“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not
fear...”
- Psalm 46:1-2
I heard the news of the bomb blasts at the finish line of the Boston marathon just as I sat
down to compose this newsletter article. I was angry, but most of all, I was really sad for
the people who were immediately affected, for the organizers of a great and historical race,
and for the city of Boston.
Moments before, I had been reflecting on a quote from Confucius shared in an interview by
Will Smith: “He who says he can and he who says he can’t are usually both right.”
It seems to me, in light of what’s unfolding in Boston, and especially since we’re still in the
Easter season, that we have a choice to make. We can be “he who can’t,” allowing our-
selves to be overcome by the fear, anger, sadness and despair that accompany acts of terror-
ism. Or, we can be “he who can,” people who believe that when we say “Christ is risen” we
are affirming that God’s power for life, for restoration, and for healing is greater than any
death-dealing power of darkness. And, that we not only rely confidently on God for
strength and help and comfort in times of trouble, we also choose to become part of God’s
light, offering the encouragement, hope and strength we have learned to trust, to others.
I would amend Confucius’ quote to say “He who says he can is not just usually, but is al-
ways, by the grace of God, right.” May we all be part of the healing of the world in the af-
termath of this horrific event.
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

* CUL = Communion Usher Leaders (will recruit members to assist in serving communion.)
“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary donation of
your discretion to the Cluster. If a cash donation to the Cluster is
made, a wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers
are $30.00 and bulletin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculptures are
also gladly accepted.
You can also dedicate a Choir Anthem with a donation of
$30. With ever-increasing costs of choral music, this sponsorship will
help stretch our budget and continue to bring quality music to Shen-
kel. Dedicate your anthem to someone special, an event in your life, or
just to the fact that you love music. Thank you for this needed contri-
bution to Shenkel. Blue envelopes are in the Narthex for your sponsor-
ships.
The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication during this
and the upcoming months. Please complete one of the special flower/
bulletin/anthem envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your pay-
ment, and either put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box
by the office door. You should sign your name on the chart in the
narthex by the appropriate date after you have completed your
envelope.
HOLY
COMMUNION
Shenkel UCC cele-
brates the sacrament of
Holy Communion at
both services on the
first Sunday of each month. Each time com-
munion is served, some of the bread and non-
alcoholic wine that has been consecrated at the
altar will be saved in a traveling communion kit,
ready to go to the homes or hospital rooms of
members who were unable to be present, and
would like to receive the sacrament. Please let
Pastor Bonnie know if you, or someone you
know, would appreciate “distance-communing”
with their Shenkel Church family!

SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM
This is the easiest way to help our church financially. Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at the customer
service spot at your local Redner’s store. Show your card at the register when you check out, then bring
your register tapes to church and deposit them in the box in the Narthex. These tapes are collected rou-
tinely, presented to the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage of your total purchase to the church.
Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a certain
time period. Also, please return the entire register tape. Redner’s will not accept any register receipt that has any part of it
removed.
Keep up the good work and thank you, Redner’s!

SPRING CLEAN UP
Are you tired of sticks and leaves littering the

Would you like for your kids to be so tired out
that they need a nap?

Committee on Saturday, May
18, at 9:00 AM for a spring
work day. We will be focusing
on cutting a new swale at the

clearing off the graves in the cemetery, and adding
backs to some of the pews in the grove. When the
work is complete, there will be a Beef and (Root)
Beer fundraiser in the pavilion. Sandwiches and
sodas will be available for a dollar each and all
proceeds will benefit the Stained Glass Window

LUCAS GRAY’S
CONFIRMATION PROJECT
For my project I am going to create a memory garden in
the grove, right next to the labyrinth. I will be planting per-
ennials in honor of loved ones who have passed, then,
every year, the perennials will bloom symbolizing how
these people are still with us in spirit. Perennials include
Black-Eyed Susan, Shasta Daisies, Purple Coneflowers
and Coreopsis.
To contribute to my project, please complete an order
form, located in the narthex, choose a flower and write
down the name of the loved one who you would like to
have honored. Cost is $10 for each dedication that will
cover the flower and planting materials. Dedications and
payment can be put in the designated box in the narthex.
Orders will be accepted through Sunday, May 12. The
planting of the garden will take place on Saturday, May
18, which corresponds with Shenkel’s Spring Clean Up. I
hope you will consider joining me to help with planting
and remembering all those who have passed. Thanks for
your support! 1

