    The Sharp AR-M700 is one of three newepartmental digital MFP products introducedy Sharp.

    The new range of products (which span 55-0ppm) are the fastest digital MFPs ever

    ntroduced with Sharps own technology ashe design platform.

    The Sharp AR-M700 is available in twoonfigurations: the AR-M700U, which is aopier-only out of the box, and the

    AR-M700N, which shares the same

    pecifications as the AR-M700U but includesetwork printing as standard.

    The Sharp AR-M700 offers a number ofnnovative design features spanning paperandling, security, network scanning andrinting.

    Some of the most noteworthy features are:

    Single-pass duplex scanning (whichSharp calls Scan technology);

    Advanced security

    options;Fax and PC-fax upgradeoptions;

    Direct TIFF and PDFprinting;

    110 lb. duplex printingfrom three different papersupplies;

    Standard tandem copyand print capability on700N version;

    Carbon-copy printingutility;

    Standard document filingusing 16GB portionedarea of 40GB hard drive;

    LDAP support standardwith network scanning kit.

    User authentication

    The pricing of the Sharp AR-M700is aggressive, with the copier-only

    AR-M700U having a suggestedretail price below that of several ofthe major 60ppm competitors.

    The cost benefits of the Sharp AR-M700 are still evident when printingand scanning upgrade options areincluded within the cost equation.

    Paper Handling:

    The Sharp AR-M700 comes standard withour paper sources and a capacity of 3,100heets. Included standard are:

    2,000-sheet tandem drawer, which canhold two separate 1,000-sheet letter/A4paper stocks. Unlike some manufacturertandem drawer designs, the two drawersof the Sharp unit can not be opened andrefilled independently.

    Two 500-sheet universal drawers whichcan hold paper up to 11 x 17/A3.

    100-sheet bypass unit for handlingheavier paper stocks up to 110lb. Index /220gsm.

    Paper supplies can be expanded via twoptional purchases:

    3,500-sheet letter/A4 capable largecapacity unit, taking maximum papercapacity to 6,600 sheets.

    100-sheet Post-Process Inserter Unit,which allows pre-printed sheets (which

    would be damaged by the hightemperature of the fuser unit) to be addedafter the printing process.

    Sharp advises that 110 lb. paper stock can beuplex printed from the bypass and the twoniversal drawers.

    While the standard and maximum paperupplies of the Sharp AR-M700 may not behe highest in its sector, they should prove

    more than adequate for most office uses.

    Finishing Options:

    The Sharp AR-M700 comes with a choice ofwo finishers:

    . A two tray finisher (maximum capacity4,000 sheets) with multi-position staplingup to 50-sheet documents.

    2. A saddle-stitchfinisher (maximumcapacity 4,000sheets) with multi-position stapling upto 50-sheetdocuments, plusthe ability tosaddle-stitchbooklets up to 15sheets in size(creating 60-pagebooklets).

    A 2 and 3 hole punchunit can be added toeither finisher unit, ascan the post process inserter unit.

    Document Feeder:

    Sharp includes a duplexing single-passdocument feeder within the entry-level priceof the AR-M700. While this is not unusual, thedesign of the document feeder does separateit from most competing units. The document

    feeder scans both sides of an original at thesame time using a dual scanner head design,which Sharp calls Scan technology.

    Sharp promotes this technology as deliveringmultiple benefits to users:

    1. Faster duplex scanning capability versustraditional reversing document feeders,which have to flip the originals over andre-feed the page over the scanner headto read the second side.

    2. Wider range of originals supported

    through the automatic document feederdue to the straight paper path through thescanner unit.

    3. Greater reliability of scanner, due to itsless strenuous paper path.

    Network Printing:

    Network printing comes as standard on theSharp AR-700N, and is an optional upgradeurchase for the AR-M700U copier-onlyntry-level model.

    Network printing is powered by a 525MHzrocessor. PCL6 is included as standard,

    with PostScript 3 being an additionalpgrade item. Direct printing of TIFF and

    PDF files is a standard feature for the print-nabled Sharp AR-M700.

    Printing utilizes the same RAM (128MBtandard) and hard drive (40GB) as used byhe copier function.

    Ethernet, USB 2.0 and parallel connectivityre included as standard within the printunction.

    Network Scanning:

    Network scanning is an optional purchase foroth versions of the Sharp AR-M700. Topgrade the Sharp AR-M700U (copier-onlyersion), the printer upgrade kit must first beurchased.

