Unless you lived through the Great Depression, our nation is currently in the throes of the most challenging economic times any of us have ever faced.

Yet so much of the talk in the media these days about ways we can “economize” seems to be too little, too late, and they miss a much more important issue all together. We shouldn’t be asking ourselves “How can we afford it?” Instead, we should be asking ourselves, “Do we really need it?” And if we don’t buy it, “How will our lives be affected, for better or worse?”

For most people, it’s all about how to get more for less, when the real lesson of the day might be in understanding that less can often be more. Here are ten fairly radical lifestyle changes to consider. Adopt even one or two of these changes and you’ll not only save some serious money, you might just be happier in the end. Cancel Your Cell Phone. Only fifteen or so years ago, cell phones were virtually nonexistent, and the world seemed to work okay. Roughly 20% of American households (including mine) still don’t own a cell phone, and we manage to survive. The average cell phone plan costs more than $100 a month or $1,200 a year, and a study recently reported in the Christian Science Monitor found that the actual average cost of using a cell phone is more than $3 a minute, when you factor in unused minutes and add-on fees. Give Up Cable. Like cell phones, the average cost of most cable plans is about $100 a month or $1,200 a year. At our house, our digital-to-analog converter box is hooked up to the rabbit ears and ready to fly, and our local public library is full of DVDs we can borrow for free. That extra $1,200 sure will buy us a heck of a lot of popcorn.

Get Rid of Your Second or Third Car. The average American household now owns about 2.5 vehicles. The AAA says that the actual cost to drive the average car down the road is more than $1 per mile by the time you factor in the cost of the car, depreciation, insurance, repairs, gas, licenses and taxes. You could easily save thousands of dollars a year by sharing a single car, coordinating trips, taking public transportation, and so on. And Mother Earth will thank you too. Cancel Your Gym Membership. Go to the local thrift store, buy yourself an inexpensive used bicycle, and then ride it to the gym to cancel your membership. The average gym membership now costs about $50 per month, or $600 per year. Bicycling or walking when you run errands, and doing your own household chores (e.g. cutting your own grass, washing your car, etc.) rather than paying to have them done for you will keep you physically and fiscally fit. Prepare More Meals at Home. About 42% of what Americans spend on food is for meals prepared outside the home (i.e. in restaurants, carryout, fast food, etc.). That’s equivalent to about $2,500 for the average U.S. family. You should be able to prepare those same meals at home for about 80% less, or an annual savings of roughly $2,000. Stop Drinking Bottled Water. According to an article in the New York Times, if you drink only bottled water you’ll spend about $1,400 annually to get your recommended daily amount of H2O, as opposed to .49 cents for a year’s supply of just-as-healthy tap water. Use the calculator at NewDream.org to calculate your savings based on actual consumption. It’s also worth noting that public tap water is subject to far greater safety standards and inspections than most bottled water. Wear Out Your Clothing. Only a small fraction of the clothing we throw away in the U.S. is “worn out,” meaning it’s threadbare or horribly stained. Clearly most of us have more than enough clothes in our closets that we could easily go for six month or a year, or even longer, without needing to buy anything new. The average American family spends roughly $1,800 on clothing per year. Stop Using Credit Cards. Giving up your credit cards can save you big money in annual card fees, late charges, and interest payments, but the biggest savings will probably come from buying and spending less. Studies consistently show that most consumers a far more likely to buy something when they plan to pay with a credit card rather than with cash, and one study showed that credit card purchasers were, on average, willing to pay 30% more for the exact same item than they would be willing to pay if they were paying in cash.

Give up College Room and Board. The average cost of student room and board at colleges and universities is more than $10,000 per year. Largely gone were the days when kids are willing to live with their parents and attend a local community college or universities. Instead, they go away to school, and often rack up tens of thousands of dollars in student loans, in part because they’re paying for room and board. Ironically, when they graduate, they’re so far in debt that then move back home with mom and dad! Kick Your Bad Habits. What better time to kick bad habits like smoking, drinking and gambling? These are not only things that cost you money now, but are likely to cost you even more in the future as a result of health, medical and other personal problems down the road. Smoking a pack of cigarettes a day is probably costing you about $1,800 a year, or more than $50,000 if you live long enough to smoke for 30 years. Buying a case of beer a week is likely to cost you more than $1,000 a year, and even a few lottery tickets a week is probably costing you hundreds of dollars every year. Remember, the easiest way to double your money these days is to fold it in half and put it back in your wallet. Live Simple and Stay Cheap!

