Editorrsquos Note In keeping with theBicentennial spirit flooding the state thissummer the Hamilton County Reporter ispublishing a story on the history of theNoblesville Boys Club written by ChuckGodby in the Noblesville Daily LedgerrsquosSept 29 100th anniversary edition

First of 2 PartsThe Noblesville Boys Club was an

immediate hit with city youngsters when itopened its doors for the first tie on MondayApril 13 1953 That day was the beginningof National Boys Club Week all over thecountry

Frank W Campbellrsquos dream for a BoysClub in Noblesville began to come true in

1947 when the first contact was made withBoys Club of America The planning stagetook several years as no suitable club roomscould be found in Noblesville

In 1951 however local interest in aBoys Club began to stir again with thepossibility of obtaining an ideal location ata minimum cost Two representatives fromthe Boys Clubs of America visitedNoblesville and determined that the lodgerooms of the K of P Lodge located at 848frac12Logan Street were ideal for the size andscope of the program which the city couldafford The sale price was set at $6500

Mayor Herman Lawson headed acommittee in charge of the selection of aBoys Club site and upon his committeersquos

recommendation an option was finally takento purchase the K of P Lodge Hall in the fallof 1951

To hold this option the Junior Chamberof Commerce made the first donation of$500 and thereafter the Kiwanis Club andLions Club each gave $300

In October of 1952 work began on thenew Boys Club headquarters in NoblesvilleRobert Morris the first executive directorof the newly formed boys organization and37 other volunteers unloaded two truckloads of lumber and various other suppliesto the third story headquarters and a weeklater Earl Ward a local contractor begancarpentry work

Only a few months earlier Boys Clubofficers were elected at the first officialmeeting of the 15-man board of directorsOfficers elected under the club chartergranted by the State of Indiana wereCampbell president Dale V Swanson firstvice-president Rev Herschel Reed secondvice-president BF McLaughlin treasurerand Irving Heath secretary Heath Swansonand Reed were members of the NoblesvilleBoys Club organizing committee

Not long after her Dads death shewas in New York meeting with thepowers that be at Simon and SchusterShe just kept thinkingif only my Dadwere here She knew he would be pop-ping buttons of pride

After her meeting Karen along withher daughter and son-in-law venturedover to High Line Park at the suggestionof the doorman

As they were taking a selfie to showthe three of them and the skyline of NewYork City a couple approached the trioand the man asked if he could take apicture for them Karen handed him herphone

Three major road projects will begin over the next couple ofweeks in Carmel as part of the cityrsquos CARMEL LINK 20

The projects are as follows

1 3rd Avenue SW being closed for storm water improvementsConstruction to start on or after Tuesday

The City of Carmel will begin construction of storm waterimprovements in the Emerson Road area A sanitary sewer will berelocated in this area to allow a storm water line to move to theMonon trail from Emerson Road towards 3rd Avenue SW Thiswill result in the closure of 3rd Avenue SW starting on or afterTuesday July 26 2016 The duration of the closure of 3rd Avenue

SW from the north side of and including 2rd Street SW to the northside of Industrial Drive will last for approximately two weeks

Detour Route Utilizing Main Street Range Line Road CityCenter Drive and Guilford Road

2 126th Street Improvements between Range Line Road andKeystone AvenueConstruction to start on or after Monday August 1 2016

The next day she was on the Today show and told the story The Today show calledRod Stewart He confirmed their meeting He had no idea she was a New York Times bestselling author

Later Rod Stewart contacted Karen to let her know that he was reading her booksandthey had touched his heart

Call this a coincidence if you want but you all know me well enough by now that I callthis a God appointment

The creation of the Noblesville Boys Club was funded by money obtained during afinancial drive Crandall headed a committee to organize the drive and his committeeprocured the service of Howard Whitcomb as fund raising chairman

Whitcomb in turn organized his own committee which included William B BoatrightRD Smith Chauncey Craig Heath Neal and Campbell

The fundraising drive actually began in April 1952 and it got off to a splendid startwhen a payroll deduction plan was adopted at the Firestone plant Employee contributionsfrom Firestone totaled nearly $8000 and the company itself donated an additional $5000The Ball Brothers Foundation in Muncie gave the next largest gift and many otherindustries companies and businesses followed suit Nearly $30000 was collected duringthe fundraising campaign

