Background

Shaping Davos@Stanford is an interactive event on innovation and design thinking for social impact. It includes as series of sessions aimed to innovate around thorny real-world challenges, while bolstering participants’ creative confidence through design thinking. Shaping Davos@Stanford is organized by the Palo Alto Global Shapers and is hosted at the d.school, Stanford University. The event is part of Shaping Davos, an initiative that connects 40 cities around the world with the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. These events feed and extend the conversations going on in Davos. The Global Shapers Community is one of the multi-stakeholder communities at the World Economic Forum. It includes young leaders under the age of 30 who have great potential for future leadership roles in society.

Format and focus Shaping Davos@Stanford will bring together Silicon Valley experts from the for and non-profit sectors, including the technology sector, the arts, the media and academia. Teams of participants will be created. They will generate novel ideas to feed selected projects from the Silicon Valley which are tackling social issues of access. The focus is on access to resources such as education, food, the Internet and information, as channels for equal opportunities. This is increasingly relevant in a world of increasing social inequality. The selected projects include the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, the Street Code Academy and Food Shift. The solutions designed at the event are feeding directly into the selected projects, for direct application.

Program Participants will convene at the Stanford d.school , on January 22nd. Teams will be created around a given design challenge which is tied to a specific existing project from the Silicon Valley. The challenges have been identified during six sessions held in the two weeks before Davos. Each team will apply basic elements of the design thinking process to explore potential solutions to the issue they tackle. Creative confidence and innovation for social impact will also be discussed during a live panel session in Davos, Switzerland, where the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting takes place. The panel will include speakers connecting from Davos, Stanford, Rome and other cities around the world.
