It is possible for an ordinary-looking, 36-year-

old man who lacks confidence to win a popular

talent show?



The man you just saw is Paul Potts, an ordinary

English man. He works as a salesman in

Carphone Warehouse.

Due to his appearance, Paul Potts was always

bullied in his childhood. Therefore, only singing

could soothe his soul.

As he has quite a good voice, it seems to be hisonly strength.



As he grows up, Paul Potts dreamed to be aprofessional singer. However, no record label

companies were eager to sign contracts with him,

again, due to his appearance.

At his 28, Paul Potts was determined to sing opera

and hoped to be like Pavarotti. Even when

singing karaoke, he wore bargain tuxedoes and

still look like Pavarotti.



Therefore, by all means he learnt opera and

even went to singing contests, in order to win

cash prizes for going to Italy and seek advice

from Pavarotti.

Consequently, he had won a cash prize of

£8000.He spent them on opera lessons in Italy.

There was even one lesson where Pavarotti washis instructor.



As learning opera was very costly, and stage

experience was needed, in total Paul spent£30000 and left him with a huge debt. In spite of this, Paul Potts was optimistic that he

would get nearer to his dream through his perspiration.



Sadly, unfortunate events happened to Paul. In2003, his colon was in a severe condition and

was hospitalized.

After re-diagnosis, a 10-cm tumor was found onhis adrenaline gland. He was hospitalized again.



The tumor operation was very successful. It was

a pity that after recovery, Paul accidentally fell

off from his motorbike and broke his clavicle.His doctor advised him to take rests and

temporarily stop singing operas.

What should Paul do, then, while facing debtsand his health conditions..?



3 years passed and it comes to 2007， wherePaul Potts was already 36.

It still seems very far from his dream and he

struggled with whether to persevere or not.



By chance， he read an introduction of the

talent show ‘Britains Got Talent’.Paul Potts decided to apply for it as a last

opportunity. If he still failed, it might be better

for him to stay in his current job.



Paul Potts was hesitating whether to submit

the application form or not as he seriouslylacked confidence.

Ultimately, he flipped a coin and was then

determined to submit the form.



On 9/6/2007， Paul Potts was finally on thestage he had been working so hard for,taking

part in the 1st audition of’Britains Got

Talent’.It only took 5sec to walk from the back to the

front stage, but it took Paul 8 years to do so.

He must perform his best before three critical

judges and more than 2000 picky audience.

Could he pass the test?



Let’s review how Paul Potts looked like at the

audition:

Short and fat,

wore a cheap old suit which was a bit unfit;

Sticky hair gel and nervous…



Afterwards, miracle was born.Paul Potts passed the 1st audition and all to the

finals.In the finals, Paul Potts stunned the crowd with

the extract Nessun dorma from the opera

’Turandot’ and won the competition. He wasawarded with a £100K prize and a record label

contract that worth $100K. He was also invited

to perform in the Royal Variety Show in before

Her Majesty the Queen.



Miracle did not stop here.

Later on, Paul Potts published his first album’One Chance’. The new album was per-ordered

till stockless albeit it was not yet on shelves. It

ranked 1st on British albums sales for consecutive 3 weeks, totalling over 550000

albums.

Paul Potts was therefore the 1

st

singer to be the1st one ranking 1st on the albums sales list when

publishing his 1st album.



Touched? Envy? After reading thestory of Paul Potts？

I was deeply touched by Paul Potts.

From his voice， I was like hearing his yelling

to those despising him – ‘I am indomitable and

would fight till the end for my dream!’



However, nothing can defeat usif we stand. We may still win ifwe stay on the stage, despitemomentary failure.

We can all do what Paul Potts can do.

Have we all fought till the end for our fights, justas what Paul Potts did?



It was a pity that though weowned dreams like Paul Potts and had

fought for it, we gave up when we face inevitabefrustrations. We also soothe ourselves that God

decides all and live up another dream instead.

This became a vicious cycle.

And ultimately, the dream became smaller and

smaller, and eventually vanished.



To all those facing adversities, I sincerely hope