3 Roundabout coming to Carmel Driveand Range Line RoadConstruction to start Monday Aug 15

Relief is coming to one of the mostcongested intersections in Carmel as Cityofficials plan to begin construction of aroundabout at the intersection of CarmelDrive and Range Line Road Thisintersection is currently controlled by trafficsignals

The federally-funded project isscheduled to begin Monday August 152016 with utility relocation work a newroundabout curbs and sidewalks Theintersection of Carmel Drive and RangeLine Road will be closed beginningMonday August 15 2016 untilapproximately Saturday November 192016

Despite the closure access to localbusinesses in the area will remain openthroughout the duration of the project

ldquoI am very excited about this projectRoundabouts have shown to reduce

accidents making it more safe for ourdrivers while also improving traffic flowand reducing fuel consumption and airpollution by cutting down on time spentidling in trafficrdquo said Carmel Mayor JimBrainard ldquoRoad projects are never fun formotorists or business impacted by detoursbut I trust our local residents will supportour local businesses despite the presence ofsome orange cones and barrels Oncecompleted this intersection will functionmuch better for allrdquo

on Keystone Parkway west on Main Streetsouth on Guilford and resume travel weston Carmel Drive Eastbound Carmel Drive

traffic will be routed south on Guilford to116th Street to then continue east

will be routed east on Main Street south onKeystone Parkway and west on 116th Streetback to Range Line Road NorthboundRange Line traffic will be routed east on116th Street north on Keystone Parkwayand west on Main Street back to Range LineRoad

This roundabout project is a City ofCarmel project funded jointly by local andfederal funds and will be bid through theIndiana Department of Transportation

(INDOT) on Wednesday August 102016 The intersection which currentlyhandles about 20000 vehicles per dayqualified for a Congestion Mitigation andAir Quality Grant (CMAQ) which willcontribute $127 million to the overallproject cost The cityrsquos portion of theconstruction cost will be funded through therecent bond issue

Cecil W Vanderwielen aged 87 of Cicero passed away on Friday July 22 2016after many years of declining health He was born on June21 1929 in Lafayette Indiana the youngest son ofCharles and Rebecca (Torrenga) Vanderwielen

Cecil was a 1947 graduate of Lafayette Jeff and was amember of the basketball team He loved sports followingthe Bronchos Boilermakers and Cubs throughout his lifeCecil was a stockholder and employee of Indiana Automa-tion of Noblesville retiring in 1992 but remaining anever-present greeter in the lobby until 2000 He lovedliving on the lake wintering in Florida and following hischildrens careers and endeavors Cecil met and fell in lovewith Phyllis Brooks in 1950 They were married in 1952and celebrated 64 years together

He was preceded in death by his parents brothersJohn amp Chuck and sister Ruth Vanderveen Cecil leaveshis wife children Rick (Nancy) and Judi (Roy) Johnson

of Noblesville and Jim (Cindy) of Clive Iowa six grandchildren and five great-grand-children

Services will be held at 100 pm on Tuesday July 26 2016 at Randall amp RobertsFuneral Center 1685 Westfield Road in Noblesville with visitation from 1100 am to thetime of service Pastor Teri Ditslear will officiate His interment will follow on Wednes-day July 27 at 1130 am at Spring Vale Cemetery in Lafayette

I recently changed my thinking about thetopic I had originallyselected for thisarticle the headlinesin recent weeks andthe upcoming electionrhetoric have forcedmy hand so to speakHow do theseheadlines relate to ourhealth and well-being(my usual topics) canbe summed up in one

word STRESS It is a word familiar tomany of us ndash job stress health issues stressfamily stress traffic stress () and on and onThese are what we would consider ourldquoordinaryrdquo stressors However in recentweeks we have been bombarded withatrocious and horrific acts against innocentcivilians as well as our law enforcementprofessionals With 24-hour news cycleson cable news radio and the internet thesehorrible acts are with us constantly Icertainly do not have the skill or ability toeven guess why these atrocities are takingplace nor why our leaders and those whowish to be our leaders cannot display somelevel of civil discourse

