A Word From Your Agent... Hello 4-H Families!

Right now our office is in full Club Days mode! Our Shawnee County event is Feb. 17

th at Shawnee Heights middle school, and we hope to have schedules

and room assignments out Monday Feb. 5th! If you didn’t sign up for a Club Days events you are still welcome to come watch other youth perform.

This year we had families select their own schedules. We will still have some flexibility in our rooms that day due to cancellations. Please let the room monitors know if you are trying to work in at a time other than what was scheduled. We will not keep our judges past the time the room is scheduled to be done.

Rooms will start at 8:30am, so please do not come to the school before 8. We know many of you like to be early but we are not to be in the building before 8 except for Kim and myself.

Please make sure your first room monitor for your club is at your room by 8:15 so they can take pictures of how the room was originally set. They will then set up the room for their event and at the end of the day the room needs to be put back the way it was.

Lastly, if we have severe weather use your best judgment on if you should come. We don’t usually cancel club days because it cannot be rescheduled. It is up to every family to decide if it is safe enough for them to make the trip to the school. If we do cancel we will post on the Shawnee County 4 -H Facebook page. Make sure to like our page! 2018 Camp Scholarships

Reminder that applications for Johnsonville Camp Scholarship for Rock Springs 4-H

camp are due February 23rd! These are $125 scholarships for full time campers.

(Currently in 3rd-7th grade)

Our Janet Miller memorial scholarship for Rookie campers are also due February 23rd!

These are $25 scholarships for rookie campers. (Currently in 1st and 2nd grade.)

Market Beef and Bucket Calf Weigh-In

Market Beef and Bucket Calf weigh-in is Sunday February 4th from 2-3pm at Steve and Mary Gleason’s Farm 13600 SW 33rd St. Topeka, KS 66614. This is the only market beef weigh-in to be eligible for the county fair and state shows. There will be another bucket calf weigh-in on April 29th for those calves that have not been born yet. 4-H tags are $1.75 a tag and EID tags for those animals that might be showing at state shows is $3.00 a tag. Please try and bring exact change. If you have questions or concerns call Candis Meerpohl at 785-232-0062 ext. 120 If you cannot make it to beef weigh in you have the following week to bring your animal to the extension office to be tagged. The Extension office is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Please call ahead.

Interested in Livestock Judging?

Shawnee County Livestock Committee is hosting a livestock clinic and contest on February 10th, registration

begins at 12:00 p.m. and will close at 12:45 p.m., with the contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. and

conclude by 4:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per judger with a maximum of four per team (top tree scores will be used).

The contest will take place at the Kansas ExpoCentre Livestock Pavilion.

The contest is open to all and will be separated by divisions (age and teams/individuals) with a cash award

given to the top youth team in each division and top three youth individuals in each division. There will be

type demonstrations on all species, and NO reasons are required. Please contact Candis if you have any

Fair Book Cover Contest-

The 2018 Shawnee County Fair theme has been chosen. Of all the ideas entered,

the Shawnee County Fair board selected “Around the World at the Fair”. This

theme was entered by the Deer Trail 4-H Club. Now the Fair board is announcing

the annual cover contest for the fair book.

Here are the rules:

Must be on 8 1/2 x 11 paper (Must be done in Portrait Orientation NOT Landscape orientation)

Design must be in black and white, do not use color

Art can be hand drawn or computer generated, but must be original

Must include the dates of the County Fair; July 21-22 – Horse Show, July 26-29th – County Fair

Must mention Open Class

Must include the theme of the fair (Around the World at the Fair).

Put your name, phone number and Club on the BACK SIDE of the entry.

Entries are due to the Extension Office by February 23th at 5PM.

There will be a $50 cash prize for the cover chosen to be on the front of the Fair Book! The runner up will

have their artwork printed inside the fair book as well.

Campference 2018 4-H Campference is for youth ages 12- 14 (before January 1, 2018), and will be held June 26-29 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4 -H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4 -H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas.

Registration and detailed information will be the State 4-H Website in March Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full the last four years! Register online by May 15 (or earlier it will close when it is full) and payment must be in the local Extension Offices by May 15.

Volunteers Needed! **New Times**

From Farm to You will be held April 17th from 8:30am-3pm at Domer Arena. We have 900 Shawnee County

second graders attend to learn about agriculture. We are in need of older 4-H'ers (8th graders and above) to act as

group leaders throughout the day. You will guide the youth and their teachers from learning station to learning

station. Please email Candis at [email protected] and let her know if you can help with this program.

Half-day shifts are available.

Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana. Come learn about the entomology project before the

bugs really get buzzing!