    The standard network scanning kit includeshe ability to scan documents to a range ofocations: email addresses, FTP locations,etwork folder locations and local copierard drive folders. With the optional fax unit

    nstalled, users also have the ability to scano fax numbers and internet fax addresses.

    Up to 999 scanning destinations can betored in the local device address book. Theevice also supports LDAP which meanshat users can search a central corporateontact list dynamically through the controlanel of the Sharp AR-M700.

    The device includes user authenticationwhich restricts access to the scanningunctionality to authorized users only.

    Security Measures:

    Sharp has been at theforefront of MFP security for some time, andwas the first to achieve Common Criteriacertification for its hard drive overwritingsystem on its Imager series.

    Standard security measures include:

    Confidential print, where jobs are heldon the local device until the security PINcode is entered at the control panel.

    User authentication, which verifies user

    access on the network before any scanoperation is performed. This protects thenetwork from unauthorized scanning andemail communications.

    IP/MAC address filtering, where thenetwork interface card can beprogrammed to restrict access to thedevice to specific PCs within a network.

    500 user codes, which force users toenter their code before any access to thedevice can be achieved. This alsoprovides greater monitoring ability,allowing administrators to keep tabs onwho is doing what around the network.

    Sharp also offers a selection of additionalsecurity options, including:

    Data Security Kit, which protects dataresiding on the hard drive using 128-bitencryption, and can be set to overwritethe encrypted data up to seven times.

    AirZIP FileSECURE, provides persistentsecurity to sensitive documents, everytime they are accessed.

    Maintenance/Maximum Duty Cycles:

    The Sharp AR-M700 has an advertised

    maximum monthly duty cycle of 300,000pages, which puts it on a par with mostcompeting units. The main consumableitems, namely the drum, fuser unit anddeveloper unit, are all advertised as lastingup to 300,000 pages, meaning that at fullmonthly volume, that an extensive servicevisit will be required every month.

    Though smaller than some competing units,he touchscreen control panel of the Sharp

    AR-M700 is very crisp, with the highesolution display making text and imagesasy to read.

    The touchscreen control panel cannot belted, which means that it may be harder for

    wheelchair users to access the deviceompared to some rivals with a tilting panelesign.

    The menu system is easy to navigate. Due to

    he smaller screen, there are more menuevels than found on some rival units.

    Sharp advertises a first page out time of 3.9econds with a warm-up time of only 120econds, which for a device over 60ppm, putshe Sharp AR-M700 among the fastestevices out of the gate.

    Productivity is further enhanced by the singleass, duplex scanning document feeder

    which is able to scan double-sided images atp to 76ipm. This could give Sharp AR-M700

    sers considerable productivity advantagesersus devices with the more traditionaleversing document feeders when double-ided original are copied. The reason for thiss that the job will be scanned into memoryaster on the single-pass scanning Sharp AR-

    M700 than the slower reversing documenteeder alternatives, which have to flip overach page and re-feed the second side backver the single scanner unit.

    This scanning speed advantage allows SharpAR-M700 users to return to their desks with

    he originals and carry on with productivework.

    Also, in addition to being slower, reversingocument feeders are also more prone to

    misfeeds than the straight paper path designf the Sharp AR-M700.

    The Sharp AR-M700 is able to queue asmany copy jobs as its memory can handle.This gives the device a copier concurrencyadvantage in busy copy environments overseveral competing units, which have a finitenumber of copy memories.

    The range of copy jobs that can be carried outon the Sharp AR-M700 is extensive, with a

    wide range of finishing options including multi-position stapling, hole punching and saddle-stitch booklet making.

    There is also an optional post processinsertion unit which allows users toincorporate pre-printed material, such as colorcovers, that would otherwise be damaged bythe high temperature of the fuser unit.

    Tandem Copy:

    The Sharp AR-M700N (print enabled)

    includes tandem copy capability as astandard feature. This is achieved throughconnection of two Sharp AR-M700 devicesvia the Ethernet port. The tandem copyprocess operates with one of the two copiersbecoming the slave, and one the master. Thetandem copy link is set up using the residentweb server application.

    The Sharp AR-M700s network printing (whichomes as standard on the 700N and as anption on the 700U models) is powered by a4-bit 525MHz processor. The processorhares the standard 128MB RAM and 40GBard drive with the copier function.

    Ethernet, USB 2.0 and parallel connectivityre included as standard.

    For greater security, the network interfaceard can be programmed to only provideccess to the device from specified IP/MAC

    ddress PCs on the network.

