BoysKiel

2010-11 record: 20-4, 12-2EWC (second)

Coach: Jamie Arenz, 10th year(102-100)

Returning letter winners: NicHammann, 6-0 sr.; David Ess-wein, 5-10 sr.; Brad Jaeger, 6-1sr.; Tyler Konz, 6-0 sr.; JaysonKohlman, 6-1 sr.

Other prospects: Cole Voelker,5-10, jr.; Jordan Meyer, 6-2 jr.;Seth Woods, 6-4 jr.; NathanPieper, 5-9 jr.; Calvin Winkel, 6-0jr.; Jacob Winkel, 6-4 so.

Outlook: Fewer teams will haveto replace as much talent as theRaiders, especially All-EWCstandout Joey Burris. Esswein av-eraged 3 ppg and is the top re-turning scorer. But Kiel has sizedown low and a senior-ladenperimeter that is high on athleti-cism, and could surprise thoseteams not ready for the Raiders.

New Holstein2010-11 record: 8-13, 4-10

EWC (eighth)Coach: Ken Stephany, sixth

year (52-74)Returning letter winners: Sam

Cash, sr.; Ross Klapperich, sr.;Jared Schmitz, sr.; Bill Jones, sr.;Chris Greuel, sr.

Other prospects: Joel Feider,sr.; Taylor Zimmermann, sr.; AustinDewhurst, sr.

Outlook: Cash averaged 16ppg last season, the third-mostamong all returning area players.

Plymouth2010-11 record: 14-10, 7-7

EWC (third)Coach: Jason Duff, second

year (14-10)Returning letter winners:

Parker Kastelic, 5-9 sr.; Brady Pe-terson, 6-3 sr.; Kollin Neils, 6-2so.; Cory Unger, 5-10 jr.; BrettErdmann, 6-0 sr.; Devin Gumm, 5-10 sr.

Otherprospects: Jor-dan Mueller, 6-4jr.; Owen Henrik-sen, 6-2 jr.; KevinFriederichs, 6-5jr.; Matt Rhude,5-10 jr.; KyleLisowe, 6-2 jr.

Outlook: ThePanthers haveto replace four starters, but thereis talent in the backcourt, led byKastelic (5.3 ppg, 2.1 ppg, 2.7apg), Neils (6.4 ppg) and Unger(4.1 ppg). There’s also size com-ing up from last year’s JV teamthat went 19-3. If those playerscan develop quickly and hold theirown in the paint, the guards cando the rest and the Panthers can

again be a top-three EWC squad.

Sheboygan Falls2010-11 record: 15-11, 5-9

EWC (T-fourth)Coach: Eric Spielman, fifth year

(56-40)Returning letter winners:

Zach VanEngen, 6-0 sr.; BobbyMusil, 5-5 sr.; Aaron Krueger, 5-9sr.; Cole Heili, 6-3 sr.; Ryan Krist,6-0 sr.; JoeLorenz, 6-6 sr.;Alex Wagner, 6-1sr.; Jacob Ten-pas, 6-2 jr.

Otherprospects: JakeHucke, 5-10 jr.;Connor Clark,6-1 jr.; RileySchueffner, 6-0 jr.; Sean McKin-ster, 5-10 jr.; Tyler Testroete, 6-4jr.; Max Hilbert, 6-2 jr.; RyanHalverson, 5-11 jr.; Matt Wilke, 5-11 so.

Outlook: The Falcons returnthree of their top four scorers froma sectional final team in VanEn-gen (11 ppg, 3.5 rpg), Musil (8.9ppg) and Krueger (7.1 ppg).VanEngen and Heili missed majortime last year due to injuries, butthe Falcons won 7 of 8 when theyreturned. While the depth is a rel-ative unknown, the Falcons couldmake another run in the EWC andplayoffs with better health plussenior leadership.

Cedar Grove-Belgium

2010-11 record: 12-12, 10-8CLC (fifth)

Coach: Jim Meinen, 16th year(148-181)

Returning letter winners:Luke Kaat, 6-1 sr.; TJ Obbink, 5-10 sr.; Jon Herzog, 6-4 sr.; KyleKirst, 6-2 sr.; Josh Ruppel, 6-3sr.; Kyle Green, 6-0 sr.; BryceKnaub, 6-1 sr.; Grayson Pieffer,6-2 jr.