We’ll meet in the Extension Office downstairs meeting room on Monday

February 5 and Monday March 5 at 7 p.m. to learn how to get started with

collections or photo notebooks and talk about other activities for the

year. Everyone is welcome, even if you are just curious about the

4-H Photo Workshop-“Island of Photo Opportunities”

The Shawnee County 4-H Photography Workshop Committee and KS Photo Action

Team, would like to invite you to join us on April 14th, 2018 for "Island of Photo

Opportunities" at the Auburn Community Center. The workshop will begin at 1:00pm

and conclude at 4pm, teaching valuable skills from some of the state’s experts in

photography. For those interested, a photography judging contest will also be

Kansas Junior Sheep Producer Day Registration Open By Lexie Hayes

The 2018 Kansas Junior Sheep Producer Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2018 in Weber Hall on the Kansas State University campus. This event will be a fun filled, educational day of activities in which youth, parents, sheep project leaders, and adults can increase their knowledge and experience of sheep production and management. This interactive, educational event will stimulate enthusiasm and provide a foundation for the management and care of youth sheep projects. Presentations and demonstrations will be provided by K -State faculty and graduate students, as well as guest speakers. Topics that will be covered include project selection, nutrition, equipment and facilities, meat science, the state livestock nomination process, sheep health, wellness, and diseases, wool, showmanship, grooming, and Youth for the Quality Care of Animals certification. A complimentary lunch and t -shirt will be provided for participants.

Registration is due by February 23, 2018 and is $15/person. Registrations received after February 23rd cannot be guaranteed a t-shirt and will be $20/person. Growing New Skills Through 4-H Days, Auburn 4-H Club

As a young 4-Her I always remember growing excited around this time of year. These late winter months

were filled with lots of fun 4-H events such as Jr/Sr Lockin, January Jamboree, and my personal favorite, 4-H

Days. While performing in front of so many people at 4-H Days was intimidating for me the first year I did it, it

quickly grew to be something I loved and looked forward to every year. This was an event which allowed me

to grow my public speaking skills, meet and develop relationships with new 4-Hers and old 4-H friends, and

pushed me to explore new interests, all while having a great time! Over the years I participated in many

different events, from Gavel Games (where I dressed up and acted with my friends in a mock 4-H meeting to

learn about parliamentary procedure) to 4-H skits, to vocal performances, to even historical speeches. For

those youth who have never heard of 4-H Days or have never attended this yearly event, I highly encourage

4-H youth to attend! It’s not too late to sign up, and for those interested 4-H Days is February 17 at Shawnee

Indian Creek 4-H Club

This month, the Indian Creek 4-H Club participated in many activities. We started off

January by offering a fun and easy reindeer ornament craft at January Jamboree.

We also had a group of members do project talks at Lexington Park Assisted Living.

At our monthly meeting, we had a presentation from Candis and a fun relay race

with toothpicks for our recreation. We are all preparing for Club Days next month!

Silver Lake 4-H Club

On January 14, 2018 the Silver Lake 4-H Club met for their January meeting. At the meeting, club leader,

Shannon Weber, discussed with us 4-H Days and the 4-H camp scholarships. During member sharing time,

Anna Ruby, one of our club members, shared about her experience in making bread making kits with her

mother Bernice Ruby. Also during sharing time Manny, another

member, and Anna Ruby shared about January Jamboree. Manny

brought some of the fun art projects that he made at January

Jamboree. This includes pink slime, a foam penguin, and a decorated

flower pot.

For our main program, two gentlemen came to our 4-H meeting to

discuss their fishing club and newly formed archery and hunting clubs.

They taught us the names of several different arrows and bows. They

also taught us the names of four different fishing poles and showed us

which poles had the fastest reeling times. -Reporter Olivia Day

Shunga Valley 4-H Club Shunga Valley has been busy! We had our annual Christmas Party in

December where we enjoyed food, crafts, and walking through Potwin.

We also baked homemade goodies for our local Ronald McDonald

House Cookie Walk Fundraiser. Starting in January we kicked off our

pop tab collection for the Ronald McDonald House. We have set a goal

of collecting at least one pound to be donated by the end of the 4-H

year.

Shawnee Riders 4-H Club

The Shawnee County Riders have been busy this past couple of months.

In October we did the 48 hours in 4h by volunteering at the Humane

Society! We created treats for the cat and dog. We got to give the treats

out to the cats and dog and we even got to play with them. It was a great

way to spend a Sunday afternoon! For our November meeting we painted

homemade ornaments in preparation for our next volunteer activity. We

also celebrated our record books again. We had fun painting!!!! Instead of our December meeting, we went

to the Lexington Park extended care facility. We sang to the tenants there along with handing out our

ornaments and we also handed out some lap blankets! ~Reporter Calista Covel

Have you ever been to January Jamboree? It's a craft make-and-take with crafts ranging from free to $2.00,

held every year in early January. This year January Jamboree was held at Countryside United Methodist

Church and there were many different booths provided by the 4-H clubs. Some of the crafts were slime

making, stress balls, painting plates, or creating reindeer ornaments, among others. January Jamboree went

well. Over 130 youth attended and some 4-Hers invited their friends to come and learn more about 4-H. If

you haven't attended before, think about attending next year to meet some new friends and make great