In the face of continuing economic challenges, more and more people are asking me for new ways to handle their finances. They’re more than worried—some are downright scared that they’ll never reach the

financial dreams they once had for themselves and their families. Granted, many of us are confronting new financial questions, but that doesn’t mean the answers have to be new. In fact, I believe that the financial advice that made good sense in the past still makes sense today. You probably heard this advice from your parents or grandparents or have given it to your own kids: live within your means, save for the future, create an emergency fund and stay out of debt. I know these are general ideas that are easy to talk about. The tricky part is to put them into practice, especially today. So to help you, I’ve created a kind of “to do” list for financial security. I’ve started with what I think everyone should do all the time (and especially in times like these) and then added on some age-specific ideas of what you can do to make sure you’re on top of things. What Everyone Can Do to Get Through Today’s Crunch. Here are some essential things that everyone needs to take care of. You may have heard them before, but they’re worth repeating:�•�If�you�don’t�have�a�budget,�create�one�and�live�within�it.�When�you�need to cut back, start with all those “nice to haves” like eating out, travel and entertainment. Better to use that extra money to build up your emergency fund. •�Make�sure�there’s�enough�in�your�emergency�fund�to�cover�a�minimum of three months of essential expenses and keep this money easily accessible. Depending on your job security and other assets, you may want to have up to twelve months of expenses in reserve.•�Stay�on�top�of�credit�card�debt,�paying�it�off�if�possible.�If�you’re�carrying a balance, think about ways to reduce your interest rate. Can you negotiate with your credit card company? Would a home equity loan be a better way to pay off the balance?•�Make�saving�for�retirement�a�top�priority.�Contribute�to�your�retirement accounts at least to take advantage of any employer match. Don’t leave this “free” money on the table. What To Do at 20. To give yourself a good start, be sure to live within your budget, and don’t be tempted to overspend. When it comes to credit cards, try not to carry a balance. With this under control you

can then:•�Start�saving�for�retirement.�If�you�start�putting�aside�10�percent�of�your�yearly salary now, and keep saving at this rate throughout your working life, you should be in good shape when you reach retirement age. �•�Protect�yourself—and�your�finances—with�adequate�health�insurance.�Being young and healthy is no guarantee against an accident or unexpected illness, either of which could cost many thousands of dollars. �•�Begin�to�invest�for�the�long�term.�Remember,�it’s�not�only�how�much�you have to invest, but also how long you have to invest that counts. And given current market prices, I believe the stock market potentially presents a great long-term opportunity. What To Do at 30. Your financial obligations may be greater now as you consider buying a home or having a family. Keep these things in mind as you plan for the future:��•�If�you’re�just�starting�to�save�for�retirement,�try�to�set�aside�15�to�20�percent of your annual salary in your 401(k), an IRA or another tax-advantaged account. You’re still young enough to potentially be able to benefit from today’s stock market prices.��•�Don’t�be�tempted�to�overextend�yourself�to�buy�a�home.�Remember,�a�fixed mortgage offers the maximum security over the long term.��•�If�you�have�children,�be�sure�to�set�up�a�will�and�choose�guardians.�Also think about life insurance, and start to save for college as early as you can. What To Do at 40. You’re beginning your peak earning years but, at the same time, retirement isn’t that far off. To protect yourself be sure to:�•��Keep�retirement�savings�a�priority.�If�you’re�just�getting�started�saving,�you’ll need to set aside at least 25 percent of your annual salary in a tax-advantaged account for the rest of your working life.�•��Make�sure�that�you�have�adequate�disability�insurance.�If�your�employer doesn’t provide enough, look into an independent policy. What To Do at 50. Start by carefully assessing your retirement needs, your expenses and sources of income, and how close you are to meeting your goals. Then, as you get closer to retirement:•�Look�at�your�investment�strategy,�and�consider�slowly�shifting�to�a�more conservative asset allocation.•�Think�about�purchasing�long-term-care�insurance.