Other prospects: Conner No-vack, 6-2 sr.; Spencer Bares, 6-1so.; Adam Chier, 6-2 so.; RJLemmerman, 6-7 so.; Logan Pe-terson, 5-9 so.; Jarret Jentges, 6-3 jr.; Brent Broctrup, 6-0 jr.

Outlook: The Rockets willmiss the production of graduatedguard Weston Meinen, but theydo get back just about everyoneelse, including honorable men-tion All-CLC forward Herzog (11ppg, 9 rpg). Around the perime-ter, Ruppel (11 ppg, 5 rpg), Ob-bink (7 ppg, 3 rpg) and Kirst (7ppg, 4 rpg) offer several optionsfor coach Meinen. If CGB canconsistently hold its own in thepaint, it could be in the mix foranother upper-half CLC finish.

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah

2010-11 record: 8-17, 5-13CLC (eighth)

Coach: Jeremy Harrison,eighth year (34-121)

Returning letter winners:Josh Schneider, 6-3 sr.; TaylorKaboord, 5-10 jr.; Justin Schnei-der, 6-4 sr.

Other prospects: CaseyDittmann, 6-1 sr.; Blake Loucks,5-9 sr.; Tom Pritzl, 6-2 sr.; OllieSadiq, 5-11 jr.

Outlook: The Resorters havedecent size and experience, per-haps making them the sleeper ofthe CLC. Loucks, a mid-seasontransfer from Two Rivers lastyear, averaged 11.3 ppg duringhis stint, while the Schneiderscombined for 14.6 ppg and Kabo-ord averaged 10 ppg.

Howards Grove2010-11 record: 14-10, 12-6

CLC (fourth)Coach: Mark Christenson,

second year at Howards (14-10,438-251 overall)

Returning letter winners:Ashton Holzman, 6-5 sr.; MikeDavis, 6-1 sr.; Davis Nennig, 6-4jr.; Ryan Bruesewitz, 5-10 sr.;Thomas Brickner, 6-1 sr.; NoahSteines, 6-1 sr.; Jordan Hemb, 6-5 sr.

Outlook: Two starters will beback for the Tigers, including the6-5 Holzman (9.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg),

a second-team All-CLC forward, and Davis (8.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg). Butthe Tigers will miss the physicalNennig (5.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg), outfor the year with a torn ACL.With some size up front, andgood shooting coming up theranks, Howards should again bea tough opponent in the CLC.

Kohler2010-11 record: 5-18, 3-15

CLC (ninth)Coach: Ken Roeder, fourth

year (25-62)Returning letter winners:

Alex Romanoski, 5-8 sr.; RyanZittel, 6-3 sr.; John Benishek, 6-3sr.; Michael Krueger, 6-1 sr.

Other prospects: DominicBocchini, 5-7 fr.; Garrett Gris-wold, 5-6 sr.; Connor Hogan, 6-2jr.; Eric Mehoke, 5-9 sr.; BrettMueller, 6-0 so.; James Misfeldt,6-1 jr.; Greg Suralik, 6-5 jr.; TylerLewis, 6-3 jr.; Alex VanderSchaaf,6-3 sr.

Outlook: The Blue Bomberslost most of the close games theywere in last year, but hope to turnit around with four returningstarters and new players from aJV team that finished 16-6. Zittel(10 ppg, 10 rpg) could be theleader Kohler needs in thoseclose games this time around.

Oostburg2010-11 record: 26-1, 18-0

CLC (first)Coach: Kevin Bruggink, 22nd

year, 14th at Oostburg (264-85)Returning letter winners:

Alex Stecker, 5-8 sr.; Carter Zie-mann, 6-1 sr.; Tyler Hartmann, 6-1 jr.; Brad Prinsen, 6-1 sr.; JosiahVerVelde, 6-9 jr.; Derrick Boldt, 6-2 sr.

Otherprospects:Kortu Josiah,6-0 jr.; AaronMcKinster, 6-0jr.; ParkerGabrielse, 6-2so.; PatrickMauer, 6-1 jr.;Ben Flipse, 6-3 jr.; AndrewTelschow, 6-2so.; Jake Hurl-butt, 6-3 so.

