An Irish Christmas MornIn my mind I see a pictureOf a Christmas long agoWhere the stars are bright as silver And the trees are white with snowWhere a candlelight is burningIn a kitchen window smallBidding welcome to the stranger Wishing peace to one and all

O to walk again that well-worn pathOn the way to early MassAnd to clasp the hands of those I love -----Departed now alas!To see the holly green and redAll in the frosty dawnAnd to hear the chapel bells ring outOn an Irish Christmas morn

I recall old friends and neighboursKneeling in the chapel there I remember every greeting every smileAnd every prayer

‘Twas a time for celebrationFor a Saviour He was bornWho had brought to us salvationOn an Irish Christmas morn

Softly call the carol voicesEchoing across the foamAt their song my heart rejoicesFor I’ll soon be going homeGently now the snowflakes fallingEvery hill and vale adornAnd in memory once more I seeAn Irish Christmas morn

O to walk again that well-worn pathOn the way to early MassAnd to clasp the hands of those I love -----Departed now alas!To see the holly green and redAll in the frosty dawnAnd to hear the chapel bells ring outOn an Irish Christmas morn

by Tom Kearney

One of collection of poems written by Tom Kearney and published this month in a book called ‘That I May See’ which he has produced for the charity ‘Sightsavers’. About this charity Tom says:“For over 50 years Sightsavers has been restoring sight and supporting people who are irreversibly blind through education and training . They help people who need it most ---- those living in poverty in some of the world’s poorest countries .” Why not put this booklet on your list of gifts this Christmas . It will have a huge impact on someone’s life in the developing world . Last year (2007) 23 .2 million were treated for potentially blinding conditions and sight was restored to 244,909 people by Sightsavers working with partners .They are on sale in various outlets at a price of €10.00 or you can contact him direct on 061 364504. All proceeds from the sale of this booklet will go to support the work of Sightsavers International. A great stocking filler!

No doubt about it, belts are being tightened and it could be a tough one for families and businesses alike . I would encourage you to support your local businesses and

the advertisers in this issue .However hard recession, credit crunches and harsh budgets have made life difficult for us all, there is always someone worse off . You will find details inside of the Operation Christmas Child scheme . Can I also draw your attention to a new charity poetry book (see opposite page) which has been produced to support the charity Sightsavers International . It would make an ideal stocking filler and can be purchased at several outlets or you can buy it direct from the author .Have a happy and healthy Christmas .Judith Kearney Publisher

ST SENaNS r.F.c.Birth of a teamIn the early to mid 1960’s junior rugby was played in Shannon under the guise of the “Estates Cup”, which was a competition held between the factories which had set up in the Shannon Industrial Estate . The competition proved very

popular and a meeting was organised in 1974, where it was decided that a team should be formed locally . The first president elect was Cyril Kiely and the first team captain was Eamon Dooley, the next step was to gain affiliation to the IRFU . To achieve this, the team had to be proposed and seconded by two existing teams; the teams that filled this requirement were Young Munsters and Garryowen . The application was successful and in 1974 St Senans R .F .C . was formed .The Early YearsIn the development years of the club success was very limited; it was the late ‘70s before the first junior trophy

was won, this being the Culligan Cup . Following this there were many lean years for the club, until in the 1998/99 season in Thomond Park they won the Gleeson League; this momentous occasion

was witnessed by a large supporter base from around the area . In the same year the team also won the Junior Development League, this resulted in promotion for the team to the Munster Junior League Division Three . That season was to become the most successful to date in the clubs history as they also went on to win, the Kiely Cup, the Culligan Cup, and finished runners up in the Webb Cup .A New DecadeIn the 1999/2000 season the team defeated Mallow RFC, in the final game of the season, to gain promotion to the Munster Junior League Division Two . They held their position in this league for the following season, and after defeating St Mary’s RFC in the final game of the 2001/02 season gained promotion to Munster Junior League Division One . They held their position in this league until;

following the loss of a number of their more experienced players they were relegated in 2006/07 back to Munster Junior League Division Two . Following this the team went through a period of transition, with a number of younger players came up through the ranks, and they consolidated their position in the league .

The team was to taste success again in the 2007/08 season when they won the Munster Junior Plate, beating Clanwilliam of Tipperary 7-3 in the final on 13/4/2008 .Players of the FutureSt Senans have a vibrant Age Grade and Mini Rugby Section, with teams competing from U8 up to U18’s . This section is run by experienced coaches who have completed mini and foundation courses run and accredited by the Munster Branch . Regular coaching/training sessions are held weekly at the clubs grounds, 6-14yrs on Sundays at 10:30 and 15-18yrs on Saturdays at 11:00 . New members will be made most welcome . In addition to its own coaches St Senans contribute to the funding of the Rugby Youth Development Officer, who visits local schools in the locality to introduce them to rugby and to introduce St Senans RFC to them as their local rugby club .Jimmy Slattery ParkFor many years St Senans played their rugby in Ballycasey

