The first stage of Ma Tau Wai Station diaphragm wall construction works are about

to be completed and the second stage of works will follow. Under the project, traffic

lanes along Ma Tau Wai Road are being utilised as the works site in phases. Under

the second stage, the existing works site along Ma Tau Wai Road will be reinstated

as 2 southbound and 1 northbound traffic lanes for about one and a half year.

The new works site will be on the opposite side of Ma Tau Wai Road and will be located closer to residential buildings. To address the

community’s concerns on building safety and impact on the environment, the MTR Corporation has conducted detailed geotechnical

assessments and building condition surveys and continues to construct the station structure by diaphragm walls and cross walls to

enhance the support and strength of the station and the underground strata.

The Corporation and the contractor have installed real time vibration monitoring devices at various buildings along Ma Tau Wai Road

and Maidstone Road to carry out 24-hour monitoring of vibration, tilting and settlement. The Corporation will take every possible

measure to minimize the disturbance to the community.

Temporary Traffic Management SchemeI would like to truly thank

residents and District Councillors

for their patience and support

since the works of SCL Kowloon

City Section commenced in 2012.

The first stage of Ma Tau Wai

Station construction beneath

the original southbound lanes

of Ma Tau Wai Road is almost

finished, whilst the second stage has commenced gradually.

The associated traffic management arrangements will

commence in late January, and the existing traffic lanes

will be occupied as the works site. Shops and residents may

experience inconvenience as the new works site will be closer

to residential buildings. We will use appropriate construction

methods and take precautionary measures to reduce the

impact to the public.

In the past year, we have encountered and overcame many

challenges. Among them was the water main burst at Ma

Tau Wai Road. To reduce the chances of re-occurrence, we

laid new water mains at Sheung Heung Road and Kowloon

City Road to replace the existing water mains underneath

Ma Tau Wai Road. The work is now completed. We will keep

our efforts on our works, and once again thank you for all

of your support.

We wish you all have a prosperous Year of the Horse!

Publications concerning the second stage of Ma Tau Wai Station

Construction and related traffic arrangements are under development.

Details will be communicated to residents through flyers, notices, and

home visits.

MTR Corporation

The Corporation conducted an in-depth review of our station construction

activities after residents reported unusual building vibrations in mid May,

and the review has been completed.

The results showed that the vibration readings were within the normal

range. During the formwork operation, a comparatively higher level of

vibration was generated which may have caused discomfort for those

inside nearby buildings at the time. Nevertheless, there was no adverse

impact to structural integrity. The report of the in-depth review has been

endorsed by relevant Government departments, and works have now

fully resumed.

Excavation Works at Ma Tau Wai Road to Resume

To facilitate the construction of Ma Tau Wai Station, the next stage of

the temporary traffic management scheme at Ma Tau Wai Road has

commenced in phases. The existing works site along Ma Tau Wai Road

will be reinstated as 2 southbound and 1 northbound traffic lanes. Traffic

arrangements at Kau Pui Lung Road, Tin Kwong

Road, Lok Shan Road, and Farm Road will remain

largely unchanged. As the new works site will

separate the northbound lane and the footpath,

the stop for northbound overnight bus routes will

be relocated to the temporary bus stops outside

Anhui Street.

Water Mains Diversion at Kowloon City

Underpinning of East Kowloon Corridor

As the tunnels connecting To Kwa Wan Station and Ho Man Tin Station will

conflict with the East Kowloon Corridor’s foundations near Anhui Street,

underpinning works have to be carried out. To facilitate the works, temporary

traffic arrangements are implemented at Ma Tau Wai Road near Chi Kiang

Street and Anhui Street from 3 November 2013 for 1.5 years.

Suspended water mains

The water main system at Kowloon City has been in use for many years. The Corporation and Water Supplies Department

began discussions on handling the water mains underneath Ma Tau Wai Road since the design stage of the project, and it was

later confirmed that the water mains underneath Ma Tau Wai Road were to be replaced by new fresh water mains and salt

water mains to be laid underneath Kowloon City Road and Sheung Heung Road.

The works are originally planned to be completed in the 1st quarter of 2014. After

the two water main burst incidents happened near Kiang Su Street recently, the

Corporation has been working hard to advance the programme of the water mains

diversion works. With support from related Government departments, the salt

water mains started to operate in December 2013 while the fresh water mains will

be in use from early 2014.

Hi, Kelvin! We received a notice. It says ground investigation works will

be carried out for the SCL. What is that?

Did you design SCL’s stations and alignment based on these

details?

Of course! For instance, based on this information,

the SCL tunnels between Shansi Street and Ho Man

Tin Station will be built in rock!

Like a birthday cake, there are different layers in the underground soil.

The upper layer is usually soft while the lower layer is usually made of rock.

Generally speaking, the deeper the layer the stronger the ground. Ground

investigation enables us to comprehend the underground geology.

Quiz How can we measure vibrations 24 hours a day?

One of the entrances of Ma Tau Wai

Station is located at Kiang Su Street. Part

of the carriageway of Kiang Su Street

has been suspended to carry out ground

investigation and piling works for the

entrance. Meter parking spaces will be

suspended. Works will be completed in

2018.

Kai Tak Station :

The civil contract of Kai Tak Station

and associated tunnels was awarded in

April 2013. Excavation works of station

and tunnels are being carried out by

the contractor.

Diamond Hill to Kai Tak Station

tunnelling works commenced in May

2013. Construction of the tunnel boring

machine launching shaft is being

carried out near Kai Ching Estate.

To Kwa Wan Station :

Site formation works inside Olympic

Garden are in progress to prepare for

the underpinning works of Kowloon

City Flyover and construction of the

pedestrian walkway. Part of the

footpath has been suspended to

facilitate the works.

Pipe piling works for the construction of the entrance at Nam Kok Road are in progress.

The 1st stage of works are targeted to be completed by the 1st quarter of 2014 and the

2nd stage will follow.

Piling works are in progress at the

works area of Kai Tak Development

Area for the construction of To Kwa

Wan station box, pedestrian subways

and the launching shaft of the tunnel

boring machine.

Ground investigation at Pak Tai Street

is in progress. Piling works for Pak Tai

Street entrance will commence in the

3rd quarter of 2014.

Underground utilities diversion works

are now in progress at Lok Shan Road.

Construction of the station entrance

will commence in the 1st quarter of

2014.

Construction works of diaphragm walls

and cross walls of the station are in

progress outside SKH Good Shepherd

Primary School.

Bus and minibus stops located outside

SKH Good Shepherd Primary School

have been moved back to To Kwa Wan

Market from 6 October 2013.

The SCL Kowloon City Section

projects team and the contractor

Samsung-Hsin Chong Joint

Venture paid visits to shops

and the neighbourhood and

distributed mooncakes to

celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival.

The team has also visited YMCA

Farm Road Nursery School to

introduce the SCL project and

make lanterns with the children.

A group of children from Kowloon City District joined the SCL projects

team this summer as our “Junior Railway Engineers”. Through

various interactive activities, they learnt more about the planning and

construction of the SCL as well as railway operations.

The SCL Kowloon City Section projects

team and the contractor Samsung-Hsin

Chong Joint Venture set up a game booth

in Good Shepherd Carnival to share the

joy with the community and celebrate

the 50th anniversary of Good Shepherd

Primary School.