Outlook:The FlyingDutchmenhave a lot toreplace fromlast year’sstate-boundsquad, butthey do havereturning first-team All-CLC guard Stecker andsecond-team standout Prinsen.Oostburg will be athletic aroundthe perimeter, and the play fromthe guards will lead the team inits quest for another conferencetitle.VerVelde showed promiselast season and provides insideheight.

Ozaukee2010-11 record: 19-6, 14-4

CLC (second)Coach: Isaiah Ketterhagen,

ninth year (71-104)Returning letter winners:

Patrick Kroen-ing, 6-2 sr.; EricHartnett, 6-6sr.; StephenStreet, 6-6 jr.;Doug Grimm,5-9 sr.; JustinSt. Peter, 6-2sr.; Nick Dupey,6-0 sr.; ColtonSusen, 5-7 jr.

Otherprospects:Gino Bilot, 6-2sr.; AlexDieringer, 6-1jr.; Tyler Bares,6-0 jr.; AndyRichter, 6-2 so.,Owen Miller,5-10 fr.

Outlook:The Warriorshave as much production back asanyone, led by second-team All-CLC returnee Kroening (12.4ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.3 bpg)and two tall post players in sec-ond-teamer Hartnett (12.1 ppg,8.4 rpg, 2 bpg) and Street (7.5ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.7 spg, 2 bpg). There is decent depth to help fillsome voids, making this seasona very promising one in Fredonia.

Random Lake2010-11 record: 10-13, 8-10

CLC (sixth)Coach: Steve Murphy, fourth

year (20-46 at Random Lake,199-175 over-all)

Returningletter winners:Logan Arm-strong, 6-4 sr.;Austin Fechter,6-6 sr.; JustinLunde, 6-1 sr.;Evan Rathke,6-3 sr.; CodySchuessler, 6-2 sr.; AndrewWachs, 6-2 sr.

Otherprospects:Alex Rathke, 6-4 jr.; Pavel Se-menov, 5-11 jr.;Dylan Sveom,5-11 jr.; AndyFechter, 6-4so.; Aaron Rathke, 6-1 fr.

Outlook: Last year’s 10 winswere the most for a RandomLake squad since the 1999-2000season (11). A strong seniorclass could lead the Rams toeven more success than a yearago. Lunde (11.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg)and Evan Rathke (12.6 ppg, 7.3rpg) were All-CLC players, andthe Fechters, plus Armstrong (5.3ppg, 3.7 rpg), provide Random

Lake with as much size as any-one in the conference.

SheboyganChristian

2010-11 record: 9-15, 7-11CLC (seventh)

Coach: BrettFlipse, 15thyear (207-132)

Returningletter winners:Kyle Calvert, 5-11 sr.; DaevinDeMaster, 5-11sr.; Josh Steck-er, 5-9 so.; SamAndringa, 5-8sr.; JustinLeMahieu, 6-0 sr.; Jamie Otte, 6-0 sr.; Greg Scheidt, 5-11 sr.;Joshua Seider, 5-11 jr.; TomWilke, 6-0 sr.

Other prospects: None listed.Outlook: Just one starter re-

turns from last year’s nine-winsquad in Calvert (8.5 ppg).TheEagles will need big contributionsfrom new players to be a con-tender in the CLC. Size is also aconcern, with nobody listed astaller than 6-feet on the roster.

SheboyganLutheran

2010-11 record: 18-7, 13-5CLC (third)

Coach: Todd Dekker, 17th year(210-153)

Returning letter winners:Sam Dekker, 6-8 sr.; Nick Re-deker, 6-4 sr.;Josh Wheeler,6-3 sr.; CodyFintelman, 6-1sr.

Otherprospects: MattGumm, 5-10sr.; Ben Leib-ham, 6-4 jr.;Tyler Zastrow, 5-10 so.; PhilLeibham, 6-2so.; Jeff Hess,5-11 so., JakeJurss, 5-11 fr.

Outlook:Lutheran hasjust two return-ing starters.Fortunately, one of them is Dekker (28.8 ppg,10.5 rpg), the state’s top-rankedplayer. Including Dekker, the Cru-saders will have some nice sizedown low, and open spots will befilled from last year’s JV teamthat went 17-4.This is the seasonfor the Crusaders to make somenoise, not just in the CLC, but inthe WIAA Division 5 playoffs. Butit will take some production froma strong sophomore class tomake it happen.

