POST-INSTALLATION CLEANUP

Now that your new Shaw floor has been installed, it must be protected from exposure to construction dust and debris, paint, and damage that may occur throughout the rest of the construction/remodeling project.

• DO thoroughly vacuum the floor to remove fine dust and debris

• DO use the right vacuum. For carpet, choose an upright vacuum with a beater bar/brush roller. For hard floors, use a vacuum with an attachment designed for hard surfaces. Beater bar/brush rollers can scratch hard floors

• DO use a microfiber dust mop on hard surfaces to pick up tiny particulates

• DO cover clean floors with plastic or builder board to protect them throughout the rest of the construction project. Use a breathable barrier product to prevent moisture buildup

• DO make sure that floors are covered all the way up to the baseboards

• DO NOT use water or liquid cleaning agents to remove drywall dust or residue from hard floors

• DO NOT cover floors until they have been properly cleaned first

• DO NOT use a carpet shield longer than 30 days

DO’S AND DON’TS

DRYWALL DUST REMOVAL

When construction/drywall dust comes into contact with liquid on a floor, it can create cement-like spots or a cloudy residue on the floor. Do not use water or other cleaning solutions to remove dust and residues, as it can make the problem worse or lead to permanent damage of the floor. Dry soil needs to be removed with dry methods.

• DO use approved floor pads to remove caked-on drywall dust or residue

• DO use Shaw Total Care Hard Surfaces FLOORING CLEANER to remove drywall dust (be sure to follow label directions for proper cleaning procedures)

• DO use a microfiber mop, such as the Shaw Total Care Microfiber Mop Kit, to clean the floor without scratching the surface

• DO NOT use water or liquid cleaning agents to remove drywall dust or residue from hard floors

• DO NOT use abrasive pads, steel wool, or scrubbers to remove caked-on drywall dust or residue as these may scratch the floor

• DO NOT use a detergent or soap-based product, as it may dull the surface

• DO NOT use cleaning agents that contain acids, vinegar, chlorine, or ammonia, as these chemicals can damage and discolor the surface or grout

PAINT SPOT REMOVAL

Paint spots/spills should always be immediately wiped up with plain water while the paint is still wet. If, however, spots dry on the surface, or a spot turns into a smear, care must be taken to successfully remove the paint without damaging the flooring.

• DO use isopropyl alcohol or Betco CitruSolv and a clean white towel or light-duty utility pad to gently rub/scrub the spot

• DO test your cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area to avoid causing damage

• DO use extreme care so as to avoid scratching the surface

• DO NOT use abrasive pads, steel wool, or scrubbers to remove caked-on drywall dust or residue as these may scratch the floor

• DO NOT use a detergent or soap-based product, as it may dull the surface

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO CLEAN WALK-OFF MATS

DO’S AND DON’TS

WALK-OFF MATS

Floor mats are designed to stop the dirt before it gets into the building, reducing overall maintenance costs and improving safety. Every facility, regardless of size or traffic, should use walk-off mats to reduce soiling and protect the flooring investment. Up to 80% of tracked-in soiling can be removed with proper walk-off matting.

• DO use a CRI-approved vacuum

• DO use walk-off mats after every entry point in the building or between high-soil areas (such as warehouse and shop areas) and low-soil areas (such as lobbies and offices)

• DO use both soil removal/scraper mats and liquid removal/wiper mats to contain both wet and dry soiling

• DO use at least 15 feet of matting to remove the majority of dirt

• DO regularly clean walk-off mats to remove accumulated soil and ensure they can continue to perform as needed

DO’S AND DON’TS

In addition to adding to the beauty of a home, carpet serves as a giant filter, collecting the dirt, hair, and allergens that get tracked in through daily life. To keep carpet looking and performing as it should, hot water extraction cleaning should be performed every 6–12 months (or more often as needed).

• DO use a CRI-approved vacuum

• DO use an upright vacuum with a beater bar/brush roller to thoroughly vacuum the carpet on a weekly basis, or more often as needed

• DO clean spots and spills as soon as they happen by gently blotting the area with a clean dry cloth

• DO use Shaw Total Care STAIN & SOIL Remover Concentrate when performing hot water extraction on the carpet

DO’S AND DON’TS

Low-moisture encapsulation is an interim cleaning process that enables the carpet’s appearance to be improved and returned to service in a short amount of time. This method of cleaning not only promotes a cleaner, more attractive appearance, but also extends the time in between restorative maintenance/hot water extraction cleanings.

• DO use Shaw Total Care STAIN & SOIL Remover Concentrate when performing low-moisture encapsulation cleaning on the carpet

• DO use a carpet rake or counter-rotating brush machine to thoroughly agitate the carpet fibers

• DO use air movers to speed up the drying process to prevent wicking or excessive dry times

*Use of a pile lifter may be a consideration. Pile lifting helps restore the surface pile yarns and helps remove embedded dry sand and soil.

CARPET SPOT REMOVAL

Spots and spills are common in any home or business, and it only takes a few of them to negatively impact the overall look and appeal of the carpet. When it comes to spot removal/cleanup, time is the biggest enemy. The longer a spot remains untreated, the worse it becomes. To keep carpet looking its best and prolong the time between interim or restorative cleanings, clean all spots and spills as quickly as possible using the proper products.

DO’S AND DON’TS

• DO use a clean white cloth to gently blot the spot

• DO begin removing the spot by starting from the outside (lightest concentration) and working toward the center (heaviest concentration)

• DO use Shaw Total Care Carpet Safe HEAVY DUTY SPOTTER or the Matrix® Professional Spotting Kit to remove all spots and spills on carpet

• DO use the EZ Spot® Portable Spotting Extractor to thoroughly rinse and extract the area

• DO use air movers to speed up the drying process to prevent wicking or excessive dry times

• DO NOT rub or scrub the area as this can cause the spot to spread

• DO NOT over-wet or saturate the area as this can cause the spot to spread

• DO NOT apply spotter directly to carpet unless instructed to do so on the label. Instead, apply the spotter to a clean white cloth and use a nylon spotting brush to tamp it against the spot
