Mark spencer Article : I have said since I was elected that I have two

major priorities for Sherwood. The fi rst has always been to improve road safety and the second, and in many ways the trickier of the two, is jobs. I know when we talk about unemployment and people struggling to get into work, the assumption is generally that we mean young people – school leavers and graduates mostly – but I think where we are facing a real challenge is with helping mums get back into work. It’s clear to me that we have talented and qualifi ed women up and down the country who are keen to get back into the workplace but who need adequate support to do so. I recently met with a group of mums in the constituency to talk about how childcare could better work for them and it’s pretty clear that when it’s costing £190 a week in childcare to be able to earn £200 a week at work, something’s wrong.Good quality child care needs to be more fl exible, cheaper and easier to access. Of course we all know that public fi nances are under pressure, it almost goes without saying these days, but the incentives to get women like those I met last month back into the workplace are obvious.

Keeping talent frustrated and at home doesn’t make sense and it’s something I’m determined to bring to Ministers’ attention over the next couple of months.Of course times have moved on and dads have a bigger role to play now than ever before. I’m pleased the Government has taken some practical steps to allow couples to juggle work and family better and working parents can now share up to a year’s leave after the birth of their child. The benefi ts of these changes are obvious: employers will benefi t from a more fl exible labour market which will allow businesses more freedom in how they manage their staff. The new entitlement will also allow both parents to keep a strong link with their workplace, helping employers to attract and retain women in their organisations and preventing women dropping out of the workforce following childbirth.I have been assured that Ministers are in ‘listening mode’ and that the Government is committed to investing to provide more help to working families to cut the cost of childcare and enable parents who want to go out to work to do so. Ministers are also keen to emphasise they understand that childcare must be of a high standard that parents can have confi dence in.It feels that things are moving in the right direction and that with a bit of common sense we might actually be able to make a big and positive difference for working

mothers. This is clearly something which matters locally and nationally and I’m determined to keep banging the drum.

If, as ever, you have a view on this or there’s anything else you want to raise with me, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line at: [email protected] more info or to arrange an interview with Mark, contact: Madeleine Burns, offi ce: 0115 968 1186,Email: [email protected]

Local club gets capital recognition

A local Young Engineers club has been named as one of the fi nalists through to the National Science and

Engineering Competition to be held in London this March. The Joseph Whitaker school Young Engineers club, run by Phil Worsley, a teacher at the school, have already had major successes, when last March they were named the East Midlands STEM Club of the Year at the East Midlands Big Bang Fair, and Most Interactive Club at Yorkshire and Humberside in June. We have designed and manufactured a massive 6 foot wind tunnel that we use to test and visualise how aerodynamic car shell designs are. We were then asked to make one for the ByDesign group – James Edge (pictured). ByDesign is an education company and the wind tunnel is now being used in many schools all over the country to explain and teach aerodynamics.Other projects include a 60MPH paper aeroplane launcher, A water powered bottle rocket launcher, a Massive 3-D steady hand game, A air powered rocket car project for our primary schools and a battery powered racing car for the Greenpower racing challenge.See their achievements at www.facebook.com/JWSYoungEngineersAlso our website - www.josephwhitaker.notts.sch.uk/YE/Also on Twitter – www.twitter.com/JWSYEPeople can also follow our blog as we work towards the competition in London which runs from the 14-17 March.Photo L-R: James Edge – from ByDesign, who asked us to design a Wind Tunnel, Joel Sadler (Y9), James Cross (Y9), Joe Kibble (Kneeling Y9), Josh Tickle (Y9), Alex Taylor (back Y9), Kristyn Hudson (front Y11), Elliot Widgery (Y10), Will Whitlam (Y10), James McBrien (Y10), Connie Paulson (Y11), George Eves (Y8), Charlie Spencer (kneeling Y8), Harry Wright (Y8), Mr Worsley – Teacher