Cedar Grove-Belgium

2010-11 record: 17-7, 13-5CLC (third)

Coach: Josh Ketterhagen,13th year (143-119)

Returning letter winners:Alyssa Sauer, 5-5 jr.; AlyssaSchmitt, 5-6 jr.; Ashley Weavers,5-8 jr.; Danielle DeHaai, 5-7 sr.;Michelle Brisbin, 5-8 sr.

Other prospects: Alex Buech-ler, 5-6 jr.; Ashli von Heimburg, 5-6 fr.; Brooke Koepsell, 5-4 jr.;Steph Dahlke, 5-8 jr.; BrianaWeyker, 5-4 jr.

Outlook: Expect the same in-tensity on the defensive end thatthe Rockets have been known forunder Ketterhagen. This season, however, CGB must contend withrelative inexperience and a lackof size down low. But the Rocketswill be quick, led by Sauer (6.2ppg, 2.2 rpg) and Schmitt (3.5ppg, 2.6 rpg).

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah

2010-11 record: 17-9, 12-6CLC (fourth)

Coach: Don Kulow, 19th year(226-191)

Returning letter winners:Maddie Landgraf, 5-5 sr.; RachelKnowles, 5-7 sr.; Morgan Voigt-lander, 5-2 sr.; Rachael Lallen-sack, 5-6 sr.

Other prospects: EmilyGrunewald, 5-2 jr.; MikaylaScholten, 5-9 jr.; Charity Ro-driguez, 5-4 jr.; Emma Gross, 5-9jr.; Ashley Pfeifer, 5-3 so.; KellyTheel, 5-3 so.; Izzy Sadiq, 5-7so.; Aryanna Klemme, 5-4 so.

Outlook: Elkhart will again runup and down in an effort to utilizeits superior speed and offset thelack of size (nobody taller than 5-foot-9). Landgraf (10 ppg, 3 spg,2 apg) is a returning first-teamAll-CLC standout, while Knowles(5.1 ppg, 3 rpg) and Voigtlander(4.3 ppg) help provide a solidfoundation to work with. If the Re-sorters can hold their own in thepaint defensively, they could com-pete for another upper-half CLCfinish.

Howards Grove2010-11 record: 19-6, 15-3

CLC (second)Coach: Heidi Georgeff, fifth

year (75-19)Returning letter winners:

Tatum Brickn-er, 5-9 sr.;AlexiaDeRuyter, 5-8sr.; Karlie Fer-manich, 5-6sr.; KaryssaGallenberger,5-7 sr.; AlexisLindstrom, 5-7 sr.; BriannaMorgan, 5-10sr.; Amber Reinemann, 5-6 jr.;

Hayley Rickmeier, 6-0 jr.; JazminStauss, 5-8 sr.

Other prospects: PaytonBramstedt, 5-5 jr.; Jessica Lar-son, 5-4 jr.; Cassie Marver, 5-5 jr.;Brittany Wehrmann, 5-10 jr.

Outlook: Lindstrom, a North-ern Illinois recruit, is back.Thefirst-team All-CLC, Division 4 All-State and reigning SheboyganPress All-Area Player of the Yearaveraged 17.6 ppg last seasonand will be surrounded by loadsof talent for her senior year.Thatincludes Gallenberger, a second-team All-CLC player, and Mor-gan, an honorable mention per-former. Rickmeier provides talent-ed size down low, and last year’s19-2 JV squad will provide someof the best depth in the area.

Kohler2010-11 record: 7-16, 5-13

CLC (eighth)Coach: Terry Jensen, fourth

year (18-50)Returning letter winners:

Christina Lindstrom, 5-7 sr.;Rachel Maggi, 5-9 jr.; Mari-Kath-leen Marzano, 5-9 jr.; Molly Mis-feldt, 5-6 jr.; Alexis Rodriguez, 5-6jr.; Kendall Wolf, 5-8 sr.

