ACTION TARGET BUILDS ITS FIRSTSHOOTING RANGE IN SOUTH AMERICABy: Ac'on Target
Ac'on Target recently installed a new shoo'ngrange in Brazil for the State Civil Police of Riode Janeiro (PCERJ). This is the first range builtby Ac'on Target in South America and marks amilestone for the company as it con'nues tobranch into interna'onal markets.
The new range was purchased by thePCERJ in a push to increase trainingstandards for state and local lawenforcement, but will also supporttraining for special opera2ons unitsfrom other states around Brazil aswell. It features an open air 11-‐laneshoo'ng range with user-‐friendlytarget retrieval systems fromMancom and a nine-‐room shoothouse facility.
To ensure bullet containment, thenew range also includes a steelfunnel bullet trap and safety baffleswhich provide ballis'c protec'on forthe shoo'ng area. There is no roofon the range to allow for naturalven'la'on, but the safety bafflesinstalled make sure no rounds havethe chance to escape.
One aspect of the range that isespecially important to the Braziliangovernment is its effect on theenvironment. The PCERJ range utilizes technologyfrom Action Target to ensure lead dustand debris are safely contained andcollected for recycling.
As a bullet strikes the armor steelplate of the Total Containment Trap(Ac'on Target’s patented steelfunnel bullet trap), it is forcedthrough the small horizontal openingin the middle of the funnel. Once ithas passed through the opening, thebullet enters the decelera'onchamber where it spins un'l it losesenergy. The bullet then falls into atrough where it is funneled into oneof many plas'c canisters.
The threat of lead dust created bythe impact of the bullet is alsoeliminated through a Dust Collec'onUnit which uses nega've pressure topull dust and air-‐borne toxins towardthe rear of the bullet trap where itenters a filtering system. This systemremoved 99.98% of lead and othermaterials before the air is releasedinto the environment.
Brazilian officials are also grateful for thesafety the new range will provide officersduring training situations. The old facility oftenused wood as backstops for shooting drills andpresented a significant ricochet danger fortrainees. The new range allows for nearly limitlessuse of tactical weapons from handguns to fullyautomatic rifles with complete containment. Thatassurance makes for a healthy environmentwhere law enforcement trainers can push officersto the limit without putting them in harmʼs way.
Rio de Janeiro’s law enforcementofficers will also be pushed to thelimit as they run intensive tac'caldrills in the new nine-‐room ModularArmored Tac2cal Combat House(MATCH). Equipped with a catwalkand ballis'c walls, law enforcementteams can now prac'ce essentialclose quarter skills like room clearingand hallway naviga'on with live fireweapons while under close watchfrom above.
The PCERJ range’s grand opening will be held at theend of June when it becomes fully func'onal as a lawenforcement training facility, but tours have beenongoing for those aXending the LAAD Defense andSecurity Interna'onal Exhibi'on held this week in Riode Janeiro. Ac'on Target is excited to have installedthis new shoo'ng range in Brazil and is confident thatthis important company milestone is just the first ofmany new Ac'on Target ranges in South America.
