Welcome to Sharjah

Opening Message

This fourteenth edition of the official magazine of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority highlights the emirate as a unique tourist destination. Future issues of the quarterly magazine will continue to tell Sharjah’s magical story, to explore its secrets and share its treasures.

Summer is a lively time in Sharjah, whether shopping in our ultramodern malls or old-world souks, perusing the fascinating heritage exhibitions in our many museums, or enjoying the emirate’s superb family attractions.

Welcome to a special summer edition of Sharjah, My Destination, in which we explore the wealth of opportunities there are in Sharjah to be entertained, educated and enriched, both indoors and outdoors.

Summer is a lively time in Sharjah, whether shopping in our ultramodern malls or old-world souks, perusing the fascinating heritage exhibitions in our many museums, or enjoying the emirate’s superb family attractions. During this period comes Ramadan and Eid, bringing evenings of social connection to our community, and a welcoming spirit that makes this a wonderful time to visit Sharjah.

We at the SCTDA are proud to have recently organised the Sharjah Tourism Excellence Awards, in which we celebrated the calibre of Sharjah’s tourism and hospitality sector. Sharjah is home to some of the world’s most famous hospitality brands, including luxury five-star hotels, as well as top-quality homegrown contributions to the leisure industry that make this unique emirate a world-class destination.

With all of this to offer, it is no wonder that Sharjah is a popular destination to visit during summer, and the emirate’s profile as an international tourism destination is ever growing. Visitors are drawn to the safe, family-friendly appeal that is fundamental to Sharjah's community values.

We look forward to welcoming even more visitors over these months to this hub of culture, hospitality and community.

hours gives way to a sense of celebration and community as both Muslims and non-Muslims come together to feast, socialise and connect as friends.

Indeed, this feeling of community, charity and generosity is more pronounced during the sacred month than at any other time of the year. That’s one of the things that make Ramadan a truly special time to visit Sharjah. Each year, this enchanting emirate, which is well-known for preserving the culture and traditions of

The holy month of Ramadan is the most special time of the year in the Islamic calendar. For Muslims, it is a period of reflection and devotion, a time to celebrate the most dearly held values of faith, family and heritage. For those of different religions, Ramadan is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Islamic heritage and culture. This is especially true in the evenings during Iftar – the breaking of the fast – when the quiet, reflective mood of the daylight

its past, hosts a selection of educational and entertaining events. It’s the perfect time for visitors to learn more about local culture and for residents to see the city at its best. Previous years have seen notable scholars give invigorating educational lectures on Islamic faith and the spirit of Ramadan, in both Arabic and English. In addition, as you would expect from a city with such a thriving creative scene, past Ramadan celebrations have also included events promoting the local arts, such as painting, calligraphy and poetry.

During the holy month, the welcoming spirit of Sharjah can be felt even more strongly than usual throughout the emirate. Some of the most popular areas for tourists and residents become livelier than ever, and one of the best places to visit is Al Qasba.

Ramadan and Eid Fair 2013The Ramadan and Eid Fair 2013 takes place from 18 July to 10 August at Expo Centre Sharjah. Now in its 27th year, you don’t want to miss this shopping extravaganza, which draws thousands of visitors from all over the region. Not only is it a great place to bag a bargain, you’ll also have a chance to enjoy a huge range of entertainment including cookery demos, fun rides, magic shows and traditional performances.

During the holy month, Sharjah residents and visitors alike experience a deep sense of community, family and faith.

IftarThe breaking of the fast at Maghrib (sunset) is when Sharjah comes alive during Ramadan and there are many places to enjoy Iftar feasts across the emirate. Al Qasba's plethora of canalside restaurants and cafes are buzzing with joyous revellers, as are those at Al Majaz Waterfront overlooking Khalid Lagoon. Sharjah's souks and shopping malls, including Sharjah City Centre, Mega Mall and Sahara Centre, are also hives of action for all the family – places where friends and relatives come together for the special Ramadan evenings.