Other prospects: None listed.Outlook: The Blue Bombers

will be short in the paint, but theydo return several key playersfrom a year ago in an attempt tocontinue improvement underfourth-year coach Jensen. Whilethe overall record was similar, thedefense improved dramatically, resulting in closer games as theprogram continued its upswing.

Oostburg2010-11 record: 23-4, 18-0

CLC (first)Coach: Lisa Immel, fourth year

(69-13)Returning letter winners:

Allie Paluchniak, 5-10 sr.; LexieGreenheck, 5-10 sr.; Maddy Kaat,6-0 sr.; Emily Hengst, 5-8 sr.;Maggie TenHaken, 5-6 sr.; AbbyVanStelle, 6-1 jr.; MarandaHuibregtse, 5-8 so.; MariaHuibregtse, 5-8 so.

Other prospects: Jocelyn

Stemper, 5-8 jr.; Jo-LeighVerVelde, 5-10 so.

Outlook: The Flying Dutchmenhave the size, talent, leader-ship and expe-rience to makea run at a fifth-consecutiveappearance atState. Palu-nichak wasfirst-team All-CLC, whileMarandaHuibregtse was second-team atpoint guard and Kaat was honor-able mention. Again, Oostburg isa favorite to repeat as CLCchampion, and the depth up anddown the bench adds to the po-tential of a special season.

Ozaukee2010-11 record: 7-16, 6-12

CLC (seventh)Coach: Lee LeMahieu, 30th

year (441-184)Returning letter winners:

Katie Bares, 5-3 jr.; Mickey Burris,5-4 jr.; Emily Thome, 5-7 jr.; LizzieJanke, 5-5 so.; Bailey Johnson, 5-5 so.

Other prospects: KaylaBorowski, 5-4 jr.; Erika Karrels, 5-8 jr.; Katie Lippe, 5-5 jr.; KylieWatry, 5-3 jr.; Kaylee Klapp, 5-5so.; Becca Paulus, 5-8 so.; Jessi-ka Dieringer, 5-5 fr.

Outlook: The rebuildingprocess continues for Ozaukee, which has no seniors on the teamthis season.Thome (4 ppg),Bares (3 ppg) and Burris (3 ppg)will have to increase their offen-sive load, while a promisingsophomore class provides depth.

Random Lake2010-11 record: 11-13, 10-8

CLC (fifth)Coach: Ryan Faris, ninth year

(76-99)Returning letter winners:

Kristie Ernst, 5-8 sr.; Katie Ernst,5-8 sr.; Amber Hubing, 5-7 sr.;Becca Heup, 5-9 sr.; MelissaDrescher, 5-11 sr.; MackenzieWitte, 5-5 sr.; Nicole Paulus, 5-7jr.; Delaney Sinnen, 5-8 so.

Other prospects: MariahSchaver, 5-6 sr.; Jessica Hartwig,5-9 jr.; Becah Hiller, 6-6 jr.; Jessi-ca Mueller, 5-5 so.; MeganSchimberg, 5-3 jr.

Outlook: With loads of experi-ence back from last year’s 10-8CLC squad, theRams shouldagain be in thethick of theupper-half CLCrace. Paulus(7.5 ppg, 3.1rpg) was anhonorablemention All-CLC player, and Kristie (6.7ppg, 4 rpg) and Katie (6.0 ppg,5.7 rpg) Ernst can get it done onthe blocks. Size may be a con-cern, but Random may have thefirepower and balance to makesome noise.

SheboyganChristian

2010-11 record: 2-20, 1-17CLC (T-ninth)

Coach: Sadie Mentink, firstyear

Returning letter winners:Alexis Coulis, 5-4 sr.; DanielleDahlke, 5-5 sr.; Cherith Touw, 5-11 jr.; Catlin Vervelde, 5-5 sr.;Halie Wisse, 5-7 sr.

Other prospects: AlexandriaAbel, 5-10 jr.; Katie Flipse, 5-6 jr.;Vanessa Lorier, 5-4 jr.; DeannaRutkauskas, 5-8 jr.

Outlook: The Eagles look toimprove upon last year’s two-winseason, and five returning play-ers should help in that quest forfirst-year coach Mentink. A largefreshman class has the futurelooking brighter.