STEWARD’S CORNER
If you were in church on that Sunday that they called Holy Humor Sunday, you would have
thought that it was “April Fool’s” day. The people were so funny! Everyone had a happy time.
I was glad to see that cute little lady they call “Sister Ann.” There she was, sitting near the choir
and wearing that big hat that she could use for wings when she “flies in” from the Vatican!
The choir and director added funny notes too.
Even pastor Bonnie was pretty witty.
There was a song they sang that has this message: “Take time to be funny…for laughter is healing, it’s good for
the soul!”
Silly Steward
Healing prayers are now offered on the third
Sunday of each month at both services.
The Prayer Chain list is continually being updated. Re-
quest for prayers should be placed
in the prayer box in the Narthex, or
get in touch with any member of
the Wholeness Committee.
If anyone has a special prayer re-
quest, please contact Ann Baccari
or Freda Wanner. Prayer requests
will be carried for one month. If anyone is interested in
ministering on the Prayer Chain, please contact Ann
Baccari or Freda Wanner. Members of the Wholeness
Committee are Ann Baccari, Ted Gray, Tootie and
Louise Hine, June Hartung, Carol Stubbe and Freda
Wanner.
You are invited to share in a Celebration for the Life of Sally Holder , Doug’s mother, at Salem Shalter's Lu-theran Church in Fleetwood, PA on Saturday, May 11th. A recital will precede the service at 10 a.m., and the service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Shalter's Church is located at: 2032 Mt. Laurel Road Fleetwood, PA 19522 (Some GPS Systems may require the additional information: Alsace Township)

Laurel Road. If you pass Spayd's Garden Center you went too far. Turn around. The church is located on the left side.

Meet Natalie Sleeth ~ Church Music Composer
When I was interviewed for the position of Church Musician for Shenkel, I learned that the Choir
Members very much enjoyed singing pieces written by Natalie Sleeth. As it turned out, she is one of
my favorite anthem writers, as well. In addition, I was blessed to have her as a personal friend
many years ago.
When I directed a choir in Reading, Natalie soon became one of the favorite choices for both my Junior and Senior
Choirs. One year, the thought came to me to have the choirs sing several of her pieces for our Music Sunday celebra-
tion. At the time, Natalie was presenting church music seminars around the country, and I was hopeful that, per-
haps, she might be visiting in our area and could attend our worship service. Sadly, Natalie was not going to be in
the east at that time. But, she was amazed and honored that a choir would want to sing a service full of her mu-
sic! She wrote me a long letter, and thereupon began a friendly correspondence for many years.
Natalie was married to a United Methodist Pastor, and his work caused them to relocate many times over the years.
At one point, they were living in Evanston, Illinois, where Ron was the President of Garrett Theological Semi-
nary. During a snowy January, I made a visit to our Lutheran Seminary in Chicago. I wrote to Natalie and asked if
she would finally like to meet. She said yes! And so we met at Schraft's, near the famous Marshall Field's Depart-
ment Store. It was a thrill to meet her at last. And she was just as wonderful as she seemed in the many letters and
postcards which she had sent over the years.
Natalie was an alto in her church choir. And, she always thought that the alto parts she sang were "predictable."
Finally, she figured that she would try her hand at writing music for a choir. She wanted to "write something worth
singing (the music), and something worth singing about (the lyrics)." Over the years, she wrote a prolific amount
of works for both church and school choirs. One of her greatest longings was to compose a hymn. Toward the end of
her husband's life, she wrote, "Hymn of Promise (In the Bulb there is a Flower)." Ron died shortly after it was com-
pleted in 1985, and it was later dedicated to him. It is now a part of many hymnals including, The United Methodist
Hymnal, and The New Century Hymnal (#433). Natalie continued her joy of writing music until she entered the
Church Triumphant in 1992.
We hope that works by Natalie, many of which you have already heard through the years, have touched your
souls. And, we pray that the ones you will hear this Music Sunday will continue to fill you with her joy!

"The Musical Month of May!"
Following the Chancel Choir's rousing rendition of three pieces from the movies, "Sister Act," and,
"Sister Act II," for Holy Humor Sunday, we have now focused our energies on the month of
May. May is, traditionally, a busy Music month for many Churches, and Shenkel is no exception!
We begin the month with a special Anthem in honor of the Confirmands on May 5th. On Satur-
day, May 11th, the Chancel Choir will sing at my mother's memorial service in Fleet-
wood. Mother's Day, May 12th, will find the Choir singing a moving piece to honor our mothers and those who have
been like mothers to us along our journey. The Chime Choir will also present a special piece, “Fairest Lord Jesus."
Music Sunday will be celebrated at the 10:45am Service on May 19th! We have waited a long time to share this day
with you. The Youth and Chancel Choirs will present a number of Anthems written by Natalie Sleeth. Natalie was a per-
sonal friend of mine, and I share more about her in another article in this Newsletter. Joining us in celebration of Music
Sunday will be Sue Stultz, Jeff Graeff , Corinne Griffiths, and others! There will be a time of fellowship after the Service
to honor and thank all the musicians for their faithful service to the Church throughout the year. Please feel free to in-
vite your family members and friends to join you for this wonderful day!
Lastly, we will enjoy special music on Trinity Sunday, the 26th of May.
The whole month of May is going to be filled with all kinds of marvelous Music! Come, and let us together, praise God
and Jesus Christ as we give thanks ~ through Music!
Yours in Christ,
Douglas Holder

"Who is that handsome
dude hanging out with
Pastor Bonnie these
days? It's Quest, a year
old Yellow Lab Seeing
Eye puppy that Pastor
Bonnie is "finishing" for a
puppy raising family that
moved away. He'll be
heading back to The See-
ing Eye in a month or two, but you'll be seeing him
around till then!"
