shit - hothouse theatre the dry riverbed for a night and a day. absent pets return home and families...
TRANSCRIPT
The magnificent river that defines our
regional landscape, also nourishes
our community spirit and creative
energy. For so many of us, the Murray is
the go-to place to gather joyfully, as well
as to pause, refresh and reflect.
In Caleb Lewis’ The River at the End of
the Road, we meet a man who finds such
a place. A quiet bend in a seemingly
magical river, where he can lay down his
load. We proudly join with Sport for Jove
and its acclaimed director Damien Ryan,
to open our season with a large-scale show
inspired by the Murray – which has been
two years in the making.
Come April, we amp up the family
fun, with a brief return season of
Tom Flanagan’s joyous Kaput. Then
in May (once the kids are safely tucked
in bed), our Butter Factory Theatre
transforms into a jivin’ gin joint for
Mother’s Ruin. This delicious cabaret
has become the darling of the festival
circuit, delivering the colourful history
of gin between shots of gorgeously
re-rendered pop tunes.
Hot on its heels is another festival hit,
director Susie Dee’s sensational
production of Patricia Cornelius’
SHIT. Don’t let the robust title deter you:
this knockout, award-winning show
is unmissable!
Russell Cheek is an actor/writer/
consummate storyteller who in 1993,
attempted to win the Sale of the
Century jackpot. His real-life,
genius-fuelled tale is charming, funny
and suspenseful. We roll into Spring with
artists-in-residence, The Last Great Hunt.
This ingenious troupe will journey from
Western Australia to present three of its
internationally acclaimed shows
in October.
Our blockbuster season of eight shows has
something for everyone. I warmly invite
you to join us on a BIG creative adventure
which explores the past, investigates
the present, and shimmers with future
possibilities. In 2018, we shine together!

Inspired by the majestic Murray River,
The River at the End of the Road is the
culmination of a two-year collaboration
between HotHouse and Australia’s finest
indoor/outdoor theatre company, Sport
for Jove. Written by Caleb Lewis and
directed by Damien Ryan, The River is
an epic ‘Huck Finn-style’ adventure …
with a twist.
Flo and her dad live alone on the edge
of the river. With Mum gone and Dad
busy operating the ferry, Flo dreams
of adventure, little realising how close
it lies. Every twenty years when the river
is at its lowest, a huge festival is held
in the dry riverbed for a night and a day.
Absent pets return home and families
reunite, as the living and the lost come
together for one last time.
But when Flo fails to find her mother and
the river starts to rise, she and a newfound
friend strike out for the opposite shore,
looking for answers – as her desperate
father searches for a way to bring her
safely home.
The River at the End of the Road is a rare
large-scale production developed for
Albury-Wodonga audiences, bringing
together six actors from the professional
company of Sport for Jove, and HotHouse’s
own Studio Ensemble.
“... marvellous entertainment from one of our
finest directors and a terrific company.”StageNoise (Antigone)

Lose yourself in the company of
sailors, barmaids and bootleggers
for a soulful, song-filled ode to
gin – equal parts historical and hysterical.
With tipsy candour, rising cabaret stars
Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood take us
on a sublime musical journey through
the history of ‘mother’s ruin’, aka gin.
They stumble and soar through tales of
love and women, gin and secrets, through
18th Century London, a few New York
speakeasies, colonial India, into the
Australian bush and the jungles of Peru.
Brimming with music originally performed
by Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Martha
Wainwright, The Popes, The Pretenders
and more, Mother’s Ruin premiered
to full houses and critical acclaim at
Sydney Festival, Adelaide and Melbourne
Cabaret Festivals, and they recently sold
out at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. And best
of all – for one week only – our historic
Butter Factory Theatre will be transformed
into a boozy, magical little gin joint.
Secret Password: GIN
This production contains coarse language,
and wanton tipsiness.
“ … it’s the range, depth, and content of the
stories Marsden and Wood tell us, along with the
gorgeous harmony of their pure voices, that linger
once the cabaret is over.”Time Out Sydney
“ … Marsden and Wood maintain a spot-on
balance of larky humour, bolshy political
consciousness, palpable passion for their
subject and sheer joie de vivre. Well worth
raising a glass to.”The Scotsman

