music for lighthousekeepingMusic for

Lighthousekeeping is a long-overdue tribute to Howard Rumsey and his incredible legacy. No one has done more for the west coast jazz scene and this event is designed to showcase the music and the musicians that Howard was responsible for bringing to the forefront.

For four full days and nights the sounds of West Coast

Jazz past and present will echo through the halls of the Sheraton Gateway in an unprecedented schedule of concerts and events. There will be many concerts featuring original Lighthouse All-Stars music as well as concerts presenting music of famous Lighthouse Alumni. There will also be concerts and events celebrating the original Stan Kenton Orchestra and Howard Rumsey’s Concerts By the Sea.

Howard will be in attendance as our very special Guest of

Honor and I hope you will plan to join us to help give Howard the tribute he deserves.Sincerely,Ken Poston, Festival Director

inter-Collegiate Jazz festivalLong before jazz was included in University

music curriculums, Howard was championing and encouraging young jazz musicians by giving them a spotlight every Easter week at The Lighthouse. The list of musicians that took part in the Easter Week festivities include such luminaries as Les McCann, Mike Wofford, Charlie Shoemake, Charlie Haden, Pete Christlieb, Ray Manzarek, Daryl Dragon, Lanny Morgan, Steve Huffsteter, Pinky Winters, Barry Zweig, Jim Keltner and many more.

Many alumni of the Easter Week festivals will be on hand to participate in the various

concerts as well as specific concerts honoring Howard’s role as a pioneer of Jazz Education.

In celebration of the Easter Week Collegiate festivals we’re having a mini Inter-Collegiate

Festival of our own. Thursday-Saturday we will feature two University groups each day at the pool who will be critiqued by a panel of judges. The winning band will be invited back to perform on a Sunday Night Showcase.

The Lighthouse All-Stars working group recorded for the final time in 1956. Although the group continued on into the 1960s there were several outstanding editions of the All-Stars that were not documented on record. Vince Guaraldi came into the group after Victor Feldman and stayed for several months. Even though he was only in Southern California for a short time his presence had a major impact on the scene.

Pianist Larry Vuckovich was Vince Guaraldi’s only student and played in Vince’s two-piano quintet, Powder Keg. This program will include many Vince Guaraldi classics performed by a stellar group of musicians that includes guitarist Josh Workman, who captures the excitement of Vince’s collaborations with Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete.
