Framework

In early January we were successful in winning a place on the above Framework which covers minor maintenance, refurbishment and alteration projects. Public bodies within Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire also have access to this framework in addition to all schools within both Counties. The framework will last for a period of 2 years, with the option to extend for 2 further years.

Following our excellent performance nationally for the Post Office, we were appointed to a programme of works for WH Smith to undertake part refurbishment and upgrades to stores nationwide. This appointment draws on our extensive experience of fast track projects as all works are undertaken out of hours and stores remain fully functional during the projects.

Drawing on our extensive experience in the Healthcare sector, we gained a place on The Birmingham Children’s Hospital Framework which covers the provision of mechanical, plumbing, decorating and flooring projects within one of the busiest hospitals in England. Our local delivery service using our own direct workforce and supply chain were essential factors in winning this appointment.

HS1 Minor Works Framework

As the year drew to a close we were notified of HS1’s intention to appoint us to their Minor Works Framework. As the UK’s first high speed railway to connect London St. Pancras International to the Channel Tunnel, this 4 year agreement will see Shaylor Group deliver builders works including design and build, mechanical, electrical and plumbing elements.

Key Clients

2014 saw us return to work with long standing serial clients Calthorpe Estates. Having successfully completed a number of Heritage projects together previously, we turned our expertise to delivering 2 listed building refurbishments within the hospitality sector - one for The Edgbaston boutique hotel and the other for Birmingham’s newest gastropub The Highfield.

Thanks to our outstanding reputation in the student accommodation arena, we had the opportunity to complete 2 projects during the year for Unite Students, one of the biggest names in this sector. Drawing on our national presence, we delivered projects in both Leeds and Aberdeen to our usual fast- track, budget compliant and high quality standards.

Forging new relationships in the South West, we began working with the Wessex Reserve Forces & Cadets Association on the construction of a new training centre in Honiton, East Devon. The centre will provide a number of services for both Air Training Corps and Army Cadet Force cadets, including training classrooms, office space and theatres.

Our continued relationship with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) saw us complete our fourth project for the UK’s largest automotive manufacturers. Working within the live production facility at JLR’s iconic Castle Bromwich plant, we carried out building modifications to G Block. Works included extensive modifications to the mezzanine area, bespoke alterations and appropriate finishes throughout.

Refurbishment of the Year: The Belfry Green Zone

Young Achiever:Lee Cash, Quantity Surveyor

May saw our hard work on The Belfry Resort pay off when the project was awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ rating in the ‘Refurbishment of the Year’ category at the National Federation of Builders Annual Awards. The project was extremely special as The Belfry is a world famous sporting location, making it a highly visible platform to display Shaylor Group’s consummate professionalism. The Client had very high expectations and was an active part of the delivery team, being on site on a daily basis. Our team literally worked round the clock to allow the hotel to remain fully operational during the entire period of the works, including Christmas’ high season.

The year started with success at the West Midlands Celebrating Construction 2014 Awards where Quantity Surveyor Lee Cash was crowned ‘Young Achiever of the Year’. Lee gained recognition for his achievements in the industry, starting work with Shaylor Group on a one week work experience placement from school and culminating in a First Class Honours degree in Quantity Surveying from Birmingham City University. Lee is a shining example of how early engagement with a young person can genuinely benefit both an organisation and the person by applying learning to practical experience to yield the best results.

Awards

Construction Manager of the Year:Paul Fairholm

National Achiever:Martin Chambers

Appreciation of our outstanding performance on The Belfry Resort continued at the CIOB’s Construction Manager of the Year Awards. Project Manager Paul Fairholm won Shaylor Group’s first ever medal when he was named as Silver Medal winner in the ‘New Build & Refurbishment between £4-5m’ category. Paul was acknowledged for his competence in managing a series of fast track refurbishments and remodelling exercises to a number of areas of the resort’s hotel. With a programme of just 20 weeks and a tight budget, it required a great deal of planning, professionalism and supply chain collaboration to achieve this demanding task.

Our final award for the year saw very deserved recognition for Framework Director Martin Chambers when he was named Achiever of The Year at the National Celebrating Construction Awards, after taking the same title at the West Midlands ceremony. Martin’s career includes leading some of the region and country’s most prolific construction businesses and projects. A Past President of the CIOB, Martin’s achievements also include being Chair of Birmingham’s Family Housing Association, a governor of the University of Wolverhampton, external examiner with Aston University and a visiting professor at the University of Westminster.