but this changed in Sept 2005, when “Jimmy Slattery Park” opened in Tullyvarraga, Shannon . The grounds were named in honour of a stalwart club member, Jimmy Slattery, whose vision it was for the club to have its own “home” . The land for this was purchased

from Shannon Development, two new pitches were developed and were ready for play in the 2005/06 season, this development was part funded with a grant from the National Lottery .Further to the development of the pitches the club then began phase one of their club house development which saw the opening of a new dressing room complex in Sept . 2006 . The second phase of this development, at some time in the future, will be the addition of a club house and bar/social area Thank YouSt Senans RFC would not be where it is to day, if it had not had great local support over the years . We must also thank the many local businesses for their continued support, especially our main sponsor “The Shannon Knights Inn” . St Senans would also like to acknowledge both DeBeers Diamond Club and the Wolfe Tones GAA club for opening up their facilities to us prior to the development of our own .If you would like anymore information or would like to join please turn up any Saturday or Sunday morning and you will be welcomed .

Santa will be arriving in Shannon on Saturday 6th December . His grotto will be in the mall outside the old Tesco this year and he is looking forward to meeting all the

boys and girls of Shannon . Look out for details of dates and times of when you can visit him closer to December .

Over the last ten years almost two million of the world’s most disadvantaged children have received a shoe box, enthusiastically packed with gifts from Ireland . The closing date for this year, to ensure the children receive their gifts for Christmas, is Tuesday 11th November . The drop-off point in Shannon is Curves in Elite Business Park, Smithstown . Just follow these five simple steps: 1 Find an empty medium-size adult shoe box . Cover the box in Christmas paper making sure that you wrap the lid and box separately . 2 Decide whether your gift will be for a BOY or a GIRL, and which age category, (use stickers printed above, and stick this to the outside of the lid (on the top right as you would a stamp on a letter) . 3 Fill the shoe box . Please don’t wrap any items individually or overfill your box .4 IMPORTANT Please enclose €3 or more in an envelope to cover admin and delivery costs . Cheques are preferred

OpEraTiON chriSTMaS chilD

for security reasons and should be made payable to Samaritan’s Purse . Place the envelope inside the box, but on the top of the gifts so that it is clearly visible when it is opened . 5 Secure the lid with an elastic band, and do not seal the box as it will need to be checked to ensure it meets customs requirements .Due to import regulations, all goods should be new or nearly new . Official exchanges are conducted on a bi-yearly basis but during the intervening months many personal visits take place as a consequence of friendships cultivated over the years . Visitors are received in homes in both communities, sharing in the activities and culture of the families with the opportunity to reciprocate the hospitality during return visits .A feature of the Twinning that has proven very successful are the exchanges that have taken place between second level schools in Shannon and Guingamp providing students and teachers with a valuable insight into the cultural and social nuances of both communities .The Shannon Twinning Association are anxious to build on the success of the relationship between the two communities and to this end would actively encourage organisations and individuals from Shannon to explore the possibility of becoming involved in the venture . The Shannon Twinning experience began on St . Patrick’s day in 1989 with an exploratory visit to the area by an advance party from the Town and Community of Guingamp in the north of Brittany . The visit, though a short one, prepared the foundation for the subsequent Twinning of the two communities resulting in the signing of a joint charter in Guingamp in 1990 . Although initiated by the respective town councils, the driving force behind the venture stems from within the two communities representing a broad variety of interests and personalities .

The local Family Resource Centre based at Respond Community Centre, Rineanna View, Shannon has set up a Homework Club .This is a new initiative which encourages primary school children to do their homework . It is the first time that the centre, which was set up eight years ago has organised an initiative like this and the feedback in the local community has been great .An evaluation was done with the children from our Activity Club which runs on Monday and Tuesday afternoons at the Family Resource Centre and from that evaluation the Family Resource Centre decided to run a pilot programme as it was the children themselves who saw the need for this facility . The Homework Club runs two afternoons every week, on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 .30pm-5 .15pm at the Family Resource Centre . On arrival, the children are provided with healthy snacks, after which they do their Homework and then play games . This ensures the project is a combination of education, health and leisure .It is funded by the Health Service Executive through the Traveller Health Initiative and is Co-ordinated by Barbara Molloy .Fifteen young children attend the club and other spaces could be made available if additional volunteers are recruited . The Homework Club is currently inviting volunteers to assist them in their activities .Anyone interested in helping out for a few hours each week should contact Barbara @ 061-707600 . Full training in childcare protection will be provided to volunteers .

