Development Unit (ESDU).

ESDU is an interdisciplinary Research and Development (R&D) unit

specialized in sustainable agriculture, established in 2001 at the Faculty

of Agricultural and Food Sciences at AUB to promote collaboration on

sustainable development initiatives among departments at AUB and a

wide variety of other institutions and organizations undertaking related

activities. Since its inception, ESDU has managed to establish itself as

one of the major trend-setters in R&D in the MENA region, mobilizing

large research and development grants in Lebanon and the region

(more details at www.esdu-aub.org). Moreover ESDU has established

a strong base in rural sustainable livelihoods and participatory resource

management, and is involved in the creation of public-private

partnerships in order to enhance the operation of community-based

enterprises, drawing on the resources of a wide variety of donors such

as the World Bank, USAID, IFAD, IDRC, CDR, FAO,

UNCCD,UNEP and others. ESDU is increasingly acknowledged as a

success model in the institutionalization and regional ownership of

R&D efforts at the MENA level and is cited by the European Gateway

to Research and Innovation (CORDIS) as one of its regional links. In

2006 ESDU became the 7th

Center of RUAF (Resource Centers on

Urban Agriculture and Food Security) serving the MENA region.

In 2010, on the occasion of the 10th

anniversary celebration of ESDU, I

coordinated the organization of an international seminar under the title:

“Towards sustainable rural livelihoods in the Arab region: A decade of

mixed opportunities?”. In 2013, ESDU was selected to host the

regional network on knowledge management in rural areas

“KARIANET”. In 2016, ESDU celebrated its ESDU 15th / AUB’s

150th anniversary event under the theme “Arab women: Keepers of the

land”.

2002-Present Coordinator of the National Training Unit established at AUB under

the Near East Management Training in Agriculture (NEMTA) program

supported by IFAD, OPEC, the African Development Bank (ADB) and

Capacity Building International (InWEnt) Germany.

Established under FAFS/ESDU, NEMTA aims at up-scaling the design

and delivery of agricultural extension through the incorporation of new

training methods and tools focused on participation and demand-driven

response. The National Training Unit of Lebanon was one of the

cornerstones of the program, providing consulting and services

expertise to the 5 countries served by the program (Lebanon, Syria,

Jordan, Palestine and Yemen).

2001-Present Professor of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural

and Food Sciences, American University of Beirut. Beirut, Lebanon

Spring 2003 Senior Fellow, International Development Research Center (IDRC),

Ottawa – Canada and supported by the IDRC/UNCCD (United Nations

Drylands Development Center) on the preparation of a book on

research and development in Dryland MENA.

The book Research for Development in the Dry Arab Region: The

Cactus Flower (Hamadeh, S., Haidar, M., Zurayk, R. Southbound/IDRC

2006) is one of the very few comprehensive publications in trying to

understand the context of sustainable development in the Middle East

and North Africa region and proposes some innovative new directions,

which have begun to generate considerable interest within the

development research arena. The book relates the story of a relationship

between a poor rural community in arid Lebanon and a development

research project and their common journey to embrace sustainable

resource use. The book compiles 10 years of knowledge and experience

of a team of development researchers investigating sustainable rural

livelihoods in the community of Arsaal, Lebanon. It describes the

research experience and evaluates the innovative approaches that were

developed, the successes and failures of the project, and the many

lessons that were learned.

Spring 1999 Visiting Professor of Animal Science, Department of Animal and

Range Sciences, Montana State University. Montana, USA.

1996- 2001 Associate Professor of Animal Science, Faculty of Agricultural and

Food Sciences, American University of Beirut. Beirut, Lebanon.

1988-1996 Assistant Professor of Animal Science, Faculty of Agricultural and

Food Sciences, American University of Beirut. Beirut, Lebanon.

1984-1988 Graduate Research Assistant, New Mexico State University & United

States Department of Agriculture, Jornada Experimental Range. Las

Cruces. USA.

1980-1983 Technical editor for Poultry Middle East Magazine, Beirut,

Lebanon.