Throughout the year, this cultural hotspot with its picturesque surroundings and quaint cafes, is a major draw, and during Ramadan it is particularly popular, as educational shows and cultural entertainment are put on display to the delight of the enthusiastic crowds. And it’s not just Al Qasba that comes alive during the holy month. Everywhere you go in Sharjah, whether you’re strolling along the Corniche, admiring Khalid Lagoon or visiting the museums, you’re sure to be caught up in the spirit of culture, community, friendship and faith.

Ramadan & Eid Al Fitr 2013 Ramadan is expected to

begin this year on 10 July, following an announcement by The Sharjah Planetarium.

Eid Al Fitr is expected to be around 9 August.

Nurturing A Culture Of Communication Sheikh Dr Sultan encourages cross-cultural connections in the community.

His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has continued to demonstrate his dedication to promoting the exchange of ideas and communication between cultures and communities during recent events.

His Highness made an exciting appearance at the recent Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival, held at Expo Centre during April and May. There, he demonstrated his support for such culturally nurturing events by donating Dhs.2 million to participating publishing houses, as well as ordering the provision of more books to Sharjah's public libraries, cultural institutions and youth centres.

During the festival, Sheikh Dr Sultan spoke passionately about the importance of instilling a love of reading among children in order for the habit to be carried through into adulthood. The fostering of young minds is an issue important to His Highness, who is ever

mindful that children are the leaders of the future and must be exposed to a wealth of cultural experiences and encouraged to be open to ideas. It is as a result of this vision and leadership that Sharjah has maintained a strong reputation as a welcoming, open and enriching place.

Contributing to these cross-cultural connections, Sheikh Dr Sultan recently welcomed fellow philanthropist and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, an appropriate guest given Mr Gates' role in the facilitation of global communication. As it was his first visit to the emirate, Mr Gates was keen to learn more about the history of Sharjah and the UAE.

At the reception, His Highness spoke of the UAE community as a wonderful and highly successful mosaic - not only of a host of nationalities, races and religions, but also of a healthy mix of constructive politics, commerce and cultural development.

Leaders of Sharjah’s hospitality and tourism industries, senior government officials and dignitaries, and national media representatives gathered at a grand ceremony in April to honour achievement in Sharjah’s thriving tourism sector.

Leading the winners at the Sharjah Tourism Excellence (STE) Awards, hosted by Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, was Her Excellency Sheikha Budoor bint Sultan Al Qassimi, Chairperson of Shurooq (Sharjah Investment and Development Authority), who was presented with the ‘Tourism Personality of the Year’ accolade. This new award is aimed at honouring the pioneers of the tourism sector who have made a distinctive contribution to the success of our beloved emirate.

It was the fifth year for the coveted awards, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. Addressing the gathering, SCTDA Chairman, HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, stated that the

Awards Recognise Continuing Success Of Sharjah Tourism Sector

STE Awards are a tribute to the continuing success of the emirate's tourism sector, and are aimed at encouraging further excellence and improving the quality of services.

Al Noman attributed this impressive growth to the partnership and cohesion of its public and private sectors. “Sharjah has registered unique and successful landmarks of progress and human civilisation, from its heritage to arts and literature, and from ideas and culture. It is these strides of progress that have brought the emirate the well-deserved

honours of Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014 and Capital of Arab Tourism for 2015”, he said.

Al Noman also stated that the hospitality sector is the backbone of the tourism sector and has witnessed tremendous growth in recent times. “The number of Sharjah’s tourists surged to 1.73 million tourists in 2012, an increase of 11% over the previous year”. He emphasised that all this would not have been possible without the vision and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Sharjah's Tourism Profile Heightened In Europe

SCTDA Wins ‘Best Government Participant' At Korea Summit

A recent European roadshow highlighted the importance of cooperation and coordination between Sharjah’s government agencies and private sector organisations when it comes to boosting the UAE’s tourism sector on both regional and global levels.

HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, emphasised the particular importance of boosting economic and tourism links between the emirate and European nations, highlighting Germany in particular as a key tourism feeding market.

The region’s most important tourism industry event, the Arabian Travel Market which was held in Dubai in May, saw a record number of visitors at Sharjah’s impressive pavilion. The stand showcased the best of Sharjah as the emirate wrapped up an eventful exhibition that

After a remarkably successful pitch at several international exhibitions, Sharjah turned its attention to the massive and ever booming Gulf tourism market as the region gets ready for the long holiday season.

Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority undertook a series of roadshows in cooperation with Sharjah’s popular airline Air Arabia across several GCC countries, to promote the diversity and richness of Sharjah’s tourism experience.

The roadshow campaign kicked off with a presentation in Muscat, Oman, before

continuing to Kuwait City, and then onto Saudi Arabia, where Sharjah made a strong pitch to woo the Saudi tourism industry in Al Khobar and at the influential Riyadh Travel Fair. The focus in Riyadh was on families, as Sharjah's safe and friendly environment is appealing to Saudi visitors.

HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa,

The SCTDA was delighted to win the accolade of ‘Best Government Department Participant’ at the third UAE-Korea Economic Partnership Forum, held at the end of May. The award boosts links between Sharjah and South Korea as the emirate looks to attract more tourists from the Asian nation, and to increase investment in the tourism and hospitality sectors from the region.

In 2012, Sharjah welcomed over 85,000 visitors from Germany keen to sample the emirate’s many attractions and experiences, and there were

HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, SCTDA Chairman, noted that even though the number of tourists travelling from South Korea to enjoy Sharjah's attractions has increased, there is still immense potential to welcome even more visitors from that part of the world.

In 2012, Sharjah received over 227,550 tourists from Asia, representing 13 per cent of the total international visitor number.

The Beijing International Tourism Expo (BITE), which was held in June, was another success story for the SCTDA. The Expo, which was attended by more than 900 exhibitors from over 80 countries, gave Sharjah's tourism industry the opportunity to further penetrate the enormous Chinese market. Sharjah once again generated a great amount of interest from industry professionals from around the world, winning the 'Most Outstanding Pavilion' award. While Sharjah's increasing popularity as a tourism destination already straddles the expanding Asian market, links between Sharjah and China continue to grow.

SCTDA Chairman, HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman commented that the SCTDA and all members of the emirate’s delegation made the most of the opportunity provided by

more than 620,000 tourists from Europe as a whole. In the first quarter of 2013 alone, European visitors to Sharjah numbered more than 190,000.

Director General of the SCTDA, commented: “Sharjah’s economic and tourism relations with our Gulf neighbours are historically robust and have grown dramatically in recent years. The Gulf is one of our biggest tourism markets and the emirate receives hundreds of thousands of visitors from GCC states every year.”

the exhibition to bring out the beauty, diversity and uniqueness of Sharjah’s tourism experience, which has earned itself a special place in the crowded regional and global tourism market.

It was the perfect time for Shurooq to announce the Dhs.500 million development project on Sir Bu Nair Island. The project at the island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will include a 100-room five-star hotel with top of the range facilities.

Al Noman added that with investments pouring into Sharjah’s tourism and hospitality sectors, and with several new projects in development across the emirate, the tourism landscape is set to undergo profound changes for the better, creating greater economic opportunities at home and better facilities and services for international visitors.

Sharjah’s malls are friendly, fun places – not to just shop in, but to spend time in. And with a host of Ramadan offers and activities lined up, there’s every reason to make your summer mantra: “Shopping mall? Let’s do them all!” Here, it’s not necessarily about scale, it’s about service. Not solely about attracting the crowds, but also about offering you choice. Whether you’re looking to shop, dine or be entertained – or all three – there’s everything you could hope for here, and more. There are several malls in the emirate to sample, but here's the inside line on Sharjah City Centre and Sahara Centre, which both have some exciting news. Sahara CentreConveniently located on the main Sharjah to Dubai highway, the Sahara Centre is hard to miss. Its unique architecture features a tent and wooden beam roof, which casts a bright spacious feel across the four desert-themed areas inside: Dunes, Mirage, Palm and Wadi.

