SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER – ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY AND ORTHODONTICS

JOB DESCRIPTION HOSPITAL Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, opened in May 1975, is the only District General Hospital in the Dumfries and Galloway Health Board area. It has 392 beds, a busy Out-Patient Department and provides the main Accident and Emergency Department for the area. THE DEPARTMENTS OF ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY AND ORTHODONTICS The Departments are based within the Out-Patient complex in the District General Hospital. The Out-Patient Department is conveniently situated within the building for access to the Department of Radiology and supporting laboratory services. A well equipped Orthodontic and Oral & Maxillofacial laboratory provides central technical support. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) provides services in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for Dumfries and Galloway area. There are facilities for out patient and inpatient management of oral and maxillofacial ailments. Theatre facilities are located within the main theatre complex and in the New Day Case Unit. The Department of Orthodontics provides a consultative and specialised treatment service for Dumfries and Galloway area. Full cephalometric facilities are available and there are joint Orthognathic Clinics. The Departments are staffed by one full-time Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and one full-time Consultant in Orthodontics (the full-time Consultants are based in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary). There is also an associate specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery as well as in Orthodontics with supporting professional nursing, technical and administrative staff. There is one SHO post in OMFS/ Orthodontics along one DFT2 trainee. POST OF SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER – OMFS AND ORTHODONTICS (a) Title: Senior House Officer. The initial contract is for a six month period with a potential for

extension for another six months with mutual agreement. (b) Consultants: Consultant in Orthodontics – Mr. Sat Bhopal

Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon – Mr Shaukat Mahmood

(c) Duties: The post involves working two sessions per week within the Department of Orthodontics and six sessions per week within the Department of OMFS at the District General Hospital and one administrative session and one for study.

Occasionally there may be a need to assist a Consultant in a peripheral clinic.

OMFS 1 Attendance and Participation in diagnostic and review at Out-Patient Clinics under direction of the Consultant.

2 Attendance and participation in OMFS operating sessions on in-

patients and local anaesthetic treatment sessions on out-patients under direction of Senior Clinicians.

3 Care of in-patients admitted under the Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial

Surgeon and surgical care of in-patients admitted to the team within the Infirmary.

4 Diagnosis and treatment of OMFS emergencies.

5 Attendance and participation at local and regional Audit meetings. ORTHODONTICS 1 Attendance and participation at diagnostic and treatment clinics under

the direction of the Consultant. The management of the mid-treatment appliance failures to provide continuity of orthodontic care.

2 Attendance and participation at Orthodontic out-patient clinics to

support the Consultant in the provision of the Area Consultative Service.

3 The co-ordination of orthodontic investigatory data under the direction

of the Consultant.

4 The maintenance of contact with Dental and Medical Practitioners regarding patients undergoing orthodontic investigation and/ or treatment within the Department.

5 To support the Consultant in the direction of Orthodontic and Oral &

Maxillofacial Technical Services.

6 Occasionally the management of dental emergencies under the direction of the Consultant in Orthodontics.

7 A research programme has been defined within the Department and

encouragement and opportunity could be made for any candidate who considered a particular project worth pursuing.

(d) Annual Leave: There is a requirement to provide prospective cover for colleagues on annual and study leave.

In the event that it is a requirement to cover for a sick colleague the following provisions apply: Sick colleagues will normally be covered only for short periods of absence and then only during the standard working day.

TRAINING AND POSTGRADUATE STUDY The successful candidate must attend a “Dentist on the Ward” or similar approved course before starting employment. Funding is available. Continuous training is given during all out-patient clinics and operating sessions. The posts are approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow for MDFS and FDS examinations and Study Leave facilities are available. Encouraged to attend local and regional Educational meetings. To allow continuity of postgraduate experience a link has been established with Greater Glasgow Health Board to allow a selected candidate to join the Senior House Officer/Registrar Rotational Scheme bases at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School on completion of contract with Dumfries and Galloway Health Board. There is a library in the postgraduate medical centre of Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. CONDITIONS OF SERVICE (a) The post is governed by Whitley Council Conditions of Service. (b) The post is whole time.