Free advice on keeping warm and reducing energy bills this winter Residents can get free advice on how to keep their homes warm in winter and save money on energy bills. In the wake of increasing energy costs, Mansfi eld District Council is providing free energy advice that is tailored to individual residents and their properties. The Council’s trained and impartial offi cer can conduct a home visit to provide residents with simple tips and advice that could potentially save hundreds of pounds a year, as well as helping to keep them healthy. They can provide residents with advice on how to understand the information on energy bills, how to set their heating effi ciently, check they are on the most suitable tariff, and answer any questions they may have. Residents could save hundreds of pounds off energy bills by effectively heating their homes. Simple changes around the home can save as much as £110 on annual energy bills. Bigger changes, such as the installation of a new energy-effi cient boiler, loft insulation or wall insulation could save in excess of £300 a year.Cold homes also have a signifi cant impact on people’s health and can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression. One of the best ways of keeping well during winter is to stay warm. Portfolio Holder for Housing Strategy and Regeneration Councillor Derek Evans said: "With energy costs rising, this free advice service is an excellent way for people to potentially save money on their energy bills and stay warm in winter. A trained offi cer can visit your home and identify any energy ineffi ciencies, or ways of cutting costs. It is often the case that simple changes made to the home can result in big savings."If you are interested in receiving advice, a FREE energy audit, or more information please contact 01623 463472.

What’s OnPaloma Faith announces forest concert tour for the summerThe captivating Paloma Faith is the latest act to announce that she will be performing concerts in seven spectacular woodland locations this summer as part of the Forestry Commission’s Forest Live concert series.

Released in 2009, debut album, ‘Do You Want the Truth, or Something Beautiful?’ introduced Paloma Faith and a glossy ensemble of retro-referencing soul and sassy pop songs. From the brass-blasted stomp of ‘Stone Cold Sober’ to the quirky ‘Upside Down’, and the epic sweep of her biggest chart hit ‘New York’, the record went on to sell over half a million copies.

Faith’s 2012 sophomore album, ‘Fall To Grace’, continues to build upon the success of her debut release. A collection of compositions in a new contemporary realm, chart success has already been assured with singles ‘Picking Up the Pieces’, ‘30 Minute Love Affair’, ‘Just Be’ and her enchanting cover of ‘Never Tear Us Apart’. Her achievements have been recognised by the music industry with Brit Award nominations. Her platinum selling

album ‘Fall To Grace’ is up for Best Album, and she has also been nominated for Best British Female.

Commenting on her Forest Live dates and her Brit nominations, Paloma Faith said, “I’m really excited about these shows. It’s going to be a great experience so I hope you will be able to join me on my woodland adventure this summer. I am delighted to have been nominated for these Brit awards. I don't expect to win, but it's so wonderful to be acknowledged for contributing something to British music. I am very proud to be British and so happy to do something I love.”

Forest Live is an independent programme organised by the Forestry Commission bringing music to new audiences without commercial branding or sponsorship. Income generated from ticket sales is spent on improving the local forests for both people and wildlife. With everything required for a great night out, including full catering and bar facilities, the gigs are renowned for their relaxed atmosphere.

Paloma Faith plus special guests will be performing:

How Safe is your home?

Reluctant Gardener February

Remember to dig over the beds and bor-ders mixing in organic material, but only if the ground is not frozen. Forking the soil aerates and brings pests to the surface for the birds.

With the risk of frost and snow leave the vulnerable plants protected with fl eece and raise pots off the ground a little.

Any tender trees and shrubs will love a generous application of dry mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions.

Once the ground isn’t frozen, start to make new beds and borders - marking shapes with sand trickled from a plastic bottle, then remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over.

If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere in a corner - after 1 to 2 years it will rot down into good compost.

Remember not to let rotting damp leaves accumulate around alpine plants - they will suffer if left damp too long.

When the weather is settled, start to clear paths of weeds, check walls, clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure your heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation with bubble wrap will make a difference to your heating bill.

Clean and repair your garden tools or send to the local hard-ware repair-person to service them. Book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot, especially at the base of the legs or where water can be trapped and freeze during the winter.

When it is warm enough, paint sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative using a stiff brush or a modern sprayer to do the job quicker and can get into awkward shapes.

Don’t forget the birds - some peanuts, fat balls and other treats will help them during this time of scarce food. Try not to feed bread as this lacks the energy content to help birds survive, but is better than nothing.

Look forward to Spring, lighter nights from now on and perhaps some warmer sunny days too.

But Ralph has grown disillusioned with his role, especially since once the game play is done for the day, he must retreat to the nearby brick dump for the night, all while Felix enjoys the congratulations and company of the game’s other characters.Even his support group of fellow arcade game villains can’t boost his spirits. But when one of the building residents says he’ll be welcome at their parties if he can prove he can be a hero by winning a medal, Ralph goes rogue and leaves his game.

