the precious coffee to the port for exportation.

The sturdy vehicles, hauled by teams of oxen soon became the primary means of transportation throughout the nation, bumping over rough roads and trails to carry elegantly dressed young ladies to festivals and dances in nearby villages.

Once the oxcarts are constructed, the wheels and axles are created using the “hoop tire” method, a process developed in the early 19th Century in which the iron wheel fittings are shrunk to produce an extremely tight fit that binds the various wheel parts and axle together. The carts are then painted in the traditional designs and bright colors which have made of Sarchí the birthplace of Costa Rica’s artisans.

Eloy Alfaro later expanded his workshop to include the production of furniture and handcrafts. Today, the hand-painted Costa Rican oxcart art has evolved into a brilliantly executed form of native artistic expression. Visitors can find an immense variety of local wood products, ranging from elaborated hand-made furniture to inlaid boxes, trays and rare hardwood statuary.

In this unique Oxcart Factory you will be able to see artisans painting a variety of woodcrafts. Leather goods and souvenirs of all kinds and for all tastes are available for purchase. During this excursion you will have the opportunity to stop at Sarchi’s main square or take a picture of the largest oxcart ever built.

At a short distance from Sarchí, you will arrive to the little town of Grecia; famous for the historical Lady of Mercy metallic church. A brief stop will be made to take a memorable picture.

The Macaw Sanctuary at El Manantial is a Costa Rican wildlife conservation charity working to save and protect endangered species from extinction. Headquartered in Aranjuez de Puntarenas, El Manantial works with some of the most endangered native birds of Costa Rica, focusing on the rarest species and the most fragile habitats.

The main focus of the project is the Scarlet Macaw (Ara Macao) and the Great Green Macaw (Ara Ambigua), who once flew freely in many areas of Costa Rica. In 1994, individuals concerned with the status of these endangered species decided to create a project for their conservation; with the sole purpose of the project being the reintroducing of Macaws back into the wild, striving to increase their population numbers.

As a result of practices such as the destruction of habitat, logging of the Almendro de Montaña trees and the poaching of macaw chicks for sale in the pet trade, the specie’s population has become severely reduced. Both species are listed as endangered in Costa Rica. The Sanctuary now operates under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment Energy and Telecommunication (MINAET) and in accordance with the wildlife conservation laws of Costa Rica.

At the Sanctuary, Great Green macaws and Scarlet macaws are not bred for the pet trade. They are strictly bred in order to release their young in to the wild to be set free forever. On the project the birds fly unrestricted, enjoying the trees and the fruits they can find around this habitat and eating clay on the ground. Aranjuez is an important Village for the liberation program; the people of this town are in charge of caring for and watching over the wild macaws.

Carara National Park, Pura Vida Gardens& Crocodile Observation

Sustainability is a concept originated in the ecological sciences and it was then defined as the ability of an ecosystem, community of beings, or a population of a single species to endure over prolonged periods of time. The concept was taken and then applied to economics, both on the macro and micro levels, to transform into sustainable economics, a concept that accepts the reality that economic human activities have an impact on the environment and the socioeconomic structure of the human context, and accepts the interrelations between those three elements. From here many concepts have emerged, the triple bottom line, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable development to name a few, all share this fundamental recognition that for society, economics and nature to thrive there must be a balanced effort from individuals, public sector and the private sector to maintain these three pillars over prolonged periods of time.

Although there isn’t a universally accepted definition of what exactly sustainability is, we follow the definition of the UN Brundtland Commission of 1987 which says: “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”Our Mission statement, as well as the vision we have for our future and our shared Corporate Values revolve around the following concept or sustainability policy:

“The Accent on Service placed by every individual in favor of our clients allows us to provide excellent services in a sustainable way. We work continuously towards improving customer satisfaction, preventing contamination and executing social responsibility projects where we operate, thus achieving our company's success”

Swiss Travel has taken on the challenge of becoming a world-class organization. This requires each of our departments and services to further enrich our competitiveness, to become more productive and to increase quality levels, while raising environmental awareness, with the purpose of achieving a position of leadership among tour operators worldwide. Swiss Travel has decided to conduct its business in a sustainable way. In 2013, we were re-certified by the ICT with 4 leaves of the CST, and it’s onwards and upwards from there!

Touristic Sustainability is an integral concept. Managing a Sustainable operation not only means being respectful with the natural resources of our country, it also means supporting our local communities and cultures and empowering and providing substantial support to the socio-economic development of our beloved Costa Rica.

Only by achieving and maintaining balance between those three areas, can we ensure that our activities will be able to grow and subsist in the long term. Hence, for our projects and actions to be sustainable, they must comply with the following conditions, in order to generate a positive outcome within each of the pillars of Sustainability:

• Natural Environment: The activity must minimize and/or offset all negative effects it may produce; ideally, it must develop in total harmony with nature and help nurture it.• Socio-cultural Environment: The activity shall not cause damage to the social and cultural structures of the area in which it is performed. On the contrary, it should help them evolve and improve always remaining true to their original form and best character.• Socio-economic Environment: The activity must benefit all parties involved in its development; this includes business-owners, employees, and the populations of every area where it unfolds.

Projects: Swiss Travel and Sustainability third party recognition

It is easy to say you are ecofriendly, but it is much harder to prove it. That’s the importance of third party recognition. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)has acknowledged the verification mechanism used by Rainforest Alliance, Swiss Travel is not only Rainforest Alliance verified, it is a TOPS (Tour operators promoting Sustainability) member in Costa Rica, which means we actively take part in promoting sustainability projects hand to hand with Rainforest Alliance and our verification standard was above 70% satisfactory. Also Swiss Travel has been awarded 2 certifications of Sustainable Tourism granted by the Costa Rican Board of Tourism (ICT) known as the CST, which is also recognized by the GTSC.

The CST / Rainforest Alliance verified– Benefits that are passed on to our customers

The CST, like the Rainforest Alliance verified, is a seal of guarantee; it differentiates us from companies that might misleadingly operate under "eco-friendly" or "sustainable" labels, known in the industry as “green-washers”. These seals provide trustworthy, third party issued information to provide a guide about which companies truly offer a sustainable product and which ones do not. This validates and reinforces our Country's image as an authentic, natural land, considerably increasing Costa Rica's competitiveness as the destination of choice for tourists who want to be in touch with the great wonders of Mother Nature.

The CST is worth further explanation since is a local seal that may not be known or understood by our clients. The CST is the only certification of its kind that is free, government run and recognized by the GSTC. It takes into account the three pillars of sustainability and adds a fourth, the client. The CST then has 4 pillars (Environment, Economic, Social and Customer) because it emphasizes the industry’s unique opportunity to educate travelers about sustainability. The CST will grade from 1 through 5 (best, maximum) each of these pillars separately in the form of leaves (5 leaves being the best possible result) with a very rigorous questionnaire and inspection. The company’s overall score is given not by the average of the four pillars, but by the minimum score attained, that’s what makes it interesting and very rigorous. Our company is 4 leaves in the CST, which means that our minimum score in any pillar is above 80% satisfactory.

This is important because it reinforces the concept that efforts should be balanced across the pillars. For example, if the CST made an average of the four pillars companies could hide their weak points with their strong points (for example by obtaining a 1 in environment and a 5 in the following three pillars, the overall score would be a 4 leaves company average, instead of a 1 leaf company under the current system). We are working hard to attain the coveted 5 leaves in order to become not only the country’s oldest, biggest most respected and trustworthy DMC, but also the most sustainable one.

What is sustainability?