    Within the standard printing package userset PCL5e and 6 printing. PostScript 3rinting is an optional extra upgrade item

    which, in addition to opening up access to theevice to Macintosh users, also adds thebility to submit TIFF and PDF files directly tohe controller through a drag and dropunction.

    The layout of the PCL6 and PostScript 3rivers are identical, with the addition of a few

    PostScript-specific features within theAdvanced tab including the added ability toet screen frequency and angle, mirror imagend job compression levels.

    The similar operation of the drivers meanshat users who switch between the two drivershould have no difficulty during the transition.

    Both drivers are well laid out with a graphicalob summary on the left side of each tab.

    Useful features include carbon copy, which

    llows the user to create up to threedditional sets of any document fromifferent paper sources. This is a noveleature not provided on rival devices,ompanies, for example, who send outocumentation to clients to create threeiscernable copies of any paperwork. One isept for the companys own records, while thether two are sent to the customer; one to be

    signed and returned, and the other for thecustomer records.

    Paper Selection Options:

    Document production options are good on theSharp AR-M700, with users able to specify aaper source or type for each page within aocument. In addition to being able to specifyhe paper source, users can also choose

    whether to print on one side, both sides, oreave the sheet blank. The settings can betored for later retrieval.

    While there is the ability to specify tabs within job, there is no method of specifying tab text

    n the fly (a useful feature available on someompeting devices). This means that tabs

    must be created and stacked in a paperrawer before the print run. Sharp advised ushat a software utility is being developed forater release with the product will includextensive on the fly tab-publishingapabilities.

    Overlay Options:

    Within the advanced tab is the option to useverlays. Overlays are similar to watermarks,

    ut allow the user to save a backgroundmage rather than just a line of text that islaced behind the printed text.

    The overlay function can be used as a basicorm/variable data utility, allowing users toave a common background theme, such as mailing design or standard form, as anverlay.

    To create the overlay, a user simply prints theackground/form and selects the Create

    Overlay function within the driver. The user is

    ble to give the overlay a name. The overlayreation process itself was not well explained,ut still did not take long to master.

    The overlay file is stored on the device hardrive. To merge a print job with the overlayle, the user simply selects the overlay filerom the list in the driver, as illustrated in themage at bottom right.

    Tandem Print:Sharp includes tandem printing within itsstandard print function (obviously requiringtwo print-enabled devices). The job is sent tothe master tandem device, which splits the

    job and sends the data file to the slavetandem device with instruction on how manysets to reproduce.

    Bandwidth:

    Network bandwidth on the Sharp AR-M700sPCL6 driver was among the most efficient weave seen to date.

    Documents created using standard wordrocessing applications such as Word and

    Word Perfect were ripped down into smallles, and multi-set jobs

    were collated correctly,maintaining the smallingle set file size even

    when using thepplications collationunction.

    Graphic files were alsoandled efficiently, with

    Acrobat files andPowerPoint presentationocuments bothroducing low file sizes.

    Direct TIFF/PDF Printing:

    Within the upgrade price of the PostScript 3river, users also get the added benefit ofirect PDF and TIFF printing, which ischieved by opening the resident web serveror the device, selecting the direct printingtility and browsing to the PDF/TIFF file inuestion.

    This means that instead of having to submitTIFF and PDF files to one of other of therinter drivers (where the file is converted into PostScript or PCL print file and sent to theevice), users can submit PDF and TIFF files

    irectly to the controller as raw data.

    This has historically offered both productivitynd bandwidth advantages due to processingme and increase in file size involved inonverting these graphic file formats into printles.

    However, as PCs become more powerful, theprocessing time is being cut dramatically, withthe time involved in opening the resident webbrowser, browsing to the file and sending thePDF/TIFF file directly to the print controlleroften taking as long as simply opening the fileand sending the job to print by traditionalmethods. Furthermore, PCL print drivers in

    Windows XP are alsomuch more efficientat handling thesegraphic files with

    virtually no increaseseen between theoriginal PDF files andthe PCL print fileequivalent.

    There is still anbandwidth advantageto sending files asdirect PDF files

    versus PostScript 3 files. The 10-pageAcrobat PDF file used in the above bandwidthtest was ripped into a 3.46MB PostScript 3

    file, versus its original 1.47MB file size as araw PDF file.

    This may result in some productivityadvantages due to the smaller file size thathas to be sent across the network, and thenprocessed by the print controller.

