  • How do sharks find their food?http://www.flickr.com/photos/suneko/181497874/

Islands provide good habitat for sharks.

*Food island reefs and rocky shoals are perfect habitats for fish of all sizes, which also happen to be food for many sharks.Shelter those same reefs and shoals provide shelter for sharks when needed.Nooks and crannies in the reef provide excellent protective places for sharks to lay eggs or give birth to their young. (Different sharks reproduce in different ways).**Cartilagenous skeletons increase the flexibility of the animal, making it a faster swimmer. Sharks are cartilagenous fish. Other fish are not cartilagenous, and are therefore in other classes.*Nictitating membranes are a type of membrane that can be drawn across the eye like a third eyelid, that protects and moistens the eye while maintaining visibility*Leopard sharks belong to the family of hound sharks. There are about 40 species of hound sharks *Leopard sharks are a genus of hound shark that eats mollusks and crustaceans*Leopard shark has a species name that references its rounded teeth (they are blunt to crush shells for food).Leopard shark= common nameTriakia semifasciata = scientific name (italicize scientific names) *What kind of food do you think sharks eat?We already know that leopard sharks eat mollusks and crustaceans.*Sharks dont all eat large mammals and fish! Some sharks even eat plankton.*What marine mammals do sharks eat?SealsDolphinsSea lionsManateeswhales*Sharks have excellent senses, which make them efficient top predators. They have keen senses of sight, hearing and smell. In addition, they have a lateral line that is sensitive to pressure, and electroreceptors (ampullae of lorenzini) that sense the presence of the electrical fields that all living things emit.*
