STYRKA SH-BDC Reticle and Ballistic Calculator

Thank you for purchasing a STYRKA rifl escope utilizing the SH-BDC reticle. The SH-BDC reticle is a Ballistic Drop Compensation type reticle designed for hunting applications from 100 yards to 600 yards and offers a hold-over solution for most centerfi re rifl e calibers. It is important to note that the reticle is designed for a broad range of calibers, bullets, and atmospheric conditions. It is the responsibility of the user/shooter to know where their particular rifl e and bullet combination is going to impact on target by testing the specifi c ammunition and rifl e out to varying distances prior to using it past the zero range in hunting conditions.

The reticle is based upon the assumption that users will zero the rifl e at 100 yards. A 200 yard zero may be used but it can have an effect on the performance of the BDC hold lines. Some calibers (light, fast bullets) may actually match up to the reticle better using a 200 yard zero. Again, this is the responsibility of the user/shooter to understand and evaluate on a case by case basis using the STYRKA SH-BDC Reticle Map and STYRKA Ballistic Calculator.

WARNING: Never look at the sun while using your rifl escope. Looking at the sun can cause permanent eye damage.

Reticle Focal Plane

All rifl escope reticles can be defi ned as being either fi rst focal plane (FFP) or second focal plane (SFP). This is determined by the internal location of the reticle in the rifl escope. STYRKA rifl escopes utilizing the SH-BDC reticle are all of second focal plane design and located behind the erecting lenses and nearer to the eyepiece. In order for the reticle to function properly the rifl escope must be set to the highest magnifi cation setting.

Side Focus / Parallax Adjustment

STYRKA SH-BDC rifl escopes without a side focus adjustment to correct parallax are factory set to be parallax free at 100 yards. For SH-BDC rifl escopes with a side focus adjustment knob, be sure to set the side focus knob so that the yardage referenced matches the distance to the target.

Note: If you are unsure of how to correct for parallax see “Side Focus / Parallax Adjustment” in the rifl escope manual.

Windage

The STYRKA SH-BDC reticle has windage lines so that windage can be compensated for at the same time as distance. The ends of each windage line represents the wind drift value calculated in the ballistic calculator for the gun and ammo combination selected based on a straight cross-wind to the shot. In addition, the fourth, fi fth and sixth windage lines include a hash at the midpoint on each side to designate a half wind hold.

Ballistic Calculator

The STYRKA ballistic calculator is designed to be an effective tool for all levels of users. The amount of data that can be entered into the calculator is scalable so that more and more data can be entered as the user becomes more profi cient and advanced. For someone new to longer distance hunting, a large portion of the data is pre-populated to make it simple and easy to obtain calculations that can then be verifi ed at the range. For more advanced users, pre-populated data can be overwritten and more precise data can be entered for more refi ned calculations (it is still recommended that data is verifi ed at the range before using in actual hunting situations).

The STYRKA ballistic calculator is available as an app for iOS and Android platforms and is also available as a web based program that can be accessed from the STYRKA website at www.styrkastrong.com.

Using the Ballistic Calculator

The STYRKA ballistic calculator can easily provide you with holdovers for the SH-BDC reticle. The instructions below will walk you through the process of getting holdovers from both the mobile and web based versions of the calculator.

Ammo Can – Mobile Version

In this screen (see page 8), you will create the ammunition for the gun created in the previous step. Once an ammunition is created, it can be saved and will be added to your “Ammo Can” for future use. If you are creating ammunition for the fi rst time, you will automatically be taken to the ammo creation screen. If an ammo has already been saved, you will have to press the “+” icon to create a new ammunition. To create a new factory ammunition, enter a name for your ammunition, select the manufacturer, caliber, bullet model and weight from the drop down lists. Once the weight is selected, the velocity, drag and ballistic coeffi cient will be automatically populated. The zero range default is 100 yards, but this can be changed if you sight in your rifl e at a different distance, for example, 200 yards. To create a handload, follow the same steps above but you will have to manually enter many of the fi elds. Press “Save” once all data has been entered. You will be asked if you want to add this combination of the gun and ammo created to your “Favorites”. Select “Save” if you want to add the gun and ammo combination to your favorites, or “Not Now” if you do not want to save it as a favorite or want to do so at a later time. Either selection will take you to the “Target Screen”.

Note: A pre-populated name for favorites is generated by combining the saved name of the gun and ammo created or selected. You are able to change the name of this combination before saving it to your favorites. We recommend creating a name that has meaning to you.
