A Word From Your Agent...
Hello 4-H Families,
Believe it or not but registrations will be opening soon for summer activities like
4-H Camp, Discovery Days and Campference. We don’t want you to miss out on
anything so read the Chatterbox closely and if you have questions about an
opportunity call us!
I hope many of our older youth will apply to be camp counselors for 4-H camp this
year. Our dates to camp are June 14th-17th and counselors go up on the 13th for
counselor training. You can apply to be a camp counselor even if you did not
attend camp when you were younger. Everyone has a co-counselor so we pair
new counselors with youth who have experience. Youth that are in 8th-12th grade
can apply to be a counselor and first preference is given to youth is 9th-12th grade.
The application is online this year. I will have a link ready for that shortly!
March is also a good time to go check your 4-H projects before our May 1st
deadline for enrollment. You can join 4-H at any time during the year but if you
want to take a project to the fair you must be enrolled in that project on May 1st.
Please remember that going to project meetings do not put you in that project.
You have to add them on your 4-H online profile.
Because of the program fee I encourage families to enroll now. If you are paying
by check you are not fully enrolled until that check has been processed at the
State 4-H office. That means if you enroll a week before May 1st but pay by
check you still may not be enrolled by the deadline. Do yourself a favor, take care
or this today! Thank you for being a part of Shawnee County 4-H! -Candis

March 5th. At that time top purples who have not signed up will have a time as-
signed.
Regional Club Days is March 9th at Wheatride Middle School in Gardner Kansas.
Shawnee County will also need some room monitors. So if you are going please

Campference 2019
4-H Campference is for youth ages 12- 14 (before January 1, 2019), and will be held June 25 -28
at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying
the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional
opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4 -H
Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4 -H program and how to better
interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas.
Registration and detailed information will be the State 4-H Website in March Register early as
the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full the last four years! Register
online by May 15 (or earlier it will close when it is full) and payment must be in the local
Extension Offices by May 15.
Volunteers Needed! **New Times**
From Farm to You will be held April 15th from 8:30am-3pm at Domer Arena. We have 900 Shawnee County
second graders attend to learn about agriculture. We are in need of older 4-H'ers (8th graders and above) to act as
group leaders throughout the day. You will guide the youth and their teachers from learning station to learning
station. Please email Candis at [email protected] and let her know if you can help with this program.
Half-day shifts are available.

Auburn By Ethan Jackson
We had a number of Auburn 4-H Club members participate in Shawnee
County 4-H Club Days. There were many different individual projects
and also group projects including a skit and a gavel games team. The
skit featured Disney villains who went to the county fair and were
convinced to join 4-H rather than destroying it. The Gavel Games team
featured five Disney Villains who ran their own 4-H club in their quest
to be villains.

Entomology
Bugs! Are you looking for an excuse to be outside? Are you fascinated by the creepy-crawly side of the world? The Entomology project is for you! We have classes for pinned insect display boxes, photography notebooks, and educational displays. There is room for beginners through advanced youth and it can be just for fun or highly competitive. As the county project leader for Entomology, my goal is to help youth and parents learn about the pro-ject, then set and meet goals that work for them. Project leader Bryan Boutz is available to help you get started. Email [email protected] or call/text 785-317-0839.

Indian Creek The members of Indian Creek tried many new events at Club Days this year. We entered a Club Dance, a
Junior Gavel Games team, and Club Band. Many of our members also did individual events.
At our February meeting, we had our annual Valentine’s Auction. Our members brought in baked good
and other treats to auction off. The chocolate dipped strawberries were a very popular auction item!
Our club raised $286 dollars for the Sunrise Optimist Club and the Topeka Rescue Mission.
Tecumseh Trooper’s
“At the Tecumseh Trooper's February meeting, the President, Fiona Stevenson, was excited to use her new
gavel that the club voted to purchase. We signed up for bringing pies and brownies and doing shifts for
County 4-H Days. Molly Busenitz described what it was like to attend Rock Springs 4-H camp for mem-
bers who had not gone yet. Jasmine Simms gave her first ever project talk about the zipper pouch she
made at Clothing Cares. She also led our recreation, which was a fun mingling game. " Sean Stevenson,
