Sharing your Moodle
Moodle (mini) Moot
Wellington, 2010
David Sturrock, NMIT
Two models
Single shared site – Learning on the Loop hosting 3+ schools (http://learningon.theloop.school.nz)
Moodle Networking (Mnet) – NMIT Online networked with multiple Moodle/Mahara sites (http://ecampus.nmit.ac.nz)
Learning on the Loop
• Established 2007 to support The Loop• Taster/collaboration site, relationships,
potential bridging to NMIT• Cheap LMS solution (share hosting costs)• 3 schools using as LMS, 2 more
considering• Approx 400 courses, 600+ active users
How it works
• Established usage policies• Implementation, admin & support• Create categories for each school• Single contact & category manager role• Account creation (manual, Loop SQL export),
MoE MLE project sponsoring SSO pilot• Theming, home page & myMoodle• Course enrolments – enrolments keys
Issues
• Navigation expectations• User management• Enrolment process• Lack of collaborative initiatives• Differing expectations for site wide settings• Costs of adding 3rd party modules and
major version upgrades
Future
• More schools & increase collaboration, exchange and inter-school PD/support
• Add other features (SMS linking, bulk enrolments)
• Link with other services (ePortfolio, repositories, Individual learning plans)
• Become a regional hub for independent Moodle sites
NMIT Online
• Small polytechnic, using since 2005• Approx 350 active courses;
– 210 web supported– 48 web enhanced– 38 fully online
• 1700 active users in 2010• Restructuring for 2011, including shedding
qualifications
TANZ
The TANZ MyLearn Network Pilot 2008
Creating a Flexible eLearning Network
Mnet overview• Allows sites to share authenticated users• Controls who can roam between sites and
what theme they see, share logs• Publish selected courses for enrolment• Local site enrols users on remote courses
as students, one by one*• Local site cannot assign users to other
roles on remote courses*

Improvements
• Documenting processes• Net admin role• Developments (1.9 & hopefully core 2.1)
– Role mapping– Role assignment via “shell” courses– Support for multiple MNet versions
• Possible future developments– Groups and grades