Create a sacred space to allow your energy to settle and balance your mind with meditation; allow yourself to say ‘no’ and dedicate time to you. Pay particular attention to all forms of communication, especially if serious. HEALTH: Don’t stagnate or become too inert, take regular exercise, even a brisk walk daily. Reduce your intake of refi ned sugars and coffee, replace with fresh fruit or juices. 7 Metal Star – Well done, you’ve turned a corner and can fi nally relax a little, look back over things and say, I did that! This is a year for broadening your social circle and taking is easier. It’s a time to refl ect inwards too, look at your own development spiritually, as well as saying yes to all the party invitations. Take care not to slacken the purse strings too much! HEALTH: Take care of bones and ligaments; stay fl exible! Avoid too much cold food or meals straight from the fridge. Singing or chanting can be most benefi cial this year.6 Metal Star – From last years’ changes, you fi nd yourself in a stronger and better position for making those important decisions, especially if you’ve been holding back. You’re renewed sense of authority and confi dence may come across as overbearing to others so remember to listen too. Your clarity of thought and ability to focus on work or personal projects will produce some inspiring results, as well as profi t. HEALTH: Look after your lungs and large intestine this year. Yoga this year would be most benefi cial as we have a tendency to contract and stiffen when in this house.5 Earth Star – This is your year for

change, reinvention and re-birth. Often a fl uctuating, shifting year of ups-and-downs, so try to stay centred and as grounded as possible. It can also be a year of unexpected opportunities, so allow things to come to you, rather than being the one to search. Your connectivity to all those around you is heightened, as you are the one in focus. This is not a great year for making major decisions or for moving house. HEALTH: Balance is key; avoid extremes in lifestyle or diet. Look after your immune system, spleen and pancreas by reducing your intake of processed foods and refi ned sugars.4 Wood Star – The key for this year is ‘pace yourself’. Make a concerted effort to complete projects and little jobs; you will fi nd them soon piling up, as you gather speed and momentum in your life. You may feel unstoppable and want to take on board every opportunity and every responsibility that presents itself; just remember to take time out, before you burn out! Stick with the game plan, and develop what you have sown rather than change tack. HEALTH: Create a routine both for your diet and exercise this year, avoid excess of alcohol and late night snacks. Don’t suppress frustration or anger as this may affect your liver.3 Wood Star – Things are fi nally starting to shift for you now, forward movement, impetus and opportunity; an upward, progressive time lay ahead! Make the most of this metaphorical ‘spring’ year, a great time to start new projects and businesses. You will feel more vibrant generally and can expect to have great insight this year, be wise with what you sense or see. Be creative and spontaneous, yet stifl e knee-jerk decisions and deliberate fi rst. HEALTH: Avoid eating late at night, two hours before bed minimum. Take action if you feel mentally angry or frustrated, vent these emotions productively.2 Earth Star – This can often be a frustrating year, as it precedes ‘spring’ in

this system. It is a time of preparation; to make sure all those stepping-stones are fi rmly planted and laid out in front of you to sprint along in 2014. Take this year as a cleansing year, one to get rid of excess baggage, unwanted and unproductive habits. Be patient with yourself, forcing issues may just make them worse, allow changes to happen; go with the fl ow. HEALTH: Keep physically active; don’t become too stagnant or inert, take regular exercise and get your heart pumping and lungs full of oxygen.1 Water Star – A deep, spiritual year, a time to pay yourself attention. It’s a year of planning ahead and getting the ‘seed’ ready for the next cycle of growth. Don’t be alarmed if you feel out of touch or receive less invites to socialise, it’s hard to look inside if you are too busy outside of yourself. Start meditating or join your local Buddhist centre and expand your spiritual awareness. HEALTH: Keep warm and hydrated; avoid cold foods straight from the fridge. You may fi nd it harder than usual to recover from illness, so act promptly with the onset of any sickness.