    With the optional network scanning upgrade,he Sharp AR-M700 becomes an efficientocument distribution solution, giving usershe ability to convert hard copy documentsnto electronic files (TIFF or PDF) and sendhem to a variety of locations.

    ocations types are:

    Scan to email - individual or groups;

    Scan to Folder - routes files to a specificfile location on the network - restricted toSMTP Windows-based network locations;

    Scan to FTP - routes files to FTPlocations, expanding the range of networklocations to include Macintosh and Unix;

    Scan to HDD - sends documents to localdevice hard drive location.

    With the optional fax module, the range ofcanning options increases to include scan tonternet fax and scan to fax.

    Users can select multiple destinations within aingle scan job, called group sending. Groupsan comprise of a mix of email addresses,nternet fax and fax numbers, or FTP and

    SMTP folder locations, but not a mix of folder/FTP and email/fax addresses.

    For added security, Sharp has included thebility to restrict access to the scanningunction to only those users who can providen authenticated network ID and password.

    With the printer administrator utility,dministrators can also keep a track of allcanning carried out throughout the company,atisfying one of the data security measures

    within the Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA and otherata protection acts.

    LDAP Support:

    To facilitate efficient and accurate addressntry, the Sharp AR-M700 includes supportor LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access

    Protocol) servers. With LDAP support, userso not have to maintain individual addressooks on each Sharp AR-M700 around the

    network, and can instead rely upon thecentral company address book, which shouldbe easier to keep up to date than lots ofindividual fax and scan to email devicesscattered around the building.

    To access the LDAP address list, userssimply enters the first few characters of anaddress using the QWERTY keypad on thetouchscreen control panel, and the devicesearches the LDAP address list for matcheswhich appear on the touchscreen (seebelow).

    Personalizing Email Messages:

    To ensure that the recipient knows an emailhas come from a trusted source, the Sharp

    AR-M700 allows users to select their ownemail address from the sender list, rather thanhaving the email arrive from a digital MFP. Inaddition, they can also add a message andsubject line, plus name the file attachment.

    AirZIP FileSECURE:

    To expand its document security portfolio,Sharp has teamed up with AirZIP to provide more secure method of sending/sharingcanned documents.

    With AirZIP FileSECURE, security isersistently applied to electronic content

    wherever the content may go and every timehe content is accessed.

    Access restriction is achieved by wrapping a

    ecurity tag around the f ile when distributinghe document using FileSECURE Author.

    To send files with AirZIP security from aSharp MFP, a security profile for theocument is first created using the

    FileSECURE Manager and associated withhe Sharp MFP, or group of MFPs. When theser selects the ImageSEND button on the

    MFP control panel, they will be see the AirZIProfile button.

    To open the file, recipients must have the free

    FileSECURE Reader application (available atwww.AirZIP.com) loaded on their system.This in itself may cause issues for someompanies which restrict users downloadingpplications.

    To open a secured file, the recipient must benline, which again can cause issues for

    mobile users. The reason for this is that theFileSECURE Reader applicationommunicates with the senders internet-ased FileSECURE server. The user entersheir username and password (see top

    creenshot). The FileSECURE server thenhecks the security access that has beenssociated for the user.

    User names and profiles are set up using theFileSECURE Manager utility.

    The Sharp AR-M700 comes standard with thebility to store documents on its 40GB hardrive.

    The amount of space allocated to documenttorage is actually 16GB (which Sharp saysan store up to 20,000 pages). The reason forhis is that the hard drive is partitioned torovide the dedicated document storageacility while maintaining a large storage

    medium for fonts, forms, overlays, printpooling, electronic collation and other

    memory requirements.

    The document storage utility on the SharpAR-M700 is well laid out, with a mainirectory and custom directories.

    The main directory is a central resource areahat everyone can access, while the customirectory allows users to set up individualolders within the storage area. These foldersnd documents can be password-protected torovide greater document security.

    By providing a sub-folder system, documents

    an be better organized to make findingpecific files easier than on some competingnits which just offer a general file storageacility that forces users to search throughvery file to find the document they require.

    Documents can be stored in a folder fromither the copy control panel (hard copy) orrom the desktop (electronic file). Files can beiven a specific name and have a user name/umber attached to them for easier retrieval.

    There is no ability to merge multiple stored

    obs, a feature available on some competingnits.

    There is the ability to reprint documents fromhe desktop, using the resident web server.

    Documents can also be pulled back to theesktop as TIFF or PDF files for archiving/ack-up purposes.
