Shipbuilders Take Advantage of HHWD and Shredding EventOn Sept. 20, more than 150 Newport News Shipbuilding employees took advantage of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) sponsored Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) and Shredding Event.

“One of the lessons learned from the 2013 event was to advertise further in advance,” said Frank Thorn, EH&S manager. “So this year we started advertising two months prior to the event and it really made a difference. Shipbuilders Hold Luncheon to Collect School SuppliesPrior to the end of Newport News Shipbuild-ing’s School Tools drive, shipbuilders working in Bldg. 74 held a potluck luncheon to collect school supplies. The team was able to fill three boxes full of new supplies for area students.

“Everyone in the building was encouraged to bring in a dish and five dollars in school supplies,” said David Sauer (X75). “There is a strong sense of pride that goes with being part of such a generous group of shipbuilders. Everyone who attended and those who couldn’t attend but donated supplies really stepped up and went above and beyond all expectations. Thanks again to all the generous participants!”

On Sept. 30, 1937, the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV 5) was commissioned. CV 5 was the lead ship in her class and was the first of two Newport News Shipbuilding-built carriers with the name “Yorktown.”

CV 5 was lost in June 1942 at the Battle of Midway in World War II. NNS shipbuilders requested that a new carrier be built at the yard and be given the name, “Yorktown.” The U.S. Navy agreed and a second Yorktown (CV 10) was built.