Merriam Webster dictionary gives usone definition of mental stress asldquosomething that causes strong feelings ofworry or anxietyrdquo That worry and anxietycan be linked to causing both physical andemotional issues for many people includingthose who do not routinely watchlistenreadabout these world and national tragedies andoccurrences This stress can lead tosleeplessness poor digestion exhaustionchest pain fatigue overeating (or not eating)and even illness1 Effects of this stress canbe insidious we may not necessarily ldquofeelrdquostressed but be affected by it just the same

Can we choose to turn offturn awayfrom the news and alleviate the resultingstress ndash to a point yes But unless you areplanning to leave in a cave underground youwill be exposed to the news cycle and itseffects However you can limit as much aspossible by not tuning in to the mediareports and the chatter associated with allthose reports You can increase yourexercise get outside (pulling weeds is greatfor stress) and surround yourself with as

much peace as possible Readhellipa bookDrinkhellipa cup of tea Watchhellipa funnymovie Deep breathing can also help youdeal with anxiety One of my favoritepastimes I find works wondershellippet a dog(Possibly a cat as well on their terms ofcourse) My dogs Sweetie and Guy love tobe brushed and petted and they really couldnot care less about candidates or bad newsIf you are a ldquonews junkierdquo perhaps you cantrying limiting your time and incorporatesome of the lifestyle change suggestionsnoted above

A nutritious diet increased exercise andfocus on relaxation can help us deal with thestress but unfortunately we seem to beliving in a world today that few of usunderstand or have experienced in ourlifetimes I hope we can change ourthinking focus on how much we have incommon as human beings and look out foreach other I would like to end my articletoday with heartfelt condolences to our lawenforcement community for their recentlosses and appreciation for their protectionand service

The creation of the Noblesville Boys Club was funded by money obtained during afinancial drive Crandall headed a committee to organize the drive and his committeeprocured the service of Howard Whitcomb as fund raising chairman

Whitcomb in turn organized his own committee which included William B BoatrightRD Smith Chauncey Craig Heath Neal and Campbell

The fundraising drive actually began in April 1952 and it got off to a splendid startwhen a payroll deduction plan was adopted at the Firestone plant Employee contributionsfrom Firestone totaled nearly $8000 and the company itself donated an additional $5000The Ball Brothers Foundation in Muncie gave the next largest gift and many otherindustries companies and businesses followed suit Nearly $30000 was collected duringthe fundraising campaign

3 Roundabout coming to Carmel Driveand Range Line RoadConstruction to start Monday Aug 15

Relief is coming to one of the mostcongested intersections in Carmel as Cityofficials plan to begin construction of aroundabout at the intersection of CarmelDrive and Range Line Road Thisintersection is currently controlled by trafficsignals

The federally-funded project isscheduled to begin Monday August 152016 with utility relocation work a newroundabout curbs and sidewalks Theintersection of Carmel Drive and RangeLine Road will be closed beginningMonday August 15 2016 untilapproximately Saturday November 192016

Despite the closure access to localbusinesses in the area will remain openthroughout the duration of the project

ldquoI am very excited about this projectRoundabouts have shown to reduce

accidents making it more safe for ourdrivers while also improving traffic flowand reducing fuel consumption and airpollution by cutting down on time spentidling in trafficrdquo said Carmel Mayor JimBrainard ldquoRoad projects are never fun formotorists or business impacted by detoursbut I trust our local residents will supportour local businesses despite the presence ofsome orange cones and barrels Oncecompleted this intersection will functionmuch better for allrdquo

will be routed east on Main Street south onKeystone Parkway and west on 116th Streetback to Range Line Road NorthboundRange Line traffic will be routed east on116th Street north on Keystone Parkwayand west on Main Street back to Range LineRoad

This roundabout project is a City ofCarmel project funded jointly by local andfederal funds and will be bid through theIndiana Department of Transportation

(INDOT) on Wednesday August 102016 The intersection which currentlyhandles about 20000 vehicles per dayqualified for a Congestion Mitigation andAir Quality Grant (CMAQ) which willcontribute $127 million to the overallproject cost The cityrsquos portion of theconstruction cost will be funded through therecent bond issue
