New Year Celebration at Samalkha Group of Institutions

New Year…New Hopes…New Resolutions..

Welcome 2014…

Samalkha Group of Institutions whole heartedly welcomed New Year

2014 with new hopes of happiness, prosperity and success and new resolu-

tions of more progress, more inventions and more innovations. Some took

the resolution to help the needy while others were interested to teach the

illiterate. Noticing this, it was felt that in today‟s technical era where eve-

ryone is running after money; humanity, love, courtesy and kindness are

still alive in the heart of man.

Glad that this institution not only focuses on students for their studies and

co curricular activities but also on staff, students, management and its cele-

brations.

SGI welcomed the dawn of 2014 with prayers, celebrations and happiness.

New Year morning began with the zeal and zestful gathering of SGI staff,

Director and the Management. The event was compered by Ms. Pooja

Batra (Faculty, Management). She wished everyone for the new beginning

of life.

Dr. Rajesh Goel, Director SGI shared some sweet and sour experiences

and memorable moments with the audience and all saluted the great per-

sonalities who passed away in the previous year.

The event was followed by some thought sharing process by some senior

faculty. Director Sir explained the important goals in our life. He enunci-

ated his opinion regarding goals that everyone must set two goals; one

should be related to personal life and another professional life. (Prof) (Dr)

S. K. Verma(CS, SGI) also motivated the audience with his beautiful song.

Mr. Tarunjeet (Faulty, ECE Dept.) graced the event with his enthusiastic

poem in Punjabi. Ms. Pooja Batra (Faculty, Management) also spell

bounded the audience with her beautiful song relating to life. Mr. Vishal

Dora (TPO, SGI) brought up the facts of optimistic life. He described that

human thinking is related to real execution of things. Thus we all should

think only good things in our life so that we will have positive conse-

quences. Every one enjoyed the refreshment and all were full of joy.

The event ended with Director Sir‟s great thought regarding perception in somebody‟s life. Sometimes

perception becomes misperception. So we should try to see the only truth and should not be stuck with

our previous perception. Everyday must be perceived in a new way.

So, SGI would like to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year with the following few poetic lines:

Here comes the New Year

And it‟s time to make resolutions

For I promise to be sincere

And bring in me a revolution

To my friends I‟ll be kind

Have my character refined

To a helper of mankind

With a sound mind

I‟ll follow my senior‟s advice

Regularly I‟ll exercise

My mother I‟ll idolize

Beyond doubt I‟ll civilize

These are my resolutions

To bring in me an evolution

To follow them I‟ll try my best

Until then I‟ll not rest

SGI Students Developed Energy Efficient Automated Escalator

Students of Samalkha Group of Institutions‟ developed an Energy Efficient Automated Escalator on

4th January 2014. An escalator is a moving staircase – a conveyor transport device for carrying people

between floors of a building. The device consists of a motor-driven chain of individual, linked steps

that move up or down on tracks, allowing the step treads to remain horizontal. SGI students Md. Tanbir

(Mechanical, 1st year), Sanskar Ravi (CSE, 1st yr.), Abhijit (Mechanical, 1st year) developed this project

under the guidance of Er. Pawan Garg (Research Engineer, ERDC, SGI).

The project developed by the SGI students described the working of an automated escalator using a DC

motor base. It has a pair of infrared sensor at the entry which detects the presence of person and turn on

the escalator automatically. If there was no person on the escalator it will remain off.

Principal areas of usage include department stores, shopping malls, airports, transit systems, conven-

tion centers, hotels, arenas, stadiums and public buildings.

Escalators have the capacity to move large numbers of people, and they can be placed in the same

physical space as one might install a staircase. They have no waiting interval (except during very heavy

traffic), they can be used to guide people toward main exits or special exhibits, and they may be weath-

erproofed for outdoor use. A non-functioning escalator can function as a normal staircase, whereas

many other conveyances become useless when they break down.

Dr. Rajesh Goel congratulated the students and motivated them for developing and designing these

kinds of projects in coming future also.

SGI Students Developed Real Time Operated Electric Appliance Controller

Samalkha Group of Institutions‟ students developed a Real Time Operated Electric Appliance Control-

ler on 10th January 2014. The most important problems faced are the misusage of electricity and its

wastage. Sometimes due to carelessness of the persons, lamps or fans are left ON which results in wast-

age of electricity. This product was developed with the aim of overcoming all the problems faced due

to misusage of electricity and its wastage. SGI students Aditya Shankar (Mechanical, 1st year),

Shafeeur Rahman(Mechanical, 1st yr.), Rashid Akhtar(CSE, 1st year) developed this project under the

guidance of Er. Pawan Garg (Research Engineer, ERDC SGI).

Power Saving Using Time Operated Electrical Appliance Controlling System is a reliable circuit that

takes over the task of switch on/off the electrical devices with respect to time. This project replaces the

Manual Switching. It has an Inbuilt Clock which tracks over the Time. When this time equals to the

programmed time, then the corresponding device is switched ON.

The switching time can be edited at any Time using the keypad. The Clock is displayed on LCD dis-

play. Microcontroller is used to supervise the actions of all other devices and to control the entire set of

operations. Each device will have an on-time and off-time. So the circuit will switch on the device

daily at the on-time and switch it 0ff when the real time is same to the off time of the device. The appli-

ance is switched on when the user time and real clock time is equal.

SGI students have implanted this circuit on the Hooter in campus in order to automatically switch on

the hooter according to the Lecture timings. This circuit can be used for controlling any type of electric

appliance.

on 13th January 2014. Lohri is a popular festival celebrated all over India, particularly in North India.

At SGI, staff and students toss sesame seeds, gur, sugar-candy and rewaries on the bonfire, sit around

it, sing and dance till the fire dies out. It was followed by certain performances that include folk dance

and song etc. This is to show respect to the natural element of fire. It is traditional to offer til, gach-

chak, gur, moongphali (peanuts) and phuliya or popcorn. Milk and water was also poured around the

bonfire by students. This ritual was performed for thanking the Sun God and seeking his continued pro-

tection. Students performed a prayer and went around the fire. The exciting dance and songs gave a re-

minder of our culture and traditions. The whole event was conducted in a nice manner and all were
