KEY FINDINGS
Is Shiraz/Syrah South Africa’s best red wine category overall? Based on this tasting, the answer would be an emphatic “Yes”. Out of the 83 entries from 67 producers, more than half – 45 to be precise – rated 90-plus on the 100-point quality scale and all of the top 10 rated 93 or above, the Elim 2017 as made by De Grendel gaining an outstanding 95.
At the time of political transformation in the 1990s, Shiraz plantings were not extensive but there was a general sense that the variety might do well here. It went from 4% of the national vineyard in 1999 to just over 10% in 2014 where it has just about stabilised. Total area under vineyard at the end of 2018 was 9 497ha (10.2% of the national vineyard), making it the second most widely planted red variety after Cabernet Sauvignon – it has become a very important variety within the industry in a relatively short time.
Consider this year’s top 10 and it appears that part of its success is that is well suited to a variety of growing conditions with two each from Stellenbosch, Swartland and Walker Bay and one each from Bot River, Cederberg, Elim and Franschhoek.
Another reason for the rise of Shiraz is that it seems to respond well to a variety of winemaking approaches. In the most basic terms, two broad stylistic groupings can be discerned, the first consisting of wines that are overtly aromatic, lighter bodied yet grippy and the second more darkly coloured, full-fruited and smooth textured, these very often being of equal merit.
If too many examples of local Shiraz tended towards generic red wine a decade ago, often too sweet and lacking the trademark aroma and flavour of pepper, there are now far more wines of distinction, the panel speculating that this was the result of 1) increased vine age and 2) growing viticultural and winemaking sophistication.
With regards the second point, it is clear that many winemakers are opting for at least an element of whole-bunch fermentation (leaving the berries on the stems) in order to make the aromatics more fragrant and lend a certain firmness to the tannins and this seems to be deftly handled in most instances. Oaking regimes also seem to be done with particular care and generally the wines appear nicely facilitated.
When it comes to the pricing of the category, this appears particularly muddled, producers apparently not sure where to position their respective offerings. The average cellar-door price of the 45 wines to rate 90-plus is R230, 41 a bottle, the least expensive being the 92-point Franschhoek Cellar Baker Station 2017 selling for R76 a bottle and the most expensive being the 90-point GlenWood Grand Duc Syrah 2016 at R600 a bottle. Within the top 10, four wines come in at under R120 a bottle (see below) which is great news for consumers but surely not realistic for producers in the long-term.
JUDGING PROCEDURES
The judging panel was chaired by myself and further consisted of two trusted colleagues, namely Roland Peens and James Pietersen, both of Wine Cellar, a Cape Town firm which brokers and cellars fine wine. We tasted blind, ratings done according to the 100-point system. Final scores were awarded on the basis of discussion that involved retasting where necessary rather than relying solely on arithmetic averaging.