Writing a will, one New Year’s resolution worth keeping95 per cent of Britons made at least one New Year’s resolution at the stroke of midnight, but within seven days, 48 per cent will have given up and 88 per cent will have returned to their old ways by the end of January. But making a will to protect your loved ones in the event of your death could be a quick and easy New Year’s resolution to tick off the list.Ann Farnill, solicitor at Tallents in Southwell says: “The fi rst step in making a will is as easy as picking up the phone and calling your solicitor to make an appointment. With years of experience in helping to draft wills, we can help everyone through the process, quickly and simply. “We know that no one wants to think about his or her own mortality, but you never know what’s around the corner. And the last thing you want to do, when your loved ones are mourning you, is leave them with a tangled fi nancial mess because you died without a will.”

Having a valid and up to date will is vitally important if:You are not married to, or in a civil relationship with your partnerYou have separated from your spouse or civil partner

You have children from a former marriage or relationship that you want to provide forYou have a disabled relative you wish to provide for.Ann continues: “Once you’ve made your appointment, the will-writing process is more straightforward that people often think. We’ll ask clients to think about six key areas:

List what you own. For example: property, savings, stocks and shares, insurance policies, business interests and pensions.Family and benefi ciary details. Full names of your spouse, partner, children or other parties fi nancially dependent on you.Decide who gets what. Full names and addresses of the people you wish to benefi t from your estate. Think about how you would like your assets divided between them. Perhaps you’d like to leave a legacy to grandchildren or a charity, or bequeath a special piece of jewellery or furniture to a loved one? This is the point when you can decide who will receive your bequests.Executors. These will be the people who ensure your last wishes are carried out and they will administer your Will for you. You can choose whoever you want to be an executor: family member, friend or a professional, such as your solicitor. The executor can also be a benefi ciary in your will. We would always recommend that you choose at least two executors to cover

situations where one is unable, or unwilling to act. And you should always check to make sure the executors are happy to take on this role before you sign your will.

Guardians. You may wish to name legal guardians for any children under the age of 18 when you die.Other wishes. Perhaps you have a specifi c funeral in mind, or prepay for your funeral? You can use your will to be specifi c about your fi nal wishes. If you’ve already made a will, then Tallents recommend you review it every fi ve years, or if circumstances change. For example: marriage, separation, divorce, the birth of a child or grandchild, the death of a benefi ciary in your will or moving home.

Ann fi nishes: “Many people fi nd great comfort in making a will. It doesn’t have to be a maudlin time, instead it can be a period of review and introspection, and often results in a renewed enthusiasm for the future knowing that there’s one less thing to worry about.

“Why not make 2013 the year you actually stick to a New Year’s resolution and complete your will?”

Hi there Rainworth Folk. The Parish Council precept is a tax charged on each property in the parish and is used to fund all the activities your Parish council undertakes for the benefi t of your community, At the January meeting, the Parish Council decided to increase the precept from £50,000 to £52,500. This equates to about an extra 80p per household per year and will be collected through your council tax bill. There have also been statutory changes, directed by central government, to the Council Tax Base. Newark & Sherwood District Council has determined that it will make a one off payment to Parishes for 2013/2014, to protect them against the net effect of these adverse changes. Rainworth Parish has been awarded £4,050. We are very concerned about the worsening state of our roads and continue to press Highways potholes to be fi lled. Our roads need considerably more that. However, cuts at County Council, have left Highways understaffed and underfunded. Residents are welcome to contact Customer Services themselves on 0300 500 8080, but Councillors and the Parish Clerk are happy to do this for you. The same applies to the ongoing problems of street lighting and damaged or missing street signs. Hopefully, the Ward Walk, on the 30th January, will provoke some action on the issues that are upsetting residents.

County Councillor Merry attended the meeting briefl y in order to present a cheque of £2,000 to the ‘Notjustswimming’ group, towards the cost of the planning application. Some of you have enquired about the Boundary Review. Unfortunately, this is not going to result in the unifi cation Rainworth under one council and there seems to be little or no appetite on the part of the Boundary Commission to embark on such an undertaking, but is for the purposes of maintaining electoral parity and endeavouring to reduce the number of councillors. So, we will continue to be Rainworth Village but pay our taxes and dues to separate councils. Councillors meet informally Wednesday mornings. Pop in for a cuppa and a chat. Dawn Jones, Parish Clerk 01623 490259 [email protected] Parish Offi ce is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9am-2pm Next Parish Council meeting. Thursday 14th February 2013 7pm. Councillor John Bradbury & John MiddletonThe Planning Inquiry at Kelham Hall looked at the recent proposals for Rainworth. The Top Street development (54 dwellings) was discussed fi rst with access being the main question. It was stated that arrangements for access to the allotments would be via the estate. The only potential problem for this site was that there could be an archaeological report needed which might delay matters. The developers’ agent said that they would expect to be up and running within 5 years. The Warsop Lane development (194 dwellings) was dealt with next and very little was challenged by the District Council or the other bodies. The Developers’ Agent said that they would expect to be putting in for Planning Permission within months of the Inspector’s report. The Mixed Use development behind “The Venue” was discussed next with very little dissent and no start date was mentioned. Following this the “Employment” land to the west of

