A dream trip around the world concluded with Scott Blokker’s unexpected and romantic proposal to Shaun Thompson in St. Maarten amongst twenty-five family members and close friends. “All of our friends and family were together in such a beautiful place; I felt it would be the perfect location to propose,” shares Scott regarding his pronouncement of love to Shaun, who is the creator of the Insanity workout program. Exactly two years to the day of their first meeting, Shaun and Scott declared their adoration for one

another in a room full of loved ones. The couple selected the historic Edison Ballroom in New York City as the ideal venue for their 1930s glam-themed wedding entitled “Midnight Love.” The romantic title was beautifully carried throughout the event and etched on place cards, the aisle runner, and “Playbill” programs. Invitations, in the form of tickets, offered guests a preview of the impending celebration. “We wanted to have a non-traditional wedding that was a celebration of life and love,” explains Scott.

The classic Art Deco design of the ballroom was highlighted by an array of Scott’s favorite amethyst tones and dramatically decorated to match the glamorous style scheme. Magenta lighting provided a sensual ambience. Additionally, an upstairs room with a karaoke machine was named the “Blokker Lavender Lounge.” From the violet quilted table covers to the wine-colored calla lily that graced the lapel of Scott’s tailored coat, not a single detail went unbathed in a shade of the royal hue. Prior to the nuptials, guests were seated in the dreamy theater for a sumptuous meal. Place settings consisted of alternating napkin treatments that each enveloped customized menu cards. Shiny ebony plates were placed on dazzling silver chargers and purple glassware sat at the head. The romantic space displayed circular tables with a variety of breathtaking centerpieces. Tabletops exhibited glass vases that held the luminescent glow of candlelight along with a luscious array of crimson roses, fuchsia calla lilies, and cranberry carnations.

Scott credits Shaun’s creativity as the major contributor to what turned out to be a beautiful, magical evening full of memorable revelations. “Most of our wedding was a complete surprise to me!” exclaims Scott. “Shaun is an amazing dancer and choreographer, so he designed an entire show for me as a symbol of his love.” Romantic singers, an ethereal aerialist, and an amusing game show were all part of the stunning performance. Shaun also performed several routines he choreographed that were supported by a group of remarkable backup dancers. Scott viewed the entire act from a resplendent silver throne that was yet another distinct and stunning wedding detail.

A unique ceremony followed the awe-inspiring entertainment. The wedding party wore plum-colored sheaths and carried long-stemmed calla lilies, while the grooms looked dashing in charcoal pinstriped suits. A grey fedora adorned with magenta feathers topped off Scott’s ceremony look. “Walking down the aisle escorted by my brother and mother, and seeing Scott and his parents was the most emotional moment of my life,” confides Shaun. The couple exchanged vows in front of an ornately decorated amethyst altar that was adorned with a plethora of gem-colored roses. A burst of confetti marked the conclusion of the romantic ceremony and the couple’s first kiss. Following the sentimental nuptials, dinner tables were removed and dancing ensued beneath shiny disco balls until the wee hours of the morning. “We spent the entire time holding hands. It was amazing,” recalls Shaun. As much as the couple cherished the presence of their family and friends, Scott offers this advice to couples: “Limit the amount of time you spend taking pictures and take some time to be alone and enjoy the afterglow of the ceremony.” Scott offers his own words of wisdom to those planning a wedding: “This is your special day – enjoy it and live in the moment!” MONIQUE MORA
