Letter to the editor:
The Illusion that is the Dougherty Campaign. The outside of Livingston County political consulting firm
that the Dougherty Campaign retained should open a show in Vegas. They have taken a good Deputy Sheriff
Investigator with 7 years’ experience in police work and transformed him into a potential Sheriff. How? Well it
started with all of the signs, billboards and posters from day one. Get your face and name out there as much as
you can. If you can appear to have superior support, you can say that you do. Next, use the buzz phrases, ”Take
the High Road!” and “Positive Change” to manufacture the illusion there needs to be change and they are doing it
without dirty political tactics. Add a popular Sergeant to run as a “team” Then add in numerous “endorsements”
which appear to be from large groups to embellish the appearance of support. Finally, add in big money from
special interests and you have the Dougherty Campaign. The consulting firm felt that this would have blown the
Szczesniak campaign out of the water at the Primary. 160 votes were all that separated the two, statistically a
dead heat. The Bean clan would account for those 160 votes, so the consulting firm was wrong! They do not know
what Livingston County wants or needs in their next Sheriff. We the people of Livingston County do!
What concerns me in this race is the deception and out right violations of law that have been occurring
throughout the race and specifically since the Primary. Apparently the “High Road” was too hard stay on. Mr.
Dougherty has gone from 7 years’ experience in law enforcement, to as his recent letter to voters stated, 9 years’
experience. Mr. Dougherty continues to state that he is Sergeant. He is not. He shares the same rate of pay as a
Sergeant but he is not nor has he ever been a Sergeant. Mr. Dougherty and/or members of his campaign have
called members of the Republican committee and threatened to have them removed from the committee if they
did not publically support him. Mr. Dougherty and/or his campaign team have called and threatened other
Republican candidates. They advised that if they did not publically support Dougherty, they would make sure they
were not supported in their election races. Persons representing the Dougherty campaign have threatened local
businesses that were supporting Jim Szczesniak. The Dougherty campaign has suborned sitting Judges by having
them publically support his campaign. Judges are prohibited from supporting candidates in elections. Mr.
Dougherty has supported and encouraged rule and regulations violations by members of the Sheriff’s Off ice in
support of his campaign. The Livingston County Democrat Party chose to not support either candidate, now the
Dougherty campaign is handing out Democrats for Dougherty signs without the Parties permission. Another part
of the Illusion! The Dougherty campaign continues to complain about mudslinging and dirty politics when they are
the ones that are conducting these activities. If this is how he conducts his “transparent” and “High Road”
campaign, what will occur if he were to be elected as Sheriff?
This election is about the best person to lead the Sheriff’s Office into the future, not the best “team”. Jim
Szczesniak is that person. It is not about party politics. The republican party of Livingston County abdicated their
responsibility when they did not designate a candidate for this race. They said that they would leave it up to the
voters. Well, Jim Szczesniak, won 10 out of the 17 towns in the primary. Now they want republicans to join
together and support Dougherty?!?! This election is about the person to lead the Sheriff’s office, not the party.
Jim Szczesniak is the only candidate in this race that has the combination of education, training, dedication,
experience, integrity and morals to be the 50 th Sheriff of Livingston County! Please join me and cast your vote for
Jim Szczesniak on November 5th
. Vote Row C!
Respectfully,
Ronald L. Huff Jr.,
Retired Major Livingston County Sheriff’s Office