A Cabaret about Gin
S HIT is a compelling, raw and
powerful play which examines the
intersections of class and misogyny.
It is provocative and tragic,
heart-breaking and bitterly funny.
What happens when a girl spits, or swears,
or screams, or shouts, or pulls down her
pants to ‘moon’ someone from a car?
If she laughs too loudly, cuts her hair too
short, or if she fights – really fights?
Out of control girls, angry girls, nasty girls
are a sight to behold. They’re terrifying,
electrifying, they’re everything girls
shouldn’t be, and we hate them. Billy,
Bobby and Sam are three such girls.
They don’t believe in anything. They’re
mean, foul-mouthed, downtrodden,
hard-bitten, utterly damaged women.
They believe the world is shit, that their
lives are shit, that they are shit.
Critically acclaimed as one of the best
plays and productions on Australian
stages in 16/17, SHIT is a four-time Green
Room Award winner (Best Production,
Best Ensemble, Best Writer, Best Set and
Costume Design). It has enjoyed five sold
out seasons for 45 Downstairs, NEON
Festival for Melbourne Theatre Company,
Sydney Festival and Darwin Festival.
This production contains
nudity and very coarse language.
Recommended for mature audiences.
“The performances from Wilks, Ward and Brady
bristle with conviction. Grotesque but utterly
authentic, they bring these difficult women to
life with every cell in their bodies.”The Age
“SHIT is a vital piece of theatre, superbly
constructed, brilliantly executed.”The Observer

In 1993, performer (and The Castanet
Club member) Russell Cheek had
a brainwave: he would climb out
of unemployed – actor poverty by
attempting to win the major jackpot
and prizes on Sale of the Century.
Now Russell takes to the stage to
evoke the spirit of 1990s Australia,
and tell the tale of one man’s quest
to scale the summit of the ‘Everest’
of Australian quiz shows.
Russell’s true story is one of dedication,
perseverance and grit. It’s also genuinely
suspenseful, and very, very funny. With
direction from Stephen Abbott (aka
The Sandman), Russell Cheek guides us
all, with the help of his very own ‘Sale’
footage, on a nail-biting journey through
a retro minefield of golf clubs,
models, cars and cash – and potential
national humiliation.
Who Am I? has charmed and delighted
audiences of all ages in Sydney,
Newcastle and Canberra, and at the
2016 Adelaide Festival.
“Mr. Cheek has a definite charm and charisma
that makes his chronicling a carefree and
comic delight.” Australian Stage
“Russell Cheek is a master narrator.
He takes the audience on a wild ride through
the history, glamour and bad attire of 1990’s
commercial television.” The Upside News (Adelaide)

I t’s Dark Outside is an epic tale of
adventure and redemption, ingeniously
exploring a subject matter close to the
hearts of families the world over –
the state of dementia. The show
has played to critical acclaim around
Australia, as well as in Japan, Taiwan
and the UK.
Created through a stunning blend of
puppetry, mask, animation and live
performance, It’s Dark Outside is the
story of an elderly man chasing his
dearest memories as they escape
into the wild. As the sun sets, and the
old man ventures into the great unknown,
he is swept up in a surreal Western
adventure, on the run: WANTED
As he moves farther away from the life
he once knew, he must evade an ominous,
shadowy figure – a mysterious cowboy
tracker, hell-bent on hunting
him down.
“A rare triumph of theatrical ingenuity
and human compassion.” The West Australian
“Beautiful, moving and captivating.” The Edinburgh Reporter

After years of delighting family
audiences all over the world, intrepid
explorer Alvin Sputnik finally visits our
little corner of the planet. In a master-
piece of invention, creator and performer
extraordinaire Tim Watts uses puppetry,
live and recorded music, and animation
to present an exploration of the next and
oldest frontier: the deep blue sea.
In the not-too-distant-future the seas
have risen, and those who survive live on
farms atop skyscrapers and mountains.
In a last ditch effort to save the human
race, our hero Alvin Sputnik must journey
down through the mysterious depths
of the deep blue sea, to find a new place
for humankind to live.
Debuting in Perth in 2009, Alvin Sputnik
is one of Australia’s most loved and toured
shows, playing to sold out houses and rave
reviews in Sydney, Melbourne, Edinburgh,
Dublin, Seoul, Taipei, Auckland, and
New York – and garnering a huge swag
of awards along the way.
“Mr. Watts creates a vivid new theatrical world ...
akin to a theatrical Wall-E.” New York Times
After a packed-to-the-rafters,
sellout season in 2017,
Tom Flanagan’s clumsy ‘Mr Fixit’,
returns to wreak comic havoc in our
Butter Factory Theatre one more time.
There are only three performances of
this joyous little show – don’t miss it!
Kaput has melted hearts around the
world (and in Albury-Wodonga) with its
glorious brand of slapstick, acrobatics
and total silliness. Be swept up in the
mayhem as one man’s life is flipped
upside-down by the lonely, dust-covered
world that surrounds him.
In the skillful style of Charlie Chaplin and
Buster Keaton, our likeable, luckless hero
struggles to get the upper hand, taking
one step forward and two steps back
until everything is … well … kaput.
Kaput is good old-fashioned, sidesplitting
fun for little kids, with plenty of naughty
winks and nods for the big ones.
“Kaput is must see fun for any age.”The Border Mail
“(Kaput) just reaches in and puts a string
of coloured lights around your heart.”The Scotsman