Mary Ann Evans HospiceNew Bereavement Centre

Cornwall CouncilNewquay Harbour Fisherman’s Stores

We returned to the George Eliot Hospital site to build a new bereavement centre, The Warren, for the Mary Ann Evan’s Hospice. The name was chosen to reflect the intention of being a warm safe place; a refuge to turn to when needed. This new two-storey building overlooks the wonderful gardens and was designed to be a place of belonging and acceptance where grief is honoured and respected without any sense of being rushed into ‘moving on.’ The building has allowed the Hospice to expand its present service and can now offer one-to-one sessions, ‘Jigsaw’ tea parties and monthly Sanctuary Communion groups.

Our South West office constructed new Fisherman’s Stores including an office building for Cornwall Council in Newquay’s bustling harbour. The new building was constructed to replace a timber built structure that was burnt down some time ago; it consists of seven stores on the ground floor, with four first floor offices available for rent together with the accessible ancillary rooms to the first floor. Close liaison with the harbour master was maintained at all times to minimise the disruption to all harbour users and adjacent businesses, which enabled the harbour to remain fully operational throughout the works.

BMW Hams HallMulti Use Function Units

The Mansion GroupDanesgate House, Lincoln

Our work in the automotive sector this year saw us design and construct three Multi Use Function Units or MuFu’s H, J & K at BMW’s Plant in Hams Hall. All three units are located in different areas in the plant and have been designed to be multi-functional spaces. This includes being fully fitted out with new kitchen areas as well as the installation of bespoke furniture and vending machines. Hams Hall remained fully operational during the construction works with the plant being live 24/7. Our team made sure that an extremely high standard of cleanliness was adhered to during the works to limit the amount of dust coming into contact with the live plant.

Danesgate House is our 9th project for The Mansion Group over a period of 4 years. The works comprised of the much needed modernisation of the 1960s style ‘Utilitarian’ office block façade plus full internal refurbishment and remodelling to house 21 studios, 226 ensuite cluster bedrooms and 40 shared kitchens over 6 floors. We created all new ensuite cluster rooms on the ground floor and fully refurbished the existing ensuite clusters of the first to fifth floors We drew on our extensive experience of working in live environments as the building was occupied for the first 20 weeks and the interface with the existing students was critical.

Making A Difference on Devon Housing Project

Beating Bowel CancerCheque Presentation

We were incredibly proud to receive a letter of thanks from the parents of Luke Thomas, a new tenant of Cornwall Housing’s Meadow Place in Bodmin. Luke’s parents had never written a letter of gratitude before but felt compelled to commended Site Manager Gary Chambers for going above and beyond the call of duty in helping Luke, who has Spina Bifida, settle into his new home. Mrs Thomas noted “Not only has Gary answered all our queries and assisted us with absolutely everything we have needed, the way he has communicated with Luke has been phenomenal. Luke ended up moving into his new flat with ease”.

It was with great delight that Stephen Shaylor presented a cheque for £22,671 to Theo Coyne from Beating Bowel Cancer, having smashed our donation target of £10,000. Funds were raised from a number of initiatives including teams participating in the London Virgin Triathlon and the Wolf Run, the Fred Shaylor Golf Classic and Decembeard. Beating Bowel Cancer is a cause close to our hearts as Shaylor Group founder and Chairman Fred Shaylor lost his fight against the disease in 2013. Speaking of the donation, Stephen commented “In addition to the money, I personally hope we have played a part in raising awareness of this all too common disease”.

Distinguished Visitors to Trenance Cottages, Newquay

Time Capsule Discovered on Oasis Academy Site

As summer began to bloom, our South West team received a special visit to their renovation project at Trenance Cottages. Minister for Culture Ed Vaizey joined Heritage Lottery Fund SW Head Nerys Watts and a number of Trustees of the Cottages on a site visit to view progress on the £700,000 Grade II Listed building’s renovation. The project involved refurbishing the cottages with rooms housing displays showing how the residents of the three cottages lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Speaking of the project, Nerys Watts observed “This building will tell Newquay’s story in different ways and everyone will be able to come and sample that story”.

A time capsule, buried when Queen Victoria was on the throne, was found and opened at our Oasis Academy project. The glass jar was hidden in the wall in 1883 and contained a letter explaining why the school was being built, a list of the school’s generous benefactors and newspapers of the day. Our treasure-finding workers discovered the capsule in a cavity after carefully removing a sandstone foundation stone, laid by the Countess of Dartmouth, from a wall. The capsule was opened by Seren Fisher, head of conservation at the Library of Birmingham, along with our Contract Manager Dave Disney and Oasis’ Head Teacher Jessie Elbaz.