SheboyganLutheran

2010-11 record: 12-12, 9-9CLC (sixth)

Coach: JeffJurss, third year(17-28)

Returningletter winners:Lauren VanSeters, 5-10 sr.;Vanessa Gudex,5-8 sr.; JordynJurss, 5-8 sr.;Nicole Beine, 5-5 sr.; Calli Ames, 5-10 sr.; AshleyScheele, 5-8 jr.; Haley Clark, 5-6jr.

Other prospects: Erin Quam,5-8 so.; Danielle Byrum, 5-6 so.

Outlook: Lutheran will haveone of the more experiencedteams in the CLC, with seven re-turning players. That includes All-CLC forward Scheele, andGudex, an honorable mention se-lection.The Crusaders also pos-sess decent size, but aren’t over-ly deep. They’ll rely on quicknessand athleticism in a quest for an-other top-half conference finish.

second year (10-13)Returning

letter winners:Maxine Becker,5-6 sr.; MikaylaPreissner, 5-7sr.; Abby Gils-dorf, 5-7 sr.;Alexis Genke,5-10 sr.; ErinSchuler, 6-0sr.; AshleyMeisner, 5-9 sr.; Corrina Beau-mont, 5-9 jr.; Brittany Meyer, 5-11 sr.; Sami Krupp, 5-9 sr.

Other prospects: None listed.Outlook: The Raiders return

most of their varsity players froma year ago, so expectations haverisen. Preissner is a returningAll-EWC second-teamer, andGenke was honorable mention.

New Holstein2010-11 record: 13-8, 9-5

EWC (fourth)Coach: Nate DePagter and

Tom Hau, second year (13-8)Returning letter winners:

Lauren Voelker, 5-4 sr.; AmandaRose, 5-7 sr.; Naomi Stevenson,5-9 sr.; Tara Zipperer, 5-9 jr.; Tris-ten Guelig, 5-9 jr.; Allieson Mirs-berger, 5-5 jr.; Danielle Brenner,5-6 so.; Karli Fannin, 5-6 so.

Other prospects: TanaBraun, 5-6 jr.; Sarah Winkler, 5-9jr.; Laiken Meyer, 5-6 so.

Outlook: With eight returningplayers, the Huskies should haveas much experience as anyonein the EWC. But height is a con-cern, with nobody taller than 5-foot-9. Still, New Holstein hopesits depth can wear down oppo-nents and keep the Huskies inthe top-half of the conference.

Plymouth2010-11 record: 19-6, 13-1

EWC (first)Coach: Brad Shutter, sixth

year (60-53)Returning letter winners:

Rachael Cecka, 6-0 jr.; JoannWolfenburg, 6-2 sr.; LizzyStanczyk, 5-5 sr.; MarissaGrapentine, 5-7 jr.; RachelHolzhaeuser, 5-9 jr.; SaraThompson 5-7 jr.

Other prospects: SophiaKiela, 5-5 jr.; Joa Cain, 5-9 jr.;Nikki Reil, 6-0 so.; Kailey Moe-genburg, 6-0 so.

Outlook: Few teams will beable to match up with the size ofthe defending EWC championPanthers, who have four girls atsix feet or taller, including theteam’s lone returning starter inCecka. While experience may bean issue at first, talent broughtup from a 20-2 JV team shouldadjust earlier than most. If Ply-

mouth can find a true pointguard to coordinate the offense,Plymouth could join Waupun andTwo Rivers in the race for theEWC crown.

Sheboygan Falls2010-11 record: 13-10, 11-3

EWC (second)Coach: LeRoy Hamilton,

eighth year(100-79)

Returningletter winners:Kelly Jens, 5-7sr.; StephKleckner, 5-9sr.; Erica Duda,5-8 jr.; NicoleFenner, 5-8 jr.;Staci Hasler,5-10 jr.

Other prospects: OliviaWarpinski, 6-1 sr.; Katie Kautzer,5-9 so.; Karlie Beeck, 5-8 so.;Maggie Manning, 5-7 jr.; AnnaMathieu, 5-7 jr.; Allison Latsch,5-5 jr.

Outlook: The Falcons havedecent size and a nice go-to re-turnee in Hasler, a second-teamAll-EWC forward last year. Fallshas won 11 or more game in theconference four years running, and is poised to keep up the im-pressive trend.

prep basketball player.But now, Sheboygan

Lutheran senior SamDekker has bridged thatgap in time.

