shane strassberg's next basketball court locator app
TRANSCRIPT
Problem: Ball Players seek new courts and competition to conquer, but don’t know where
to find them.
Solution: An immersive smartphone app that lets players discover new courts, see who’s
already playing, and rebuild the culture and community of the
pickup game.
Initial Research5 Ball Players were interviewed for 10 minutes about their preferences for pickup basketball.
Their info helped create an affinity diagram to understand particular playing habits.
Initial Research
From there two personas were created to understand particular player habits involved in playing pickup basketball.
Project BriefsAfter creating personas, I wrote out a project brief with a proposed solution and further investigatory questions.

Problem statement
I am Baller Bob. I want to explore and discover new and exciting basketball courts around the city in order to meet new people and test my skills against different types of players and competition, but it is time consuming and not always reliable. This makes me feel discouraged.
Proposed solution to the problem
An app that allows Bob to input his current location and find new courts around the city with information about the level of competition and the most popular times people play there.
How this solution solves the problem
The app will have user generated info about the courts around the city, which saves Bob time and energy while providing him with the new competition he desires and new people he would like to meet.
Open Questions (for further investigation)
● Does Bob have a phone/tablet for his app? ● Can he invite his friends to follow him on the app? ● Can friends tap into his GPS to locate Bob at a particular court and vice versa? ● Can Bob post his “discovered” courts to other forms of social media? ● Can Bob check-in at a court enough times to become the “King of the Court?” ● Should a companion website exist in tandem with the app?

Problem statement
I am Particular Pete. I am trying to find the “right” basketball court to play on but the courts around my neighborhood don’t quite fit my criteria because mostly full-court games are played, they seem very competitive, and I don’t know any of the other players. This makes me feel intimidated and not want to play.
Proposed solution to the problem
An app that allows Pete to input his current location and search for particular courts that fit his criteria.
How this solution solves the problem
The app will have user generated info about the courts around the city and allow Pete to filter his particular interests regarding where and whom he wants to play; as well as the physical makeup of a court.
Open Questions (for further investigation)
● Does Pete have a phone/tablet for his app? ● Can he invite his friends to follow him on the app? ● Can friends tap into his GPS to locate Pete at a particular court and vice versa? ● Should a companion website exist in tandem with the app?
Rough SketchesI designed several sketches that would incorporate solutions to these player problems.
Further Paper Prototyping
After designing initial wireframes, user testing was conducted to determine users basic understanding of app functionality and feel.