In 2018 our feathery friend ‘Merv’
returns once more to rule the Butter
Factory Theatre roost!
Galah Bar is a highly popular performance
platform for local talent to test and tag
evolving performance ideas in front of a
live (and mostly sober) audience. Or just
show off generally. It’s a melting pot of
indie music, opera, poetry, comedy, circus,
drag – and a few acts that defy labeling.
All Galah Bar events sold out in 2017,
proving there’s a large, loving audience
for home-grown talent!
Join us on selected Fridays throughout
the year, as the Butter Factory precinct
comes alive with the ‘scratch and squawk’
of some beautifully eclectic regional acts.
Rub shoulders with neighbours over a
delicious glass of Cofield wine or Bridge
Road craft beer, nibble, gobble or graze
on some tasty snacks, and soak up the
talent-charged atmosphere!
F AG/STAG is basically two blokes
sitting on chairs, talking about their
feelings. Or more accurately, not talking
about their feelings.
Corgan and Jimmy are BFFs. Their lives
are filled by Tinder, Grindr, white lies,
big nights and too many pints, lawn bowls,
Donkey Kong, unanswered texts, bad
sex – having to move back in with Mum
and Dad. It’s the month before the
wedding of Corgan’s ex-girlfriend, and
Corgan and Jimmy are struggling to get
their acts together enough to hire suits.
Two of Australia’s sharpest writers,
Jeffrey Jay Fowler and Chris Isaacs,
command the stage as two unreliable
narrators telling the same story from
different points of view. Mining the
idiosyncrasies of the gay man/straight
man friendship, FAG/STAG offers a truthful,
comic insight into the mind of the modern
Australian male.
“ … smart, funny and touching theatre,
slickly performed.” The Age
“Isaacs and Fowler deliver gorgeous,
nuanced performances” Australian Stage

You’re bound to love The River at The
End of the Road if you like classic
Australiana with an imaginative twist.
Think: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
meets What Dreams May Come.
And a river runs through it …
You’ll want to sing and swing with
Mother’s Ruin if you’re into: cool cabaret
with sharp commentary, cleverly
reinterpreted pop tunes, and speakeasy
vibes. Close your eyes and you’ll swear
you’re at The Famous Spiegeltent on
a warm summer night.
SHIT is extraordinary theatre, but not for
the fainthearted. Don’t miss it if you’re
drawn to uncompromising art with a
strong social conscience. It’s in the genre
of gritty storytelling like: Who’s Afraid
of the Working Class (Melbourne Workers
Theatre), Patricia Cornelius’ Love, or the
work of the legendary Keene/Taylor
Theatre Project.
We are tempted to say that the charming
Russell Cheek is The Karate Kid of the
nineties quiz show world. If you like an
against-the-odds story, with a gorgeous
dollop of nineties nostalgia, Who Am I?
is definitely for you.
It’s Dark Outside is highly visual,
imaginative storytelling. The Last Great
Hunt are the masters of genre-bending,
and IDO is no exception. The show
is a unique journey into the mind of a
man with dementia, where Philippe
Genty-style illusion meets High Noon.
Alvin Sputnik is like a magical suitcase that
pops open to reveal a world the size of an
ocean: there’s a tiny puppet hero with a
huge heart, super-cool animation and one
tall dude who masterminds it all. One for
families and kids with wild imaginations,
and a taste for the weird and wonderful.
When we say Kaput is for the WHOLE
family, we really mean it. Whether you’re
five or ninety-five, you’ll fall in love with
the comic genius of local wunderkind
Tom Flanagan. Remember Buster Keaton,
Charlie Chaplin, Donald O’Connor?
Prepare to laugh yourselves silly.
Fag/Stag is a gay/straight bromance
for the young at heart. The two guys at
the centre of its storytelling live in
the here and now, but tread the same
soul-searching streets of generations
of lost boys before them.
Warm, intimate, truthful.
For a whole month in Spring, HotHouse
will play host to seven members of
Western Australia’s ground-breaking
performance-making collective
The Last Great Hunt. This remarkable
company is a small but powerful engine
room of Australian theatrical innovation,
experimenting playfully with form,
genre and diverse subject matter.
In their own words: “We are creators,
innovators, and above all else, explorers.
Within each show, we hunt for new ideas
and new ways of connecting with our
expanding audience. We make a range
of new and exciting theatre in a variety
of forms and styles, including new writing,
visual and physical theatre and
interactive experiences.
We strive to give our audience an engaging,
challenging and moving night out at
the theatre.”
During its residency, The Last Great Hunt
will draw inspiration from our regional
setting to develop a new work (giving us a
sneak peek along the way), run workshops,
and most importantly for our audiences –
present three of its award-winning shows,
It’s Dark Outside as part of our subscription
season, and two extras – The Adventures of
Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer for family
audiences, and Fag/Stag.
The Last Great Hunt residents:
Gita Bezard, Adriane Daff,
Jeffrey Jay Fowler, Arielle Gray,
Chris Isaacs, Katt Osborne, Tim Watts.