Dekker, a University ofWisconsin commit, beginshis senior season rankedas the nation’s 18th-bestplayer by Rivals.com.ESPN.com ranks him 26thin the U.S. Wolf played inthe prestigious McDon-ald’s All-American Game, something Dekker is con-sidered a strong candidateto also do.

NBA rules prohibit theleague’s coaches fromcommenting on any cur-rent high school or collegeplayer, but Dekker’s voicerose with excitement whentalking about what he hasread and heard about Wolfover the years.

“He was very dominant, and he would just fill upgyms and every collegeprogram wanted him,”says Dekker, 17. “He couldhave gone anywhere. Hewas a beast, and nobodycould stop him.”

While there are similari-ties between Wolf backthen and Dekker now, there are obvious differ-ences. Wolf, 6-10 and 215during his senior year, wasa dominant post playerwho could extend his gameand hit feathery mid-rangejumpers. Dekker, now 6-8and 210 pounds, is a guardwho can do damage inside.

Wolf finished his careerwith 2,084 points, a markfellow four-year starterDekker (who has 1,697),will likely breeze past. However, Wolf’s teamswere generally better, andhe often sat long stretchesof the second half after theBombers had build largeleads.

When Wolf, now 46,played at Kohler, all eyeswere on him. It’s the samefor Dekker now, and heknows it. Wolf says he wasnever bothered by any so-called pressure, andDekker seems to sharethat trait.

“I never felt any pres-sure while I was goingthrough that time,” Wolfsays now. “As I look back, there were signs of pres-sure on me, but thanks tomy parents and siblings, itnever got to me.”

“I try not to notice it,”Dekker says of the scruti-

ny and fan interest. “Butevery human being isgoing to know when peopleare watching you. I realizethat. I have tried to growup fast, have tried hard notto act a fool around peoplebecause everyone is goingto critique what I’m doing. It comes with the territory, and you have to decide, how do you want people tosee you in the spotlight? What do you want the per-ception of you to be?”

Wolf’s reign over Wis-consin prep basketball wasso dominant, he was cho-sen as the state’s all-timehigh school player in a Mil-waukee Journal Sentinelfeature in 2005. Yet by allaccounts, he remainedhumble throughout his as-cent through the basket-ball ranks.

“I had a very strong baseat home growing up,” hesays. “If I acted up it waspretty simple; my momsaid, ‘Wait until your dadgets home.’ My dad was abig man. And my brothersand sisters … I was one ofseven kids. If I ever got alittle cocky, they camealong and put me in myplace.”

Jeff’s support systemgrowing up included hislate father, Leo, his mom,Pat, older brothers Jim,Jeff and John and oldersisters Judy, Laurie andMary Margaret.

“Our parents made us allfeel special,” Joe says. “Iwasn’t allowed to be toobig for my britches.”

Dekker’s support systemis strong too. His dad,Todd, is also his headcoach, and his brother,John, preceded him atLutheran and scored 1,919points from 2003-06 beforea solid college career at

NCAA Division IIILawrence University.Sam’s mother, Carol, andolder sister, Hannah, wereall smiles during Sam’ssigning ceremony on na-tional letter of intent dayearlier this month.

“I think he’s handlingeverything very well,”says Todd. “It’s still fun forSam, and I think that’s themost important thing. He’sreally having fun with thegame and as a father, that’sthe most pleasing thing tosee.”

Wolf parlayed his talentsinto a long NBA career, and a lifelong connectionto the game.

Sam Dekker says play-ing in the NBA has alwaysbeen his dream.

“But whatever happens, happens,” he says. “Onephase at a time. Right now, what’s most important ismy high school career, andhopefully after that, I’llhave a successful career atWisconsin. If somethingpresents itself after that, great. But I am totallytrusting in God’s plan andwhat He has in store forme.”

Whatever his futureholds, Dekker is wiseenough to know these arespecial times, times hehopes to look back on fond-ly years from now, justlike Wolf still does 28years after his final yearof high school.

“This is a year I want tocherish,” Dekker says. “Iwant to make the most outof this that I possibly can,at school, with my friendsand on court. Years fromnow, I don’t want to haveany regrets.”
