The Shopify Junior Support Advisor application is now live!

Shopify is now hiring for their apprentice-like Junior Support Advisorrole, which offers 3 months of training and mentorship, with thepossibility of further employment.

The application portal will only be open until Tuesday August 11th at5:00pm.

Please refer all youth who are interested in this position to apply hereas soon as possible. Interviews will begin on Wednesday, August12th.

Last week, we hosted a discussion with Shopify about this role. You canfind the recording here; however, please note that some programsdetails have since shifted.

Standing Committee on Finance andEconomic Affairs

The Ontario government is currently receiving submissions from thoseindustries hit hardest by the economic collapse caused by thepandemic. Through the Standing Committee on Finance and EconomicAffairs and their study on the recommendations relating to theEconomic and Fiscal Act 2020 and the impacts of the COVID-19 crisison certain sectors of the economy, organizations have the opportunityto submit recommendations and apply to speak in front of thecommittee through official oral submission.

We encourage your organization to submit recommendations forrecovery and apply to present if you wish. First Work has applied to

present and will be happy to receive your input if you would prefer not tosend a submission from your organization.

Non-profits have been asked to file their submissions and request topresent in the Small and Medium Enterprises category. The portal toapply to present and/or deliver your submission can be found here.

Oral presentation sign-up is due today, August 7th, for opportunity topresent to the council.

ASPIRE Youth Survey

We have developed a survey to learn from youth about their careergoals to inform the design of this year’s ASPIRE events.

Our objective is to give an insight into specific industries that youth wantto be a part of and provide an opportunity to learn from and networkwith industry representatives. Participants in the survey will be enteredinto a draw for a $100 gift card.

The survey can be found here.

All information provided will be used solely for internal purposes and willnot be shared. Preliminary deadline is August 31st.

members at Futures20. Nominations are open to First Work Membersonly; organizations may nominate their projects.

The winners will be notified ahead of Futures20and announced at theConference. Winners will subsequently be profiled on the First WorkWebsite and in a social media campaign following the Futures20Conference.

For nomination purposes, activities should ideally be focused inone of the following areas of priority:

Work-integrated learning i.e. an activity or program thatintegrates academic learning with its application in theworkplace. Sector strategy development embodies a diverse mix ofindustry-specific approaches Enhancing of supports to youth with mental health or disabilitychallenges.

Emerging Leader Award Thisawardrecognizes individuals whose energy and vision havefurthered the cause of youth employment in Ontario. They have alsodemonstrated vision, collaboration and commitment in their efforts toserve their clients and communities.

A nominee must meet the following criteria:

has made a significant contribution to his/her organization,community or region, withparticular focusin one or more priorityareas;has demonstrated vision,leadership and the ability collaborate toserve the needs of their clients;has been with their current organization for less than five years.

Impact & Innovation AwardThis award recognizes projects and initiatives that demonstrate aninnovative response to an issue or challenge in the youth employmentsector, and that demonstrate promising outcomes and serve asinspirations for other service providers.

The nominated project or initiative should meet the following criteria:

The nominated project or initiative should meet the following criteria:

is a unique program or service response to a challenge facingtheir clients or community;demonstrates creativity, quality and innovation;the program or service response can serve as a model for otherservice providers;has evidence (qualitative or quantitative) of the initiative’s impacton individuals, the community, and the organization, and;is a recent initiative that has been in place for no longer than fiveyears.

Federal Government Update

In case you missed it…

Funding for Innovation in ApprenticeshipsThe Innovation in Apprenticeship Stream provides funding to supportinnovative approaches, best practices, and partnerships to address thechallenges limiting apprenticeship outcomes. The funding is availablefor non-profit organizations, but must adhere to the strict eligibilityrequirements, including targeted training for Red Seal trades. Applications are open until August 28, 2020 at 3:00 pm EDT.

Ontario Government Update

Grant Opportunity – Ontario Trillium Foundation The government has redirected $83 million in Ontario TrilliumFoundation funds to support COVID recovery through the ResilientCommunities Fund. The grants will support rebuilding the capacity ofeligible non-profit organizations that have been impacted by COVID-19. Ontario will provide grants between $5,000-$150,000 for one (or more)of five activities:

Organizational capacity building/training for rebuilding (includingresearch and development); mental health and wellness supports Prepare to develop new sources of funding and finance (includingpublic-private partnerships and social finance) Adapt/reimagine programming (e.g., personal protectiveequipment, technology, volunteer supports) Procure equipment or renovate space (capital costs) Create and/or adopt new approaches for organizations to worktogether to meet the needs of communities (e.g. professionaldevelopment, knowledge and data sharing)

Initial intake deadline: September 2nd 2020 Later intake deadline: December 2nd 2020