Colliery Lane was discussed. The developers’ Agent said that, owing to the expense of providing access to the bypass and dealing with fl ood risk it was an impossible project and recommended that the site be used for housing. He then started to promote the proposed development on the old Colliery site for a large business park. Which has an extant planning permission application in place, on the area that UK Coal should be restoring to heath-land. You may remember that this was the proposed Incinerator site which was refused by an earlier Inquiry. He also mentioned that the Park could stretch from Rainworth into Clipstone and that there would be rail access to the site (UK Coal are having the old track from Network Rail.

Friends of Tippings WoodWell we’ve had the shortest day so the theory is we are heading towards spring, hard to appreciate when surrounded by a cold, but magical white world. But underneath the frosty covering bulbs are pushing through and hardy plants getting ready to burst out when the sun reaches them. In the meantime don’t forget the birds who struggle to fi nd enough to eat in the icy conditions. It is such a pleasure and a privilege to see the birds in your garden and feeding them in winter improves their prospects of surviving into the breeding season. However, it can be an expensive business in these tough economic times so how can we still continue? Make every grain count! Don’t put too much out at one time as it goes soggy and mouldy. Big birds, like wood pigeons and magpies and of course squirrels are so greedy and hog the lot but you could use feeder cages so smaller birds get a look

in. A small amount of kitchen scraps, such as bread, cake and apples are fi ne but avoid greasy or salty foods. Also, avoid dried foods such as pasta, rice and dried fruits. You could make your own suet cake by adding seeds and mealworms. If you want to attract a great variety of birds they are attracted by mealworms, sunfl ower and nijer seeds, great sources of protein to really give them a boost. And don’t forget water! Hopefully our well fed birds will delight us in spring with lots of healthy chicks. If you would like to join us for a day please ring 07950 646620.Be our eyes and ears and look after Tippings Wood. Report criminal damage to the non-emergency Police number on 101.They may not attend, but it is important to record any issues so that further action can be taken. Friends of Tippings Wood.

A SPONSORED 24 HOUR MARATHON.

As per our article in the January issue, the “Rainworth Riders” a group of cyclists along with members of our branch of the Royal Brit-ish Legion. Are holding a sponsored 24 hour Marathon at the Venue in Rainworth starting at 4.00pm on Friday March 8th 2013 and fi nishing at 4.00pm on Saturday March 9th 2013.

The Rainworth Riders will be on two static cycles (Spinners) which they hope to keep running for the full 24 hours, barring accidents, having two machines will ensure that at least one cycle will complete the full 24 hours if not both; members and friends of the Legion Branch will accompany the riders on a rowing machine for the full 24hours.

The Rainworth Riders have insisted that all sponsorship money is to go to the Royal British Legion and have agreed that part will go towards a badly needed PA system for the branch, whilst hopefully the majority will go towards the Branches Poppy Ap-peal fund; the Rainworth Riders will decide on the fi nal split.

During February, notices about the event will be posted throughout the two villages of Rainworth and Blidworth along with details on where to obtain sponsorship forms. If there are any businesses or individuals who would like to sponsor the event could they please contact the honorary branch secretary Jim Filby at: 72 Appleton Road, Blidworth, Notts NG21 0SQ. Mob: 07768 742111 or email: jim@fi lby.info; or call in at the Venue in Rainworth.

After the event, on the Saturday evening, starting at 7.30pm in the Venue, Rainworth. There will be an evenings entertainment where we can relax and enjoy ourselves. There will be a raffl e, tickets will be on sale during the evening and earlier during the 24 hour Marathon. Also between the acts a few games with prizes will be organised to try and get you to part with even more of your hard earned money. We hope that towards the end of the evening we will be able to announce approximately how much money we have made.

