EARLY LIFE

•Born into a patriotic Jatt Sandhu family to Sardar Kishan Singh Sandhu and Vidyavati in the Khatkar Kalan village near Banga in the Lyallpur district of Punjab.

•His uncles, Ajit Singh and Swaran Singh, as well as his father were members of the Ghadar Party.•Went to Dayanand Anglo Vedic High School, an Arya Samajist school. •At age 13, Singh began to follow Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement.

Impact of Withdrawal of non-cooperation movement by gandhi

• Following Gandhi's withdrawal of the movement after Chauri Chaura violence.

• Singh, disgruntled with Gandhi's nonviolence action, joined the Young Revolutionary Movement and began advocating a violent movement against the British.

Joining the HRA• Started studying at the

National College in Lahore.• Became a member of the

organization Naujawan Bharat Sabha.

• Joined Hindustan Republican Association headed by Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan.

Lala Lajpat Rai's death and the Saunders murder

• SIMON Commission visited Lahore on October 30, 1928

• Lala Lajpat Rai led the protest against Simon Commission in a silent non-violent march, but the police responded with violence.

• Lala Lajpat Rai was beaten with lathis at the chest. He later succumbed to his injuries on nov 17,1928. Bhagat Singh, who was an eyewitness to this event, vowed to take revenge

Revenge of Lalaji’s death

• He joined with other revolutionaries, Shivaram Rajguru, Jai Gopal and Sukhdev Thapar, in a plot to kill the police chief Scott.

• Jai gopal mistakenly signalled on Saunders, the deputy suprintendent of police.

• They shot at him and killed him to avenge lalaji’s death

Bomb in the assembly• To oppose the

implementation of the Defence of India Act which gave more power to the police BHAGAT SINGH along with B.K DUTT threw a bomb on April 8, 1929. shouting “INQUILAB ZINDABAD”

Trial and execution• British came to know of his

involvement in the murder of J. P. Saunders. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were charged with the murder.

• Bhagat Singh decided to use the court as a tool to publicize his cause for the independence of India

The famous hunger strike

• He went on a hunger strike while in jail.

• The aims in their strike were to ensure a decent standard of food for political prisoners, the availability of books and a daily newspaper, as well as better clothing and the supply of toilet necessities and other hygienic necessitiesent on a hunger strike while in jail

Where as Bhagat Singh, son of Kishen Singh, resident of Khawasrian, Lahore, one of the prisoners in the Lahore Conspiracy Case, having been found guilty by us of offence under section 121 and section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and also under section 4 (b) of the Explosive Substances Act read with section 5 of that Act and with section 120-F of the Indian Penal Code at a trial commencing from the 5th May, 1930, and ending with the 7 October, 1930, is hereby sentenced to death. This is to authorise and require you, the said Superintendent, to carry the said sentence into execution by causing the said BHAGAT SINGH to be hanged by the neck until he be dead at Lahore on the 17th day of October, 1930, and to return this warrant to the High Court with an endorsement certifying that the sentence has been executed. Seal of the Judicial DepartmentI hear by certify that the sentence of death passed on Bhagat Singh has been duly executed, and that the said Bhagat Singh was accordingly hanged by the neck till he was dead, at Lahore Central Jail on Monday, the 23rd day of March, 1931, at 7 p.m., that the body remained suspended for a full hour, and was not taken down until life was ascertained by a medical officer to be extinct; and that no accident, error or other misadventure occurred
