Shang Hai International Settlement History

• It originally began as just a British Settlement, but after the Opium war, American French got involved and wanted some of Shang Hai. It took years of agreement, but soon the French backed out and the American and British named it the ‘Shang Hai International Settlement’

Shang Hai settlement History

• As more foreign powers entered into the treaty, their nationals also became administrators. It always remained mainly a British affair, until the late1930’s. Shang Hai always remained Chinese territory. The Shang Hai settlement ended in December 1941, when Japanese invaded Shang Hai and drove out the British. Shang Hai was returned to China.

Arrival of the British, Americans, and Europeans (19th century)

• At first when the Americans British and Europeans arrived in Shang Hai, they wouldn’t allow the local Chinese to live there. America wanted the same rights as the British and put up American flags threw out Shang Hai. This caused some riots, and eventually Chinese locals were allowed back into Shang Hai for better economical opportunities. Their rights with in Shang Hai were still limited, and you can see that by the Rules and regulations outside of the Garden’s.

The Bund

• Shanghai’s Bund, or also called ‘embankment” is a one-mile long historic district that is located on the western bank on the Huangpu river. During the early 1800’s, the bunds district was a British settlement on the northern outskirts of the ancient walled-city of Shanghai, and in 1854 the British district was merged with the American, and other foreign concessions to from the ‘Shanghai International Settlement’

The Bunds Agriculture

• The bund has a diverse mixture of European agricultural styles.

• Each of the Buildings used to have different purposes. For example there is the Union building, The great northern Telegraph Company Building, The China Merchants building, and many different banks from all over the world.