It will be hard work over the two days for the Riders, Rowers and their support teams, we do hope that the money collected/donated will make all the effort worthwhile.

Blidworth & District Historical SocietyAt our fi rst meeting of the New Year on 8th January, the Chairman, John Smallwood, had the very sad duty to tell the members that founder member and President of the Society, Bill Richards, had passed away the previous week. Bill was 96 years old and except for war service had spent all of his life in Blidworth. He was a local historian of note and had written books and numerous articles on the history of Blidworth and district. He will be sadly missed by all of our members. Later, members Joan Smith and Barbara Evans spoke fondly of their memories of Bill. The main speaker of the evening was Bill Taylor who talked us through many photographs of our local railways from the early 19th century to the present day. Much of the presentation was about Mansfi eld and the line to Southwell which once passed through Blidworth. At the refreshment break members were able to browse through a selection of photographs from the Society’s archives prepared by Eric Hall. Joan Smith brought in a brass plaque in memory of a horse called ‘Cyclops’ that had been killed at Newstead Abbey gates in 1853. The plaque itself had led an interesting life, having being taken down from its original site it had become a mending plate for an ash pan, rescued

from a blacksmiths scrap pile at Kirklington Hall, taken to Tasmania by Joan’s brother, eventually being sent back to Joan. Both photographs and plaque caught the interest of members. Following the break, members Alan Higgins and Derek Wilson continued their slide presentation of Blidworth Colliery. This time they concentrated on the end of an era when the Colliery closed. Our next meeting will be on February 5th when Stuart Reddish will give a presentation on ‘Thynghow - a Viking age site in Sherwood Forest. Our meetings start at 7 pm and we would be very grateful if everyone could be seated by that time. We meet on the fi rst Tuesday of the month at the Methodist Chapel on Main Street, Blidworth. Ample parking is available at the rear of the building. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night.

There is normally a small charge of £2 which includes refreshments. If you have any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our archive we would be most grateful. If you would like more information please contact me, Dale Smallwood, Secretary, on 01623 479978 or visit our website. Our website is well worth viewing so why not ‘have a peek’ and if you would like to add more information to it, or photographs/articles, please contact us on the number above.www.blidworthhistoricalsociety.co.uk

Bards at BlidworthLove is at the core of all things with many attempts to defi ne it. We tend to think of romantic love initially but it reveals itself in many other forms in relationships. Also, love has areas to write about - if they apply: love for a partner, children, relations, friends, pets ad infi nitum - and love in a spiritual sense.... exploring with thoughts and feelings beyond physical realms, into an almost wordless, remarkable state of joy, despite events that temporarily suspend us in pessimism. It is often said that without sadness, we can’t fully appreciate joy.. Many speak of the healing power of poetry - of how the very act of pouring out any sadness that we experience, is a kind of exorcism - a relieving of pain. When a poem works especially well, in terms of form and structure, there is a kind of equilibrium, a synchronicity, whatever the mood and tone of the writing. Sharing what we write, invites feedback ‘oh yes - I have felt like that too,’ a connectivity - ubuntu as Desmond Tutu would say! All is interconnected, part of Oneness, yet all people unique. How do we share personal perspectives? Language is often ambiguous, leading us into a personal way to express ourselves, to fi nd our own ‘voice.’ Respecting points of view essential for harmonious relationships. When poetry blends with music, something powerful can happen - the sharing can have a collective effect upon many. There are so many examples of this. Lyrics can be enriched by melody and vice versa. The poignant words of William

Butler Yeats in the poem Down by the Sally Gardens speak of unrequited love, even more poignant with the melodyand the poem made into a song. Ewan McColl expressed his love for Peggy Seeger, composing a song, The First time Ever... during 8 minutes of a transatlantic phone call. A popular song, When I fall in Love by Victor Young and Edward Heyman, expresses gently but profoundly, what many have felt. Nat King Cole’s version is an all-time favourite. What lyrics would you write as a Valentine card?Christine Michael, http://www.thynkspublications.co.uk/ Nature BoyThere was a boyA very strange enchanted boyThey say he wandered very farVery far, over land and seaA little shy and sad of eyeBut very wise was heAnd then one day, a magic dayHe passed my way, and while we spokeOf many things, fools and kingsThis he said to me“The greatest thing you’ll ever learnIs just to love and be loved in return” © Eden Ahbez

