Who am I?A husband, a parent…An educator, a student…A thinker, a dreamer…An agent of change.

Think Good Thoughts, Say Good Words, Do Good Deeds.~~~

Vice Principal Coquitlam Open Learning

Lead Administrator Inquiry Hub Secondary School

Share with you the amazing

transformation happening in

education.

Inspire you to see that you are part of

the change that you want to see in

education.

Learning intentions:

Since you chose a session like this,

I am going to make a few

assumptions:

You think our educational systems can be better?

Do you believe the youth of today, 'our' children, deserve the best education

that we can give them?

Do you want to contribute to making that change, even in the smallest of ways?

Yes No

Great!Then please

do me a favour…Because it will

do you a favour…(And help us all shift!)

Everybody please cross your arms…

Everybody please cross your arms…

Now switch them around!

Everybody please cross your arms…

Keep them crossed (relax) and watch the next video...

Welcome to the Bronze Age

“As a general rule, adults are much

more likely to act their way

into a new way of thinking

than to think their way

into a new way of acting.”

Surfing the Edge of Chaos pg. 14

Still have your arms crossed?

For many people switching arms is

uncomfortable, but the act of switching

and staying switched, makes it more

comfortable.

You’ve acted your way into

a new way of thinking…

Shifting language and perspective:

Are we working from the right perspective in education?

Are we using the right metaphors?

Maybe we need to shift our thinking too!

“Metaphors We Live By ”—metaphors that can shape our

perceptions and actions without our ever noticing them.”

Lakoff & Johnson

met·a·phor

If our metaphors shape our perceptions and actions, then why don’t we shift to more compelling metaphors when we

talk about educational transformation?

Learning is an ACTION:

But changing the metaphors isn’t enough…

We need to change what we do!

You are the Lead Learner! It STARTS

WITH YOU, and

then…

What can we do to

help students leave our schools

feeling like they are inspired and

empowered learners?

There is a SHIFT happening! A CHANGE in PERSPCTIVE…

And some of them will fail…

(Or at least I hope so!)

And some of them will fail…

Because if none of them did…

Then we didn’t push them hard enough!