ShaNNON archaEOlOgical & hiSTOrical SOciETYThe Shannon Archaeological & Historical Society has been in existence for over thirty years . It was founded by enthusiasts in the Shannon area with a passion for local history and archaeology . The Society continues to thrive and is one of the most active in the country .One of the earliest activities to emerge from the Society, was the publication of an annual journal called The Other Clare . Now in its 32nd year of publication the journal has progressed to become one of the most prestigious and respected publications of its type in the country .The Society’s programme is focussed on two main activities . During the summer months a series of outings and excursions are organised to places of interest both in Clare and neighbouring counties . The season usually begins with a weekend expedition to particular areas of

interest within the country . Society members have been seen meandering the slopes of Sliabh na mBan, manning the parapets of Roscommon Castle and exploring the

offshore delights of the Aran Islands .Throughout the winter months we go indoors for a series of lectures and presentations by visiting speakers and members of the society . The subjects covered are rich and diverse featuring themes from prehistory up to modern times and have included talks on

recent excavations in the Shannon area .The Shannon Archaeological & Historical Society is happy to encourage and welcome new members . As a member you will have the opportunity to engage with our natural and national heritage and help to influence its preservation and protection .For information on becoming a member or participating in any of our activities please contact the Secretary: Peter Wise, Tel: 065-6837570, Email: peter .wise .ie@gmail .com

a DaY iN ThE liFE OF ...Tom Downes has been living in Shannon since 1962. He has been totally blind since the age of 21. He was voted Blind Person of the Year in 19?? receiving his award from Mary Robinson, who was President at the time. He has two sons, Alan & Michael, and has recently been widowed. He lives alone with his Guide Dog, Brandon.

I get up at about 8:00am every morning depending on how well I slept the night before - unfortunately I am a bit of an insomniac so I often have restless nights . I go downstairs and let my dog, Brandon, out and then make some breakfast for us - usually porridge for me .I have been retired for the past few years from the

business I started in 1977, Capstan Components . My son took over the business when I retired and I occasionally help him out part-time . On the days that I am working I get dressed and head over to the Industrial Estate with Brandon . Brandon is a relatively new addition to my family . Unfortunately Guide Dogs can only work until they are about 10 years old and my last dog had reached retirement age earlier this year . The Guide Dogs start their training from birth . For the first year of their lives they live with volunteers who are known as ‘puppy walkers’ and they take them on daily walks and try to prepare them for their working lives . When they are a year old they go to the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind training centre in Cork, where the dogs are bred, and they spend 5 months in training . If at that stage the dog reaches the high standards needed to be a guide dog they then go on for another three months of advanced training . So Brandon is just over 2 years old now and we are slowly getting used to one another . It is difficult when a dog gets too old to work as you do become very attached to them . You are given the option of keeping the dog, or else the IGDB find a good home for the dog for its retirement . I haven’t been able to keep any of my dogs as my house is too small .Getting dressed in the morning can be a bit of a lottery when you can’t see colours . There is a device which I have which when pointed at a piece of clothing can tell me the colour, but it is not very reliable if a shirt is checked or multi-coloured . I recently bought a very handy device called Voxcom, which is basically a voice recorder . It comes with 100 label cards onto which you can record your voice and then you attach the cards to whatever you need to label . So I have lots of them hanging on the hangers in my wardrobe, and also on cans and jars in the kitchen cupboards . Before I

got the Voxcom, the only way I could tell what was in a can was by shaking it! The only problem can be matching a shirt to the correctly labelled hanger after washing . Another thing that I have which is very useful, is my mobile speech phone, which reads texts messages for me and also reads the caller ID .I do all my own washing, ironing and cooking, the only thing that is difficult is dusting and vacuuming . I am very lucky that my son, Alan, and daughter-in-law Diane live next door, so they help out with things I find difficult . Shopping can be a big problem and Alan helps me with that . After breakfast, if I am not working I take the dog for a walk . Brandon always walks on my left and is trained to avoid objects 2 feet to the right . The dogs are also taught to stop at the kerb . When they get to the other side of the road, they don’t stop but I know when to step up because I can feel the dog stepping up .I was born with Glaucoma and was severely visually impaired from birth but I went to mainstream school until I was 15 and then went to St Josephs School in Dublin for 2 years where I learnt Braille . Unfortunately I learnt it by sight instead of feel so when I completely lost my sight it was a fairly useless skill, as you need a lot of sensitivity in your fingers which I was never able to develop . When I was 21 the retina became detached in my better eye and shortly after that I lost sight in my other eye too . My first job was as a piano tuner in Rippen Piano Factory from 1962 to 1975, and when the factory closed I retrained in light engineering with FAS, and thereafter started my own business .After lunch, which I sometimes cook myself, although my daughter in law is very good and quite often cooks dinner for me, I like to listen to the television, radio or one of the many books that I get on CD to listen to - usually crime/adventure books . I go on holiday a couple of times a year with my two brothers and their wives . It is always nice to get away although it is very tiring for me because everything is new and it takes a while to work out the layout of where we are staying . I judge whether a place is nice and worth going back to by sounds, smells and of course, the weather .One of the biggest drawbacks of being blind is not being able to make eye contact . It is especially difficult when I am in large groups . I find it much easier to talk to people on a one to one basis .In the evenings I sometimes enjoy going to the pub for a drink with friends or with my son, my favourite tipple is Guinness, although I try not to eat or drink after 7 .00pm as I find that if I do, I have nightmares . After letting the dog out again, I am usually in bed by midnight and pray that I get a good nights sleep .