Our President Gwilym Griffi th wishes everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year and thanks everyone who has contributed to our fund raising efforts in 2012. We are supporting many local Charities with our fund raising events. These include the Sir John Eastwood Hospice, the Nottinghamshire & Lincolnshire Air Ambulance and the Cornwater Club. The following events have been held since our last Sherwood article and have raised a over £4,600 in total.Quiz NightWe held a quiz night to raise funds for all of our local Charities we are supporting this year. With nearly 100 people attending it was a very entertaining evening with three quiz rounds the winning team is shown here. We raised a grand total of a little over £960.A great big thank you to all those that supported this event. Sleigh: Our Santa Sleigh collection was very popular again this year with even more children wanting to see Santa on his rounds. On one particular round we had so many stops we could not fi nish it before 8.30pm, the time Santa has to go back to Lapland. We raised a little over £3,700 for our local Charities. Thanks to Denis and Elaine Baker on Swinton Rise and all their friends for providing Santa and his helpers with very welcome sausage rolls and mince pies on what was one of the wettest nights we have had on the sleigh for a long time.We would also like to thank everyone that contributed to our collection a truly great effort. Our special thanks to the Inner Wheel Club of Ravenshead and 1st Larch Farm (St. Peter’s) Scouts for their invaluable help as Santa’s helpers.

We will be around with Santa later this year so keep an eye out for our timings and routes in the Sherwood next November.Christmas Party: Our Christmas party this year was enjoyed by 40 Rotarians and their Partners. Our President Gwilym joined in the fun by modelling a new hat. We held a Karaoke that really did prove we will not win any prizes in the Voice!!President Nominee Raj Chandran and Qudsia celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary at the party with a glass of champagne for everyone. Our Club meets every week on a Wednesday at the Horse & Groom in Linby and potential new members are always very welcome. If you would like to know more about Rotary and its aims or just want to come along to what our Club is like then Contact our Secretary, Bob Jackson on 793978.We are looking forward to fun fi lled 2013 with lots more fund raising and helping out those in need in our communities.C/O Paul Craddock, Rotary Club of Ravenshead and Blidworth.

FAREWELL TO KEN WATERFIELDMembers of the Farnsfi eld & District Branch of the Royal British Legion joined friends and relatives at the Sherwood Forest Cremation at Ollerton just before Christmas to say farewell to Kenneth Waterfi eld (82) of Abbott Crescent, Farnsfi eld, a long standing member of the branch and a previous standard bearer. The service was conducted by Rev Peter Graves, who told the mourners that Ken was born at Sutton in Ashfi eld, the youngest of three children. He worked at Silverhilland Bentinck Collieries and, in his spare time, played drums in the local dance band and taught dancing, especially jitterbugging and jiving. In 1950 Ken was called up for National Service and then signed on for two more years as a regular soldier in the Royal Signals as a dispatch rider. He was particularly proud to have been a member of the Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team. When he was demobbed in 1954, he returned to Nott’s, living in Bilsthorpe and working as a lorry driver and then as under-manager for John Eastwood. He mar-ried his wife Val in 1967 and fi nally retired in 1995 when he took on a number of part time jobs, including a community project where he helped young offenders to come to terms with the challenges of life and to build their self-respect.

Royal British Legion ConferenceNottinghamshire Royal British Legion held its Annual Conference at Bilsthorpe recently and one of the items on the agenda was a motion from Farnsfi eld and District Branch. Nigel Caldicott, the former chairman of the branch, who now lives in Worcestershire, travelled back to Bilsthorpe to explain the proposal which concerned the large number of people and organisations that makeregular voluntary donations to the Legion, but are not actually members of the organisation. It is estimated that some 700,000 people fall into this category , a fi gure which considerably exceeds the current membership. If these people were to become members, the overall ability of the Legion to carry out its work will be enhanced by virtue of a larger pool of potential activists available to promote and engage with the Legion’s aims and objectives. The motion was carried by the meeting and will now be considered for inclusion on the agenda of the National Conference, to be held at Llandudno in May. It is understood that this is the fi rst time that Farnsfi eld has placed a motion on the conference agenda and members await the result with great interestc/o Trevor Wilds

