DIFFICULTY: MEDIUMShining StarCreated by DIY hacker, woodworker and teacher, Kerryn Carter of Toolschool, brighten up your Christmas with this shining Star, complete with LED lights for extra twinkle.

CATEGORY: HOLIDAY PROJECT

Tools used:

18V ONE+ JIGSAW

18V ONE+ GLUE GUN

18V ONE+ PALM SANDER

18V ONE+ DRILL DRIVER

Hold it downClamp down pegboard to a stable and secure surface. Using the Ryobi ONE+ Jigsaw, follow your stencil line and cut out all sides.

TIP: move the piece of wood around to suit you, turning and re-clamping as you go. The jigsaw should always be moving away from you, with your weight firmly holding down the tool.

Make the cutTo cut the sides of the star, first set your Ryobi ONE+ Jigsaw to a 45 degree bevel angle. Clamp down lengths of 19mm dressed pine and cut length of wood so that the long side is 93mm in length.

Keep it in lineBetter safe than sorry, check your first piece up against the side of the pegboard star to ensure it’s the right size. The piece will be a little shorter than the side of the star as we need to allow room for the other pieces to slide in next to each other. . Repeat so you have 10 identical strips.

Hold it togetherUsing the Ryobi ONE+ Glue Gun, glue the pine lengths to the star. The long side should be the side you stick to the edge of the pegboard. Repeat until all sides are complete.

Back it upSo that you get an accurate backing plate, lay the star down on a sheet of 7mm ply and trace around the edges of the star.

Using the Ryobi ONE+ Jigsaw, cut around your pencil outline.

Here’s the drillAlong each side of your star’s backing plate, drill a hole using a 5mm drill bit and your Ryobi ONE+ Drill Driver. These holes should only be 4.5mm away from the edge.

Shining StarTake the battery powered LED Curtain String Lights and insert each individual light into a pegboard hole. Before moving to the next step, make sure all lights are secure and won’t fall out.

Close it upPlace the backing plate onto the star frame, ensuring the Curtain String Light battery pack is left out.

With your Ryobi ONE+ Drill Driver, drill a pilot hole of 3mm then screw the backing plate on securely with 10 x woodscrews.

Sink or swim (optional)Using a countersink bit, make holes in line with your pre-drilled holes.

TIP: Countersinking the holes gives you a flush finish on the backing. If you don’t have a countersink bit, this step can be skipped and you can just screw backing directly onto the star frame.

You’ve got the power!Using your Ryobi ONE+ Glue Gun, stick the LED Curtain String Light battery pack to the outside of the star’s backing plate.

Tree Topper (optional)If you’re making the Ryobi Christmas Tree and want to use this star as the tree topper, using 6mm drill bit, drill a hole into one of the angled sections of the star. This will then sit on the dowel piece you inserted into the tree’s trunk (refer to Wooden Christmas Tree build guide).

Finish it offPut batteries in the Curtain String Lights, turn on, stand back and admire. You’re the real superstar!
