MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am pleased to report that 2017 was a very good year for Shenandoah Community Foundation. With the creation of eight new funds, generous contributions and robust investment returns, we now have 67 operational funds in our portfolio, and our total assets at year end were $3.9 million, a 21.5% increase from the prior year.

During the year, we awarded $49,000 to community non-profits through our competitive grant application process, $80,000 in scholarships to county high school graduates, and $18,000 in additional scholarships and grants to other agencies through donor advised and other funds. Our non-profit awards benefit all segments of our community, from health services, domestic violence and homelessness prevention, education, animal welfare, the arts and culture, and environment.

We want to thank the many donors who have chosen Shenandoah Community Foundation as their philanthropic partner. By establishing endowed funds, donors have gained the satisfaction that their gifts will benefit our area for generations to come and their generosity will be remembered well into the future.

During 2017, our Foundation lost a good friend and founding board member, Dr. Jacob Haun, Jr. Jake dedicated 19 years of service to the Foundation, generously sharing his time, energy, and financial resources with the Shenandoah County community. We are both humbled and inspired by this exemplary leader and will miss him deeply. We have included a remembrance of Jake within this annual report.

We also express our sincere appreciation and thanks to Jeff Dalke for having served so ably as President of the Foundation for the past seven years. We continue to benefit from Jeff’s expertise, leadership, and involvement as he continues to serve on the board and as our Treasurer.

As you review this annual report, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or comments you have. We are ready, willing, and able to work with you, fulfilling our mission of connecting people who care with causes that matter.

THE POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Our donors are best described as generous and caring. They have contributed to existing funds within the Foundation or established their own funds to ensure that the charitable works that matter to them will be supported now and in the future.

Perhaps you want to honor a loved one or support a specific charitable cause. Gifts of cash, appreciated securities, or other assets can be donated during your life or through your estate. If you choose to create a new charitable fund within the Shenandoah Community Foundation, you may elect to stay personally involved in the good works your gift makes possible while we handle the administrative details.

MAKING A DIFFERENCEA TRIBUTE TO JAKE HAUN

The Shenandoah Community Foundation has lost one of its shining stars. Dr. Jacob “Jake” Haun, Jr., 85, died at his home near Woodstock, Virginia, on September 22, 2017.

Jake generously—and often anonymously—supported individuals and organizations in need as well as causes ranging from poverty and environment to social justice. His commitment to making a lasting difference in the world is clearly demonstrated in his work as a founding board member of the Shenandoah Community Foundation, on whose board he served with energy and dedication until the end of his life. He was among the Foundation’s staunchest allies.

With his many and varied interests, Jake lived an impressively full, interesting, and wholehearted life. He had the unique ability to inspire others through the sheer force of his belief and his persistent drive. The greatest tribute Jake would have us pay him is to emulate those values of caring, generosity, and problem-solving.

All of us who have worked with Jake as part of this Shenandoah Community Foundation family want to express our deepest sympathy to his wife Diane and to his children, grandchildren, and extended family. We will miss him greatly.
