FROM DOREEN BROWN, TITLE VII INDIAN EDUCATION SUPERVISOR
Dear Educators and Community Organizations:
I am delighted to present you with this seventh edition of ourSharing the SpiritCommunity Resource directory in
celebration of this years Alaska Native/American Indian Heritage Month! The individuals and groups listed in this
booklet have volunteered their time and talents to make presentations, answer questions, and share their Native
culture in your classroom. Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, all of the presentations listed here are
free during the month of November!
As you consider this directory, you will find that each presentation is correlated with specific Alaska Content
Standards, with suggestions for relevant curricular tie-ins. We are confident there is something for everyone! When
you find a speaker you would like to schedule, please submit a completed Community Resource Request form.
Schedules fill up quickly, so dont delay.
There are countless community members and organizations whose generous support have made this program
possible. Each consciously share in our collective responsibility to meet, and exceed, the academic, social, and
cultural needs of our students. Special thanks go to the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the CIRI Foundation.
We encourage each school to celebrate this special recognition of our Alaska Native and American Indian students,
teachers, and community members. For more information about local events this year, or to make tax deductible

quick tips for your classroom
You are joining hundreds of thousands of teachers nationwide as you learn, teach and
celebrate the heritages of Americas First Peoples!
Before a speaker visits your class:
Find the area where your speaker is from on a map.
Introduce key vocabulary words and concepts to your students.
Ask students to imagine what life is like where your speaker is from
Talk about respect as one of the most important values in all Alaska Native cultures.
Discuss how you will show respect for your guest.
On the day of the visit:
Have a student meet the speaker at the main office and escort them to your class.
Schools can be difficult to navigate if you are unfamiliar with their layout.
Have water and any requested materials readily available.
Do not leave the speaker alone in the classroom. They are a guest -- you are
responsible for the behavior and participation of your class.
After the visit:
Thank the speaker! Have students create cards or drawings to send to them.
Review the experience with students and tie the presentation in with other classwork
you are doing.
Visit the Anchorage Museum or Alaska Native Heritage Center. You can schedule a
visit through the Community Resources office.
Please complete an evaluation form and return it to the Community Resources office.

Started in 1972, the NYO Games, previously known as the Native Youth Olympics, provide
insight into Alaskas rich cultural heritage while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Events are based
on games and life skills of past generations of Alaska Natives played as a way to test their
hunting and survival skills, and to increase strength, endurance, agility, and the balance of
mind and body. Although the event origins are based on traditional Native activities, the
competition is open to all students from seventh to 12th grade, regardless of ethnicity. The
event has grown to include more than 69 participating schools.

James grew up in Nome and was mentored by many extraordinary Inupiat elders. He will
introduce students to Alaska Native cultures and languages, exploring what culture is and how
we can understand it. James will also explain differences in communication, including body
posture, eye contact, tone, empathy, and awareness. He incorporates short group activities,
asking students to explore their own cultures and identities and what they can learn from each
other. James asks that students arrive in class with an excellent participative and expectant
attitude - they will all have fun and learn cool stuff about each other!

Willy can do one of two presentations for your class. The first is an art project allowing
students to try their hand at skin sewing. Willy will bring garments that he has designed and
sewn to segue into discussions about the role of clothing in survival. Willys second
presentation focuses on ivory carving. Due to federal restrictions, students will not be able to
carve, but they will be able to see a demonstration and handle different carvings as Willy
guides them in distinguishing between mammoth, mastodon, and walrus ivory. He will segue
into a discussion of the subsistence practices involved in obtaining ivory, and the historical uses
of ivory by Iupiat peoples.
