By now many of you have broken your New Year’s Resolutions. I know I have. But the New Year is still in front of us. We will be opening up the fifth village at Sharing Meadows in early January. The official dedication will be in late spring when the weather is better. With the addition of the new village, expenses of the residential program have increased about 20%. We have our own fiscal cliff! But God is loving and caring. He has shown us that what we are doing here at Sharing Meadows is in His plan. The eagerness of the new villagers to enter into this loving community is truly a joy to behold. May this year fill you with health and joy and the realization that God truly cares about you through thick and thin! Happy New Year! SHARE FOUNDATION WITH THE HANDICAPPED P.O. tHougHts froM tHe executive directorBy Kathleen Kelly

When I began working for Share Foundation, my first responsibility was summer camp. I recruited volunteers for the staff, scheduled campers, purchased supplies and took care of all the other details that go into having a successful program. I becameacquainted with hundreds of people – dedicated volunteers, campers and their families and many of these acquaintances havebecome friends. Camp was always a joyful experience that the campers eagerly anticipated each year and the only sad notewas at the closing ceremony each week because the campers knew they wouldn’t be back for an entire year.

That issue was resolved when we built our present camp building at Sharing Meadows and the mini camp weekends began.Just like in the movie “Field of Dreams” we found that “if we build it, they will come.” We had the building and the people– volunteers and campers – came. Response was tremendous and month after month we had plenty of people to help keepcamp running smoothly. Sadly, that response has slowed and we no longer have enough volunteers.

Due to the increasing difficulty of recruiting volunteers for camp, we have made the difficult and disappointing decision tocancel the spring mini camps. Our camp coordinator, Sandy Furman, has worked long and hard recruiting nurses, cooks andcounselors yet often she struggles to line up enough people to adequately staff the camp. Hundreds of contacts – phone calls, emails and letters – are made and some months she needs to send out last minute pleas for volunteers. We simply can’tcontinue doing this month after month and need to re-evaluate our efforts. When the St. Timothy Center was constructed in1995, there was a tremendous interest in holding monthly camps and the response from volunteers was strong and steady but, unfortunately that response has waned over the years where it has become increasingly difficult to attract the volunteers thatwe need.

We will concentrate our efforts on recruiting for summer camp and if we are successful, we will look into re-instating the minicamp weekends in the fall. If you have ever considered volunteering for camp, please give us a call. Camp is an enrichingexperience that means so much to so many but we can’t do it alone. We also ask you to say a prayer asking God to send usenough volunteers so our camp program can continue for the many campers who truly love the experience.

KnigHts of coluMbusThe following donations were received this past month from the Knights of Columbus from their annual Tootsie Roll drive.

sHare the fun variety sHowby lynnette fleming, creator and director

The many talents of the villagers of Sharing Meadows wereshowcased when they proudly presented their first “Share theFun Variety Show.” The St. Timothy Center was filled as 90guests enjoyed a wide variety of talent ranging from group andindividual singing, choreographed dancing, jokes and more. Some of the performers wore costumes matching their chosentalents. This magical time of music and laughter was likeopening a window to the villager’s hearts and you would havethought they had played their parts a thousand times before!

A few of the highlights included a worthy of an award dramaticperformance of two characters from “Pride and Prejudice”presented by Kelsey; the appearance of Frankenstein charactersJoe, Craig and Tim B. as they “frightened” the audience withtheir antics and then danced to the “Monster Mash.” Laurashowed her comedian side with her knock knock and other jokes. Colin used sign language while the audience stood andsang along to “God Bless America” and magician Patti K. amazed everyone with her magic card trick. Tim H. delightedby keeping his basketball moving to music in true Harlem Globetrotters style; and Colin, Mike, Carol, Tim H., Tina Jo,Matt, Bob and Steve dressed in their favorite sports teams and sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” while some threwtheir caps high in the air at the end of their song. David entertained with a tambourine, keeping the beat to theaccompanying music; Carol did a beautiful job of singing; and Tina Jo’s 50’s style poodle skirt added to the atmosphere asshe twisted to Elvis music along with Chris, David, Laura and Lynnette. Dawn, dressed as her favorite character, SnowWhite, sang along with Lynnette and Susan. Tonya, appropriately dressed as a pumpkin, did a special reading of “Being aChristian is Like Being a Pumpkin” followed by “Cheetah Girl” Elizabeth singing with her favorite group. Patrickperformed an Irish jig, taught to him by his Irish grandmother. Susan sang like a heavenly angel as she played the melodyto “The Potter’s Hand” on her keyboard.

All of our guests were energized by the performances and appreciative of our handmade programs. Special thanks to allwho attended and to fellow stewards Susan, Patti and Joe for helping to make our first talent show an unforgettable memory. And thanks to our variety show, Susan & I are spiritually inspired in knowing exactly where God wants us to be.

The entertainers had as much fun as the audience!

retreat to sHaring MeadowsIf you belong to an organization looking for a quiet, beautiful site in the country for a meeting or a retreat, rememberSharing Meadows. The rural land here is beautiful in every season. We can offer you the lovely great room of theForcey House (when not being used by families of the other abled) with large windows overlooking our beautifulgrounds, complete with a fireplace, a grouping of comfortable couches and a kitchen. If your group is larger, St.Timothy’s Center is also available when the camps are not in session. Both facilities are available for overnight staysas well. Call the office at 219-778-2585 for availability and come to experience the peacefulness of Sharing Meadows.

a darK and storMy nigHtEditors note: Susan Predoehl is a Lutheran Deaconess who has served as a steward at Sharing Meadows for the past year. She wrote this piece about one of the weekly bible study sessions that she has helped to facilitate during her time here. Shewill be leaving us to move on to other ventures and we ask God to bless her in her new ministry.

The Lord is my light and salvation; whom shall I fear? Psalm 27:1

A sleepless night for many people, fatigued after hours of strong wind. Dark and dreary, with a hint of heaviness after recenthurricanes and an East Coast fire. The community of other abled adults and their stewards sit together in a dark room.

They have gathered for a bowl of hot soup and Bible study. Flashlight beams serve as reminders of God’s light and healingpresence. With music and scripture and, seated so close together as to be aware of one another’s breathing, they discusswords of hope. One villager speaks: “even in the dark, we do not need to be afraid!”

They grasp one another’s hands. People give thanks for God’s light and pray for those affected by dark times. The prayercomes: “Dear Jesus, in the darker nights of our lives, warm us with the Light of your presence! Amen.”

MeMorialsMemorials are a special way to honor

the memory of a loved one or celebrate aspecial occasion for ourselves, our family,or our friends. We are grateful for allmemorial donations, large and small, thatare received but we want to remind youthat our policy is that thank you letters andacknowledgement cards are not sent forany memorials received that are less than$10.00 per name. They will be printed inthe GOOD NEWS but no cards or letterswill be sent. Due to the increasing cost ofpaper, postage and time to send cards andletters, it is not good stewardship to spendthe donations you have entrusted to us tofill mailboxes with mail.

Memorial donations of $10.00 or moreper name will continue to be handled witha thank you letter, acknowledgement tofamily and listing in the newsletter. If youdo not require a thank you letter, pleasemark the envelope so that we can codeyour account and we can save the cost of aletter and use the funds for our programsfor other abled people. Thank you for yourunderstanding!