Ravenshead Inner Wheel ReportFirstly “Happy New Year” to everyone! In November we were invited by the Scouts to have a table at their Christmas Extravaganza! President Sue Evans and a few members ran the stall; they had jams, chutneys, cakes, cards and a bran tub for the children. A very successful event, and raised £200. In December, District Chair-man Ann Cottee organised a Carol Service at St. Peters church in Ravenshead. This was a great success! The District Choir were excellent and the service flowed without a hitch. Afterwards we had organised refresh-ments in the church hall. We are a great team! Well done “Team Ravenshead”! A “Big Thank You” to all Joy Richardson’s ladies who have knitted all the squares for Baby Blankets, Hats, Bootees and Mittens, Cardigans and Toys. Also thank you to everyone who donates the basic necessities for babies, children, women and men. All these go into making up our baby layettes with all the necessary items a new baby would need as soon as they are born. Last week Joy kindly opened up her home for all our club members to help put together the Layettes, Joy Bags for women, School Kits with pencil cases filled with pens, pencils, crayons , rubber, ruler and exercise books. Roy bags for men. Bandages made up from old sheets. This is our Inner Wheel Day we hold every January, col-lecting items throughout the year and buying any extras we might need to make all of the above. We distribute these anywhere to people in crisis. Our next meeting is at the beginning of February where we have

a visit from our District Chairman Ann Cottee. Best behaviour girls! We will also be planning various events for District, a Quiz night in February, our yearly Rally and Inner Wheel Association Conference, held this year in Plymouth. This is where Raven-shead Club Members are the host club to our District Clubs who will be visiting Plymouth. Also our club members are there to help support President Sue’s chosen charities for the rest of her year. Another busy year to look forward too! Susie Parry- Williams, Club Correspondent

Rags—Don’t Bin them –Bring Them!

Do you have old and worn clothes, bedding and tablecloths that are no use to you any more but you don’t know what to do with them—then bring them to Blidworth Miners Welfare on 9th February. Over the last year the Cornwater Club Charity Shop has recycled 10,000 kgs of rags, as part of its rags campaign. We are now bringing this campaign to Blidworth. As part of our Stock the Shop day to be held at Blidworth Miners Welfare on Saturday 9th February we are inviting residents to drop off their rags at the Welfare. Please bring all rags in a bag or box, clearly marked ‘rags’. The rags are weighed and sent to a company specialising in handling and converting rags. They are recycled and used to make useful products such as industrial cloths, packaging and fillings. As a charity we are paid for these rags thus generating money for the old people who attend the Cornwater Club. In contrast, rags which are thrown in the bin end up in landfill sites creating greenhouse gases that result in climate change.

If you are able to help please bring your rags to the Function Room, Blidworth Miners Welfare, Mansfield Road, Blidworth on Saturday 9th February between 10 am and 3 pm.

We are also accepting any saleable goods for the shop, including clothing, shoes, household items and small electrical goods with a plug.

Church ArticleSending cards on St Valentine’s Day (Feb 14th) is just one of the ways in which we choose to express our love for someone. You might be one of those people for whom receiving a card is the best way anyone could express their love for you, or, perhaps, cards don’t do it for you - whereas, a kind word, a loving action, a carefully chosen gift, a bunch of roses, your favourite meal cooked for you, or time spent together with someone you love may well be the far more important expressions of love for you.

Whatever it is that touches your heart best of all, it’s only going to do that when a loved one takes the time and trouble to express their love in a way that you truly value. Finding out what is the top expression of love that works for someone we love, is worth the time and effort we invest in it.

Bill and Elsie had been married for 50 years. On their Golden Wedding Anniversary, Elsie asked Bill, “Why don’t you tell me that you love me any more?” To which Bill replied, “Elsie,

when we were married 50 years ago, I told you that I loved you - if I ever change my mind, I’ll let you know!”

OK! so it’s only a story - but it illustrates the importance of fi nding an expression for the love we hold in our hearts.

As we move towards Easter and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ - take a moment to consider what must rank as the greatest expression of God’s love for you and for me. “Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

This is no vain statement, but one which Jesus was to express through his death on the Cross - not for his own sake - but for ours, that we might fi nd forgiveness and reconciliation with God as we put our trust in his Son, Jesus Christ.