Developing good habits during your working years will put you in better financial shape regardless of the economic conditions.

It is important to examine the car thoroughly in order to avoid any problems down the road. It is important, of course, to find a well qualified, honest mechanic, and that can be a difficult task in itself. One of the best ways to find a great mechanic is through word of mouth. It does not take long for the word to get out about mechanics, both good and bad. Asking around is a great way to know which neighborhood mechanics can be trusted and which ones will take you for a ride. After you have found the perfect mechanic, it is important to have them look over the condition of the vehicle carefully. One area of particular scrutiny should be the condition of belts, clamps and hoses. Simply replacing a worn radiator hose before it breaks, or a worn out belt before it snaps, can save you days of hassle and hundreds of dollars.

proper operation. Even if the weather outside is still chilly, it is a good idea to run the air conditioner for a few minutes every month to keep the system well lubricated and in good working order. If additional coolant is needed for the air conditioner, it is important to add it in the spring, before the first hot day hits.

The spring maintenance window is also a great time to address those issues you have been putting off through the winter. If the vehicle has been experiencing hard starts, a rough idle or begun to stall, it is important to have those issues diagnosed and addressed before the summer driving season begins. Look for vegetables that grow up rather than out. For example, while pumpkin plants will sprawl all over the garden, pole beans grow tall and produce more yield per square inch. Tomatoes

can be pruned to grow tall as well. Beets, carrots, leaf lettuce, peppers, radishes and cucumbers are also good choices for small space gardens.

PLAn Your PLAnTSDecide whether you want to grow your plants from seed or purchase plants that are ready to put into the ground. Growing from seed is less expensive, but it is best if you start them inside prior to planting. If you decide to go with seeds, check the backs of the seed packets to determine the length of time it takes to get the seeds started, and then how long they will take to come to fruition. Give yourself plenty of time to start the seeds so that the tender young plants can be put outside after the threat of frost has passed. Before you plant anything, make a list of what you want to grow, check the spacing required for the plants and then draw out a rough plot of your garden. Try to place the taller plants in the back, or down one side to make it easier to get through for watering, weeding and fertilizing. Forget about neat, tidy rows. Mark off square plots for specific plants and then plant them close together. You can always thin things out later if the

plants are too crowded. This will also leave less space for weeds. If you have a sunny deck or porch, consider container gardening. This will maximize the space you have available and lead to a higher yield. Herbs do very nicely in pots, and you can also grow individual tomato plants, bush beans and even squash in containers. Your containers don’t have to be fancy, but they should provide adequate drainage and absorption. Remember that you will have to water the plants growing in containers twice as often as those planted in the yard, and may have to move them around to maximize their exposure to the sun. Weed when necessary, and watch for any kind of insect infestation. Use insecticides sparingly. You might also want to consider enclosing the area to protect it from harm from either humans or wild animals. Even cats can be destructive to immature plantings. Before long, you will see the first fruits of your labor. Generally, greens, beans, peas, radishes and cucumbers will come�in�first,�followed�by�squash�and�tomatoes.�Pick�vegetables�as they are ready, and freeze what you can’t eat. Soon you will have an abundance of fresh vegetables at your doorstep, and continue to harvest until the first frost. Remember, no space is too small for a garden. nSS

I gathered various documents and papers and put each into a plastic cover and have them all corralled into a binder. These include things like utility bills, property tax statements, subdivision plot layout, subdivision rules and receipts on any repairs or upgrades to house (new lighting, new toilet, A/C repair, new roof, etc). Each of these items is dated. We also put in a floor plan and a landscape plan. Although the house has not yet sold, lookers have told us how much that folder helps. In addition, they were possibly treated with chemicals that I don’t like to have around the house. I read that I could simply use old cotton clothing and towel bits torn into shreds to bed our hamsters’ cage. Our hamsters have never been happier.
