The Shenandoah Valley is located in the heart of the historic and scenicShenandoah Valley of west-central Virginia. The region is comprised of sevencounties (Augusta, Bath, Highland, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, andShenandoah) and five independent cities (Buena Vista, Harrisonburg,Lexington, Staunton, and Waynesboro). This 4,264-square mile region isplentiful in natural resources and has a strong base in tourism, as well asretail, commercial, and industrial development.

Interstates 64 and 81 provide easy access to the Ports of Hampton Roads andthe Virginia Inland Port at Front Royal.

The Shenandoah Valley includes the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland,Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, and Shenandoah Counties and the cities ofBuena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton and Waynesboro.

All counties have a board of supervisors and county administrator. All citieshave a city council and city manager.

All localities have a comprehensive plan and zoning and subdivisionordinances.

There are 20 incorporated towns in the Shenandoah Valley.

The Omni Homestead Resort, located inBath County, has been providingluxurious accommodations topresidents, princes, and sportsenthusiasts since 1766. It offers aconvention center, three championshipgolf courses, ski slopes, tennis courts,riding trails, skeet fields and many otherfacilities to satisfy the recreationaldesires of the entire family.

Taxes

Localities in Virginia collect a 1% sales tax. They do not tax other items taxedat the State level.

Counties and cities in Virginia are separate taxing entities. Therefore, acompany pays taxes to either a county or to a city.

If a company is located in a town, it pays town and county taxes except forutility taxes which are paid only to the town and the license tax which is paidonly to the town unless town law permits the additional collection of a countytax.

Manufacturers pay real estate, machinery and tools, truck and automobile,utility, and sales taxes.

Nonmanufacturers pay real estate, tangible personal property, truck andautomobile, utility, and sales taxes. They also may pay either a merchants'capital or a license tax.

Area residents have access to six hospitals located in the Shenandoah Valley.Bath Community Hospital and Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital with a totalof 70 beds, serve the southern portion of the region. Augusta Health with 255beds and Sentara RMH Medical Center with 238 are strategically located inthe center of the region, and Page Memorial Hospital and ShenandoahMemorial Hospital, with a total of 50 beds are located in the northern portion ofShenandoah Valley. Sentara RMH offers a Regional Cancer Center, Heart andVascular Center, Wellness Center, Center for Corporate Health, and Center forSleep Medicine as well as other services. In addition to these facilities, theresidents are in close proximity to the University of Virginia Medical Center inCharlottesville. The hospital is a world-renowned teaching and research centeroffering the latest in technology, service, and facilities.

Nearly 500 physicians and 150 dentists maintain practices in the ShenandoahValley.

Approximately 800 places of worship are located in the area.

The Shenandoah Valley has four main public libraries with 19 branchescontaining over 938,000 volumes, with an annual circulation of 2,200,000. Inaddition, colleges and universities throughout the area also permit the public touse their library facilities. These facilities include James Madison University,Washington & Lee University, and Virginia Military Institute.

National, state and local parks offerunlimited recreational opportunities forhiking, biking, fishing, canoeing andcamping. The Skyline Drive,Shenandoah National Park and BlueRidge Parkway draw visitors fromaround the world to view the scenicvistas of the Shenandoah Valley.

A variety of shopping opportunities are available to area residents and visitors.Harrisonburg is the retail hub of the Shenandoah Valley with Valley Mall andits 80 stores, two smaller malls, and several big-box shopping centers.Waynesboro's new Waynesboro Town Center is a a growing big-box retailcenter. The individual towns and cities throughout the Valley offer uniquespecialty shops, dining and services, as well as art and antique shops.

Numerous cultural and recreational opportunities are available in theShenandoah Valley. The Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, BlueRidge Parkway, George Washington National Forest, Jefferson NationalForest, Grand Caverns Regional Park, and Natural Chimneys Regional Parkoffer scenic views, hiking, skiing, picnicking, camping, swimming, fishing, andother outdoor activities for residents as well as visitors.

Three limestone caverns, Luray, Endless, and Shenandoah, are located in theregion. These underground wonderlands have mysterious passageways withamazing rock formations and streams that are enjoyed by area residents andtourists alike.

The Shenandoah Valley is home to numerous resorts offering a full range ofactivities. The world renowned resort, The Omni Homestead Resort in HotSprings offers a variety of activities including golf, tennis, skiing, horsebackriding, and skeet shooting. Because of its excellent facilities, the resort hostsstate and national golf tournaments, tennis matches, and bowling tournaments.Massanutten Resort is a four-season resort that includes golf, tennis, spacomplex, stable, indoor waterpark, and ski facilities. Bryce Mountain Resortoffers year-round snow and grass skiing, an 18-hole golf course, tennis,horseback riding, boating, lodging, and dining.

A total of 22 golf courses are located in the region. Six are private and 12 arepublic, and six are 9-hole courses and 12 are 18-hole courses.

Cultural and historical attractions include the Shenandoah Valley Art Center,the Museum of American Frontier Culture, Woodrow Wilson's Birthplace,Natural Bridge and the George C. Marshall Museum. Civil War buffs canretrace Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign and explore the New MarketBattlefield. This park covers 160 acres on the Shenandoah River and houses amuseum that spans the entire war. Each spring the Battle of New Market isreenacted. The Washington and Lee University Lenfest Center for the Artspresents 250 theatrical productions throughout the year. The area’s othercolleges and universities sponsor lectures, concerts, art exhibits, andnumerous athletic events.

From rural to urban, the ShenandoahValley can accommodate any life style.The Valley's rich history is kept alive inliving museums and libraries. Thecolleges and universities add to thecultural diversity of the region. Vibranttown centers, unique to eachcommunity, are a focal point forcommerce and social activity featuringfine arts and crafts, music, festivals,performing arts and unique shops andrestaurants.

Several festivals and celebrations are held in the Shenandoah Valley featuringfood, music, folk-arts, and crafts. The Virginia Fall Foliage Festival, held eachOctober in Waynesboro, exhibits the work of approximately 150 artists fromacross the nation and Canada, as well as music, food and dancing. TheHighlands Maple Festival is an annual spring event in Highland County thatattracts 70,000. The event celebrates the opening of the trees and the processof making maple syrup.

A four-season climate means year-roundoutdoor recreational activities fromskiing at Massanutten and Wintergreenresorts to golfing at the world-renownedOmni Homestead Resort or one of themany championship golf courses in theregion.