Some of the mall’s key anchor shops are brands that are known the world over, and are therefore favoured by residents and visitors alike. Entertainment here includes the massive Adventureland, as well as a six-screen Grand Cinemas multiplex showing the latest films.

There’s also a large, multi-cultural food court offering 32 different types of cuisine – something for every age, taste and budget – alongside seven cafes and three restaurants.

The Sahara Centre has just undergone major expansion. Its new East Atrium, now open to the public, has made the mall 60% bigger and added around 100 new shops – offering more choice for shoppers.

Ramadan is a time for celebrating many aspects of humanity, including understanding and respect for all cultures. But with Sharjah due to become the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2014, focus on this theme is growing all the time.

There are approximately 600 mosques in Sharjah, but Al Noor Mosque is often regarded as the most famous and most striking. During Ramadan, the celestial bodies and our day-to-day lives seem especially intertwined. It is an ideal time to head to the Planetarium at Sharjah Science Museum for a closer look at the world above.

Terrifically Scientific

There are two first class science attractions in the emirate: Sharjah Science Museum and Sharjah Discovery Centre. Putting them together creates the perfect day trip for the holiday period. And with a host of other hands-on exhibits, demonstrations and experiments to enjoy there too, it is a stellar day out for all the family.

Sharjah Science MuseumAs the UAE’s first interactive science and technology centre, Sharjah Science Museum absolutely delivers on its promise: to make science fun and to bring it to life, so it entertains, stimulates and

inspires us all, whether we’re a toddler or an adult.

The museum's Planetarium is understandably one of its most popular attractions. As with many other parts of the museum, one of the key reasons behind this is the entertaining and interactive talks and shows laid on by the friendly team. Put aside any notions of a conventional lesson: your guide will instead take you on a thrilling journey deep into the solar system. If you weren’t aware of it before, you’ll learn how much of astrology is rooted in Arabian history, including the names of stars, and you’ll be dazzled by the distances and time spans involved.

In the talk on the laws of physics, for everyday expectations will be turned on their head. A bunch of flowers becomes so brittle it shatters at a single touch, and a soft, bouncy rubber becomes as hard as stone. They’re memorable moments, and these are just two of many.

The Museum does a great job of catering for all ages – Children in particular will enjoy racing around the hands-on experiments and illusions, and marvelling at the hilarious and electrifying effects of coming into contact with the Van de Graaff machine. Even toddlers can unleash their curiosity, in their very own play area. Sharjah Discovery CentreA colourful 'scientific park', just a short drive outside the centre of the city, Sharjah Discovery Centre covers a spacious 3,800 square metres, and provides a whole host of wonderful activities for children in safe, supervised surroundings. If the Science Museum made learning fun, the Discovery

Sharjah Discovery Centre is an energetic, joyful place, in which youngsters can let their imaginations loose.

Centre makes everything fun.The focus here is more overtly on play and exploration, although there remains an underlying aim of teaching youngsters how the biological, physical and technological worlds impact our daily lives.

It’s an energetic, joyful place, in which youngsters can let their imaginations loose, and adults

can succumb to their inner child, even for just a little while! The ideal age range is probably up to around 13 years old, but rest assured there’s enough here to keep all the family entertained. As at the Science Museum, there’s even a soft play area for the very young.

The Centre is based around seven themed areas. These include Sports World, Body World, Water World, Build Town and Drive Town. In the latter, for example, a driving track with miniature cars offers kids an invaluable introduction to traffic rules and regulations.

In addition, there’s a children’s supermarket, bank, TV workshop and recording studio – plus the chance to put on wings and fly around the world. Children can also join craft clubs and watch science videos and TV programmes on subjects such as nutrition and nature. Well-trained and qualified staff help to make the Centre a relaxing place to be.
