Wayne Memorial’s 7th Annual Midwifery Mingle October 6“Midwifery: Birthing Natu-

rally” is the theme for Wayne Memorial’s Annual Midwife-ry Mingle and High Tea slated for Thursday, October 6, from 2 pm to 4 pm at The Cooper-age, 1030 Main Street, Hones-dale.

The annual gathering, held in celebration of National Midwifery Week, is hosted by Certified Nurse Midwives Pa-tricia Konzman, Sheela Porter-Smith and Amy DeSorgher of Wayne Memorial Commu-nity Health Centers’ Women’s Health Center. The event is cosponsored by Wayne Me-morial Hospital’s New Begin-nings Birthing Suites.

“The theme isn’t just about the birthing process itself. Al-though a natural birth may be the goal, everyone has a differ-ent story of what leads them to the birth they have,” stated Konzman. “We also encour-age concepts after delivery such as skin-to-skin contact by mother and baby.”

Echoing the same senti-ments, Amy DeSorgher adds, “We want to bring emphasis to some of the ways we support natural birth as well as the awesome resources available in the community for natural pregnancy and parenting.”

The event, complete with re-freshments catered by Willow

River Gallery and Café, vendor booths, educational displays and activities for the children, is free for women of all ages. Attendance has exceeded 100 for the past two years. Spon-sorship opportunities are still being accepted. Merchants interested in becoming a spon-sor and/or wishing to display their products at the Mingle are asked to call 570-253-8390 as soon as possible.

“The Mingle is always an enjoyable afternoon.” stated Porter-Smith. “Moms and kids alike enjoy the fun, re-laxed atmosphere. We hope to see many of our midwifery clients and meet women who are interested in learning more about midwifery.”

Midwifery services includ-ing prenatal care, childbirth (including water births), gyne-cological exams, family plan-ning and menopausal counsel-ing are all provided by Wayne Memorial’s certified nurse midwives. All births have 24-hour physician back up. No home births are facilitated.
