Welcome to the Shades of the Prairies annual sale offering. Years ago producers seemed to be of the opinion that a great sale was the result of a great sale manager and a great sale staff. Well I’m here to tell you that the most important component is you the producers and your consignments, combined with promotion of your program. Add the prospective buyer in the stands that realize the unlimited potential of this great breed of cattle. Don’t misread, the sale management and sale staff are an important ingredient to pull it all together, and the more professional and credible they can be the better. I certainly want to congratulate the consignors that committed early when I was around selecting. 2015 is definitely the year that Shades consignors are a force to be reckoned with. What a tremendous set of Simmental Cattle they have consigned for 2015. This may be the year when the smoke all settles after the Shades of the Prairies Sale that there will be two groups of both buyers and sellers. The ones that wish they would have and the ones that are glad they did. Join us in Brandon for some hospitality and then take the time to evaluate what is maybe as good of set of Simmental Cattle this area has ever offered for sale. This beautiful Red Western daughter represents the strongest maternal pedigree we can possibly offer. 24B is moderate in frame, deep-bodied and clean-fronted while remaining exceptionally sound in her makeup. With a similar pedigree to Red Mountain (Red Western x Red Rock) 24B possesses a pedigree with an extremely impressive set of EPD’s. A pedigree that has proven to produce the type of cattle that are desirable in many aspects. Red Western has worked very well in our herd in respect to calving ease but also in regards to producing productive, excellent daughters. Last spring our high selling bull KWA Rock 36B, purchased by City View Simmentals, was raised by a Red Western daughter. The powerful, super-uddered Red Rock dam of 24B is an ET daughter of the 2009 Agribition heifer calf champion. 24B’s dam was also a 4H project of Owen’s, who this year raised one of our highlight bull calves for the coming sale and more recently produced 27 embryos in her first flush. Bred to the deceased CDI Authority bull that we were lucky enough to purchase the remaining Canadian semen on this last spring, and ultrasounded safe to a bull calf, 24B offers a unique opportunity to acquire highly outcross genetics to much of the breed and also the potential to add what could be your next great herd bull. A female with brood cow written all over her, 12B has as much shape, length of body and thickness as any female we have offered in the last number of years. Much like the other Red Mountain females 12B is wide-based and deep -ribbed with more than adequate width of top and hip. 12B is setting up a beautiful udder and ranks within the top 5% of the breed for milk EPD as well as the top 5% for calving ease and top 2% for maternal calving ease. The Bundi dam of 12B is sound made, with a good udder, middle of the road and has produced two top quality calves in her first two years. 12B combines the calving ease and maternal strength of Red Mountain with the performance of Bundi which should combine to create a highly productive genetic package. The service to Vision may work just right with this high performance female to create a stylish and eye appealing calf that could yield some rewarding results.

An absolute tank of a female that is powerful in every part of her makeup. 408B is the type of female that should go on to produce high performance cattle. After acquiring the KBR herd last fall it was decided to offer one of the bred heifers for sale marking the last opportunity to purchase a KBR female. It seemed fitting it be 408B as she was one of the most impressive individuals in the pen but also as her dam was purchased through the sale from Swan Lake Farms in 2010. The Hummer dam of 408B is soundly made and moderate-framed with an excellent udder. She has proven to also be highly productive, raising one of the top heifer calves in this year’s replacement pen. 408B’s sire KBR 132Y was Reserve Champion Simmental bull at Agribition in 2013. His sons were well received last spring at our annual bull sale and his daughters represent a large percentage of the blacks in our bred heifer pen this year. Again, bred to Vision the resulting calf should definitely be one to get excited about.

We are excited and thankful to be a part of the Shades group again. We had so much fun last year! This sale continues to be one of the best in Manitoba and it all boils down to the quality of people and calibre of cattle. I anticipate another great year, with a barn full of outstanding powerful Simmental genetics. In our effort to contribute something different, we have offered the first of our blue-hided progeny. We have been breeding towards a blue roan simmental and this heifer calf carries the feathering and, as she gets older, it continues to express throughout her hide. While hair color is a whimsy trait to chase, our main focus remains to be hands-free calving combined with performance and excellent maternal traits. Blue Angel is something a little different. When I still worked at Bonchuk Farms, I showed a bull called Black Sting 155S; I loved his daughters for their type and udder quality, but after a few years of service, we started to see an interesting color pattern get passed onto some of his offspring. I took that genetic knowledge and have been trying to propagate the roan colouring ever since. In addition to the cool color pattern, Blue Angel is an absolute sweetheart of a heifer. Her sire, Erixon Dealer, crossed very well with my Red Rock females and Blue Angel is a solid example of the mass, rib shape and style that comes from this genetic pairing. The maternal side of the pedigree is backed by flawless udders and tons of guts, the unusual hair coat is just an added bonus to a very competitive female.
